Chapter 390: A building sense of unease
The next day Kellen was regretting his behaviour. Only slightly.
Rhys had been a lot more aggressive than he had been in the past. He had been holding back, as he should be since he was quite a bit stronger then Kellen, but he’d let the grip he had on himself slip a bit.
Kellen wasn’t complaining about that aspect at all. He had enjoyed every last slap against his ass, every last tease. He was pretty sure he’d been crying at a few points because the experience had been too good. With that being said, he was bitter about the fact that Rhys had been right.
Rhys had warned him that he was probably going to regret poking the beast, and Kellen did. Because his students had wanted to sit down and have personal conversations with him during the time that he normally had their class time. Kellen couldn’t exactly have these conversations walking around the building, so he had to agonize, trying to focus on their concerns while his ass pulsed. Bruised from Rhys’ attention, and his nature of spurring the man on.
He was pretty sure he came as hard as he had when he’d shoved his cock down Rhys’ throat.
Kellen, despite his rage, had had a good day yesterday, and now he was just dealing with the consequences of his actions.
~
Despite the small complaints, Kellen’s day, and week, went smoothly.
He was able to speak with Brent through the same setup that Captain Sergei used to speak to the other Captains while on the front lines. Brent did let it slip that the product he had been waiting for still hadn’t arrived, and he was getting a little concerned. Kellen was worried for him, but neither of them could do much from their current positions.
Kellen was just able to give him verbal support, while Brent also teased Kellen about the marks that were showing up on more visible parts of his body.
Rhys had really gotten into hickies. Kellen didn’t really mind, not after the claiming mark conversation, and especially as they had another conversation after Rhys had brought it up to his therapist. Rhys had been worried it was a sign he was shifting into being more controlling, like other Espers.
His therapist had brought up the idea that it might stem from his childhood and that had sent the wheels turning in a way that Rhys and Kellen hadn’t expected. That had been a hard conversation, and Kellen just sat and listened while Rhys tried to speak on it.
He had been rather casual about it all when he had been talking about Gunther, but when it came to actually dealing with it? It was a lot harder. Kellen understood, and was willing to be there for him the whole time.
Kellen was also making sure that Gunther was still checking in, and had even been at one of the Guiding Centers, Guiding Center B, when Gunther had swung by.
He was able to speak to him after he had been guided by someone, and was able to understand that things were far more complicated then they had thought. There was a lieutenant or someone of equal rank in town, and Gunther was getting closer and closer to him. But, Gunther was going to have to do some things he was going to regret.
Kellen told him it was okay for him to pull out if he wanted to.
Gunther had been surprised by Kellen’s words, and in a small way, that hurt Kellen. He knew Gunther could get in there, but he didn’t want Gunther to change himself, or hurt himself to get information. He wasn’t trained to infiltrate organisations, They had just given the group the member they were trying to steal.
Gunther could walk away whenever he wanted.
Seeing that Kellen was in full support of his choices only made Gunther more relaxed, and more passionate about getting to the lieutenant.
“They hurt your family, Kellen. And you’re Rhys’ family. I don’t want him to lose another one.” Gunther had said, breaking Kellen’s heart.
“You’re our family too.” Kellen told him fiercely and Gunther’s eyes had watered, before he brushed it off. Kellen made sure to give him an update on Casper, letting him know that Casper hadn’t gone out partying since, nor had he done anything rash. He seemed to just…be waiting for Gunther.
Kellen didn’t know if Gunther was comforted by that information or not, but he left shortly after.
Kellen waited quite a while before he left, making sure it looked like they hadn’t interacted at all.
~
Kellen’s second group was doing quite well on the front lines as well. Bree was in this group, and she was apparently taking the front lines by storm. Everyone was calling her the third Kellen, and Kellen wasn’t exactly sure if he liked being told that.
It wasn’t unexpected, given how Bree had been doing in her classes so far. She was good, she was going to be good, she was just scared of dying. A rather normal response, actually.
Brent was keeping an eye on the Espers they were interacting with, especially after the incident. Kellen was glad that he was and that Brent told him that he was. Kellen had faith in Brent though. The man might be open to receiving others with open arms and legs, but he didn’t mess around when it came to disrespect.
Kellen let Brent know that the second class was at roughly the same point that they had sent the first class out at, and they were going to move forward with the plan. He wouldn’t be coming back for a break, and instead would remain on the front lines. Brent had pouted, saying he was going to start forgetting Kellen’s face, wiping a fake tear from his eye until Kellen saw Captain Sergei in the background.
Captain Sergei had approached, checking on the Field Guide.
“Are you alright, Guide Jameson? Do you need assistance?” Kellen had watched as Brent had blushed, faced with the pale face of Captain Sergei, and the eyes that stared through him. Brent swallowed.

“Oh, I’m perfect. Kellen and I were just joking.” He told the other man and Captain Sergei glanced at the screen, scanned Kellen, before his eyes widened and he leaned in. He was closer to Brent as he scanned the screen further before a smile touched his lips and he leaned back.
“I see. Captain Thatcher has been taking good care of you, Guide Kellen.” Captain Sergei said with a smile. “Good to see. I don’t see you in the meeting calls anymore. It’s quite boring without you there to yell at all the idiots.” Captain Sergei told him, and Kellen was sure that he was right.
“I’m sorry I’m not around to amuse you anymore, Captain Sergei, but my students and other Guides need my help now.” Kellen told him warmly. Captain Sergei’s lips twitched, before he nodded, squeezed Brent’s shoulder and turned, waving.
“Sounds about right. Exactly what I would expect from you. Well, I’ll leave you two alone longer. See you soon, Guide Jameson.” Kellen was giving Brent a look when the tent flap closed behind him and Brent just shook his head.
“He’s just a nice guy.” Brent told him. Kellen didn’t believe him in the slightest. The main reason being that while there were differences between Captain Sergei and Gwen in personality, both were good people. Gwen was just a happy, bright person while Captain Sergei was more dry. He was still a good person. Still the kind of type that Brent avoided.
He was also an S Class, so if Brent didn’t want to get in too deep with him, he needed to draw that line soon. Not that he wouldn’t respect a boundary, but he just wanted Brent to be safe. When Kellen brought up that point, Brent had flushed and protested.
He even shouted that he had Captain Sergei hadn’t even held hands to guide yet. They were just speaking more because Hill was busy with her Espers. Kellen had smirked at that, and teased him that he had gone from the basic form of guiding and had instead gone off the deep end. Brent hadn’t taken the teasing well, and ended the call prematurely.
Kellen still chuckled thinking about that.
He made sure to tell Rhys about the situation, and Rhys, a shit disturber just like Brent, asked Captain Sergei about him and if ‘Guide Jameson’ was doing well. Rhys told Kellen that the look on his face had been priceless, and Kellen was a little disappointed that he hadn’t been there to see it. Rhys also hadn’t gotten anyone to take a photo, since that was a breach of trust, but Kellen appreciated that Rhys had bothered Brent and Captain Sergei about it.
Kellen had received a rather stern email later in the evening, but Kellen took it in stride.
Things were going well. His relationship with Rhys felt solid, everyone around them was doing alright. His students were progressing and everyone only had praise to say about them. It felt like the reason he had been hired hadn’t been in vain, and it was pretty satisfying to know that even if the position had been made for him, he was still excelling in it.
His parents were coming back, with good news. The antidote had worked on a rather large area, and they could come home while the Guild monitored how the area healed. Everything was exciting, and new, and it felt like things were going well.
So why did Kellen suddenly have a deep, worrying sense of unease?
