Chapter 392: A car is a car
When they got down to the garage, Rhys took the lead. Holding Kellen’s hand still, he had a nice, slightly goofy smile on his face as he led Kellen past the two door car that he had got him and down the slope of the garage to some more cars that he owned.

Kellen was serious when he said that his Dad shouldn’t be allowed down here, but then again, if something had happened…maybe he should allow him to come down here. It might cheer him up.

Kellen was still mulling over it when Rhys came to a stop, tugging on Kellen’s hand so that he didn’t run into him. Kellen took a moment to realise what car they had stopped in front of.

It was a four door, so Kellen assumed it sat at least four people. It looked like a normal black car from the back. He wasn’t so sure what was so special about it, even as Rhys gave him a look like he was expecting some kind of praise.

“Well? What do you think?” He asked, excited, and Kellen just stared at the car. He wasn’t like his Dad. He didn’t really care about all the cool gadgets and gizmos that came with cars. He just wanted to make sure the car worked, got from one place to the next, etc.

“I think it’s nice? It’s black?” Kellen said, trying to be supportive, and Rhys sighed, shaking his head. He tugged Kellen up behind him as he went towards the driver’s side of the car. They had to squeeze in between this car, and another that looked just like it, but in a custom yellow colour. A colour that matched Rhys’ eyes.

“I should have known better.” Rhys muttered, and Kellen felt a slight twinge in his chest. Was Rhys upset? He didn’t want to make him upset.

“I’m sorry. I just-” Rhys spun quickly, pressing a finger into Kellen’s lips, silencing him.

“You don’t need to apologise. That’s not what I’m saying. I just know you won’t be impressed until I tell you about the car. I know you don’t really know anything about cars, or at least not until you’ve been told about them. I know your Dad is into cars, I had just thought some of it had been absorbed through osmosis, but not as much as I thought stuck around.” Rhys didn’t look angry at all, and Kellen let out a sigh of relief.

“Oh thank goodness. I was worried you were upset with me.” Rhys stared at Kellen, his open expression, and leaned in, kissing his lips quickly.

“You’re so damn handsome.” Rhys murmured, causing Kellen to blush. He had no idea what brought on his declaration, but Kellen felt that he wasn’t allowed to be the only one declaring things.

“You’re even more handsome.” Kellen countered, his face flaming, and Rhys laughed.

“What a handsome pair we make, hmm? Now come here, sugar. You can open this car the same way you open your own, with your fingerprint.” Kellen nodded, letting Rhys guide him through the process, his hand holding Kellen’s wrist as they pressed his thumb into the little finger divot.

When the car acknowledged that Kellen was one of the owners, the car made a soft beeping noise and the door unlocked. Rhys grinned as he opened the door for Kellen and Kellen was able to see the interior was all leather, with all the gizmos he’d expect of someone like Rhys. Rhys pressed another kiss against Kellen’s cheek, motioning for him to enter and Rhys would close the door behind him.

Kellen did so, getting his bearings around himself, adjusting things as Rhys came in from the passenger side after closing the door behind him. While Kellen adjusted mirrors and the like, Rhys took the moment to hook up Kellen’s phone so that he was able to call his Mom while they were driving. Kellen was appreciative of the action, and once everything was set up, the car was running, and everything felt right, Kellen leaned towards Rhys.

“Rhys? Lean over for me please.” Rhys seemed to have no idea what Kellen wanted, but did as he was asked. Kellen pressed his lips against the other man’s, running his tongue along the other man’s lips until he allowed him in. Kellen kissed him deeply, but on a budget. They were on their way to pick up his parents, so they couldn’t sully the car before then.

Kellen pulled back, wiping his bottom lip as Rhys sat there, his face flushed, surprise on his face.

“Thank you for your help.” Kellen told him and Rhys cleared his throat, a bright smile touching his face.

“O-Oh. You’re welcome.” Rhys coughed, as Kellen gave him a boyish grin, put the car in reverse, and headed on their way out.

It was as Kellen was driving towards the airport that Rhys began to tell him about the car. It was an old world build, something that had lasted from the before times.

Before the gates had begun to take over the world.

Its bases had been changed out for more sturdy material now that metals from the gates were proven to be better than earth metal, but the base intention of the car remained the same. It was a tank. A tank that was made to look like a normal car. Kellen didn’t know because he hadn’t opened nor closed the door so he didn’t know that the car weighed over 4 tonnes. Each door had a base minimum weight, and you had to be at least a C Class to own one since you wouldn’t be able to open the doors of the car.

Kellen was surprised to hear that, and when Kellen looked over at Rhys, he had a lazy smile on his face.

“A base Class to own a car?” Kellen had asked and Rhys grinned.

“If you ever got tired, I was planning to offer my services to open the door for you. All gentleman behaviour.” Rhys told him, a sparkle in his yellow eyes.

“What if I wanted to leave?” Kellen asked and Rhys chuckled.

“I’d open the door for you then too. It would mean that we would take this car to places together.” Kellen couldn’t help but find that his lips were twitching. He was such a damn schemer. Kellen was going to have to find something of equal value, maybe not monetarily, but certainly emotionally.

Kellen could feel the underlying weight of the possessiveness in this act, but now that he was an A Class, he couldn’t say that Kellen would never be able to open the doors. Did he have a worry that Rhys might go and get more weight put into the doors of the car? If Rhys was less well taken care of, maybe. But not anymore.

They remained mostly quiet as they continued their drive after that, Rhys offering a few words of banter here and there while Kellen focused on the road. There weren’t that many people out and about, but he was worried about if they were being tailed or something as sinister as that. Rhys didn’t say anything, just keeping his hand on Kellen’s thigh in comfort. He would have held Kellen’s hand if he didn’t need it to switch gears.

Kellen called his Mom as they were getting closer.

“Hello?” His Mom’s voice filled the car and Kellen smiled.

“You’re on speaker with Rhys and I, so don’t say anything weird.” Kellen told her. “We’re getting close now. Almost at the pick up zone.” Kellen told her, following the signs for the small airport.

“Perfect. We’ll come out now. What are you guys driving?” Kellen glanced at Rhys.

“Kellen is driving an S Class sedan from Mercedes Benz. Your husband should know more once he sees it.” Rhys spoke up for Kellen and they both heard her groan over the other line.

“A luxury car? Why would you bring that here? Kellen doesn’t even realise how nice those kinds of things are.” She protested. Kellen would have felt offended if that wasn’t the truth. They were kind of wasted on him, but it was clear that Rhys didn’t think so.

“He’ll learn.” He defended and Kellen’s Mom chuckled.

“Oh will he? He hasn’t learned all this time. What’s going to change now?” His Mom asked, and it was a very fair question. Rhys smirked.

“Well, maybe you two didn’t have the right motivation, hmm?” The look that Rhys gave Kellen as he slid into a parking spot out front of the airport made Kellen want to blush. Rhys’ hand squeezed Kellen’s thigh, and Kellen cleared his throat.

“Uh, well, I guess?” Kellen offered lamely, a little flustered at the way that Rhys was looking at him. He knew damn well what was going through the other man’s head, and Rhys wasn’t the kind of man to hide his intentions either. Rhys’ grin reached his eyes, and Kellen’s Mom burst into laughter.

“Oh. I see what kind of motivation you were thinking of. Not while I’m around. I’ve only barely approved of you, S Class.” Kellen’s Mom hung up on that, and Kellen shook his head, smiling slightly. His Mom was just putting on a show, trying to tease Rhys. Kellen reached over, giving Rhys’ thigh a squeeze like he had been doing to Kellen this whole time.

“It’s nice to hear you two banter sometimes.” Kellen told her. He didn’t want to add it was nice that he was going to continue to hear their banter for the foreseeable future, but he was sure that got through to him. Rhys was pretty good at picking up on Kellen’s hidden intentions.

“Yeah. Banter.” It was his response that made Kellen realise that Rhys wasn’t quite okay. Kellen squeezed his thigh, forcing the other man to look at him.

“She was joking. I hope you know that. Just a joke. She wouldn’t have said so with me in the car if that was the case. She would have taken you aside, like I am sure that she did already.” Rhys didn’t deny it, which didn’t surprise Kellen. It should have, but both of his parents had made their concerns clear to Kellen when this relationship was first starting, so it only made sense that one, if not both, had spoken to him already.

“Yeah.” Rhys’ one word response had Kellen frowning, reaching over and grabbing his chin. He jerked Rhys towards him, leaning in and pressing his lips against his own in a forceful kiss. Rhys had a shocked look on his face as Kellen pulled away, a little upset.

“I mean it. Things would be a lot different if she didn’t like you, but I’ll make sure to let her know that you don’t like that kind of joke. I would hate for it to cause problems between you two.” Kellen told him. “Now, maybe you should stand outside of the car? Make sure that they know where to go?” Kellen suggested and Rhys nodded, his smile touching his eyes again when Kellen pulled away from him.

“Alright sugar. I…trust you. I just…” Kellen nodded, understanding. Kellen’s parents were important to him, and Rhys didn’t have a good relationship with his own. He wanted to make sure that of all people, Kellen’s family liked him.

“It’s okay baby. I know. Now, go be a good greeter.” Kellen gave him a lopsided smile, and Rhys warmed.

“I demand kisses in payment.” Rhys said as he opened his door. Kellen let out a huff.

“What a high payment. When we get home, alright?” Kellen told him, teasing, and Rhys cast a glance over his shoulder before he got out.

“With the lights off?” Rhys bargained and Kellen’s heart warmed.

“The lights better be off. It’ll be 3 or 4 am when we get back.” Rhys flashed a bright grin before he gave a salute and got out of the car proper. Kellen rested his hands against the steering wheel and smiled. He was such a cute man. He was glad that he knew that.
