(BL) Hunting The Field Guide - Chapter 96
Chapter 96: Crazy, not insane Chapter 96: Crazy, not insane Casper was the first to offer up a few suggestions as Kellen and Brent tried not to get overwhelmed at the amount of Guides who wanted to become like them.
The first thing he suggested was for Kellen and Brent to only take the first twenty Guides who had applied for the program.
Kellen, who had been thinking the same thing, relaxed as soon as someone with more experience confirmed his thoughts.
Casper then offered that they should host their first class, their first lesson somewhere fun.
Kellen, who had been thinking of using the obstacle room as their first location, was pleased that Casper was thinking along the same lines as him. After that, Casper told them that they had done a fantastic job, gave them both a pat on the back, and headed back to the Guiding Division.
Kellen, who knew he needed to speak to Casper, but couldn’t remember why he needed to speak to Casper, went to stop him for a few seconds.
Casper noticed Kellen’s hesitation and paused. “Was there anything you needed, Kellen?” He asked, and Kellen grew confused.
He hummed for a second, before shrugging. “I know there was something I was supposed to talk to you about, but it’s escaping my mind.
Maybe I’ll remember later.” Kellen told him.
Casper’s expression relaxed, and he nodded. “Of course.
Just message me if you remember.
I’m probably going to take lunch a little later, so you two go ahead without me.” The two Field Guides nodded, and Casper gave them a smile and a small wave before leaving for good. Brent, once everyone was out of the room, collapsed on one of the chairs, tilting his head back and sighing heavily. “Fuck.
There were so many people.” He complained, and Kellen chuckled. “You’re right.
That was more than I thought would show up.” Kellen told him, closing down the laptop and putting it back into the laptop bag.
He placed the bag on the table, zipping it up before also sitting down and sighing.
Brent chuckled. “Overwhelmed, huh?
It’s going to be a lot, Kellen.
You wouldn’t have been able to handle it on your own.” Kellen was also coming to terms with that too.
He had thought that at most, 10 people were going to be interested in becoming a Field Guide.
The school that he had gone to as a teen had only about 4 students at a time.
The reason it was still running was because it was mandated by the government.
It wasn’t in a pretty place in town either, but it only took serious students.
The classes always started with more kids, and then were carved down until only the most serious Guide’s remained.
Obviously, Kellen was one of those serious kids, and he had a good connection with his teachers.
Which only made Kellen more confused that so many other people wanted to join his program, specifically.
There were better teachers, better classes, and better programs out there.
What was different about Kellen?
Brent snorted, lacing his hands together behind his head as he leaned back in his chair.
“Thank the gods you decided to hire me, huh?
Who else would be able to help you?
Follow new episodes on the "N0vel1st.c0m".
Not any other type of Guide, that’s for sure.” Kellen chuckled, glancing over at Brent. “Are you rubbing in the fact that the other Field Guide I was going to select is currently M.I.A.
in a gate?” Kellen asked, a slight teasing tone to his voice.
Brent snorted. “Not at all.
It didn’t even cross my mind.
Since I would never be so foolish as to go into a gate without all of the preparation done.
I would have asked for the hazard suits after realizing what the surroundings of the gate had turned into.” Kellen wanted to laugh at Brent’s response, but knew that was callous.
A whole team was missing, and he hadn’t heard any good news about them yet.
They probably weren’t going to send in another team after them since that would mean the loss of two groups potentially. “Not everyone is like you, Brent.
And maybe they did, but were denied?
We don’t know.
What I do know from the footage I saw of them entering the gate is that they were underdressed, but calm.
They might have thought they were going into a normal gate check.
Remember, the governments kind of hid that a new gate type had formed, so why would they think that it could be a problem?” Brent sighed. “Sure.
I understand that we’re the outliers here Kellen, but neither one of us would have walked into a gate check like that.
I bet that if we talk to others, we’ll find out that they didn’t even ask that many questions.” Kellen shook his head, staring at Brent.
He had a slightly playful expression, but his serious green gaze gave him away.
He was also worried about the scouting party, but Brent blew off steam and concern by making fun.
It was something Kellen hadn’t always understood, but he never complained.
Sometimes, you need a little bit of humour to get out of a serious situation. “That may be true, but keep in mind.
We’re both insane, and picky.
It’s how we got along when we first started working together.
Now, let’s go.
I’m sure you’re starving.” He teased, getting to his feet.
Brent sighed, but got up.
Kellen went to grab the laptop bag, but Brent snatched it off of the table, throwing the strap over his shoulder. “Ha ha.
Yeah, we are both picky, but I wouldn’t say we’re insane.
Insanely hot, I’ll take, but not generally insane.
Crazy?
Probably, but insanity carries such a heavy burden Kellen.
But everyone is crazy who goes to the front lines, but not everyone is insane.
I’d say the Espers that go there for fun are insane, but everyone else is just baseline crazy.
” Brent opened the door for Kellen with a smile.
Kellen shook his head as the two of them stepped out into the hallway. Glancing down the hallway, he noticed that Pamela had set up her little table outside of conference room 1 again, and she was typing away on her tablet.
She looked up when she heard the door close behind the two, and smiled when she caught sight of Kellen. “Ah, how did the meeting go, you two?
Did everything go smoothly?” She asked and Kellen nodded, smiling as well. “More Guides showed up then we expected, but everything went smoothly.
How is the gate situation going?
Have we heard anything about the scouting party?” Pamela’s face fell and she shook her head. “No.
Not a word.
The gate has also been behaving ‘normally’.
No fluctuations, no spikes, nothing.
Everyone has been paying closer attention since you brought up the reality of the gate.
The Captain’s have been very concerned, and have been keeping an eye on the gate.
Captain Sergei has volunteered to go to the front lines to check on the people at the front lines, while the rest stay back.” Kellen nodded.
That sounded like something Captain Sergei would do.
Kellen also believed that the Captain would have wanted to go, but….
“Did the Captain not volunteer himself because of me?” Kellen asked, and Pamela cleared her throat. “I can neither confirm nor deny what you’ve suggested.
I would ask him if I were you.” Pamela’s voice was all PR, but her eyes were dancing.
The pink shade brought out the pink in her cheeks, and made her seem more mischievous.
Kellen chuckled. “Your reaction has told me everything I need to know.
I should complain, but it brings me a small sense of peace knowing that most of our important people aren’t near that gate yet.
Not until Captain Sakura gets her friend to help us out.” Pamela’s expression didn’t change, but the air shifted slightly. “Yes, I agree with you.
Especially since Gunther is away until Monday, it gives me a little bit of comfort that he didn’t volunteer himself, so thank you Guide Woods.
And you as well, Guide Jameson.” Brent waved one of his gloved hands. “No need to thank me, I’m just along for the ride.” Brent said, smiling.
Kellen glanced into the conference room just to see how everyone was doing.
Only about half of the room was occupied, and Kellen couldn’t spot Hill or the Captain.
Pamela noticed Kellen’s gaze moving to the room and chuckled. “They’re all in a lunch meeting.
They should be back in about two hours, since they normally have a spat of some kind when around each other and food.
I wouldn’t worry though.
He promised that he wouldn’t get into a fight because he didn’t want to get a strip ripped off of him by you.” Her grin as she told them that made Kellen flush.
“Asking him to be responsible isn’t ridiculous.” Kellen defended, and both Pamela and Brent laughed. “No, it isn’t.
Especially since it costs you so much to put him back together.
On that topic, we need to head out for our own lunch.
Did you want to come with us?” Brent asked, and Pamela shook her head. “No.
I’ll have something delivered.
Unfortunately, I have a lot of contracts to review and write.
Have a good lunch you two.” She waved as the two of them headed for the elevators.
Brent was whistling as the two of them headed down to the cafeteria, a smile on his face. “I wonder what they have for lunch today?” He asked, and Kellen shook his head with a smile.
He was glad that Brent recovered so quickly from the stress of the meeting, but he should have known.
Food was the way to Brent’s heart.
