Chapter 143: Frustration
Jason
I was going crazy, and at this point, there was no stopping it.
I let out a loud frustrated groan, my chest feeling tight as I stared down at the message I just opened on my phone. It was from one of my men and they’ve just informed me that they’re still yet to find Rory.
It’s been about six hours since he suddenly disappeared, and since it happened, I’ve been unable to breathe. I’ve been unable to do a sane thing. Haven’t been able to sit or think of anything aside from the thought of finding Rory and getting him back. I began to pace around while dragging my hand over my face, letting out a ragged sigh. I stiffened as my phone began to ring and on whipping out, I quickly accepted the call on seeing that it was Kenny.
“Any news?” He asked and it sounded like he was winded. It pained me to give him a negative response but I sighed the words out.
“Still nothing.” I muttered and Kenny let out a tired grunt. It was dark outside and night was already upon us, but that wasn’t gonna be stopping me. I was already preparing to leave to go search for Rory again because no way would I rest without finding him.
“The police are gonna be pretty useless till after forty eight hours.” He explained and I snarled, feeling beyond irritated.
“Fuck the stupid police, they’re always useless. Come home, we need to figure out what to do with the kids, because it’s clear where Rory is at since he doesn’t seem to be somewhere else.” I continued and I could feel Kenny frown through the phone.
“Where?”
“Alex’s.” I responded through the phone and there was a moment of silence at first.
“Oh.” He finally breathed out and I tugged on my hair as I resumed pacing around.
“Just come home, we’ll come up with a plan.”
After that, the call ended and I shoved my phone back into my pocket. I was still pacing around the bedroom when a knock echoed from the door and I stiffened for a few moments. I walked towards the door and gently unlocked it, my eyes falling on Niko and Anna standing right behind the door.
Guilt instantly slammed through me because all of this felt like it was my fault. It was my job to protect Rory and ensure his safety. He got stolen right from underneath my nose and that realization was making me sick to my stomach each time. The CCTV revealed that he was drugged with fumes and put into a car all in a minute and I was very worried for him and also hoping that he would remain unharmed and safe till I found him.
“Jason…” Niko began as I crouched before them. “Where’s dad?” He asked, eyes locked with mine snd I hesitated, unsure of how to respond. After we realized Rory was gone, the first thing I checked was to confirm if the kids were safe. We didn’t return straight home, I ordered for them to be brought here, to this house which I rented about a month ago. Since I got here, I’ve been too busy with calls to interact with them, and that made me feel a little guilty.
“He’ll be back soon, he went to take care of something.” I responded as easily as I could. I made sure no trace of emotions was across my face because Niko was an enigma and can read emotions and scents very well. He proved that once again by his next words.
“But you smell worried. Is something wrong?”
I tried to chuckle and ended up failing at it, and at the end of the day, I settled on huffing while reaching out to ruffle his hair.
“I’m trying to take care of a problem that came up at work. But nothing’s wrong, okay?” I continued before rising to my feet.
“Are you gonna prepare dinner for us? I’d have done it but Rory insists that I wasn’t old enough to cook yet.” Anna said this time and it was at the tip of my tongue to reveal the truth to them, to tell them that Rory was missing and that there was nothing worth smiling or being happy over, but I ended up deciding against it.
“I’ll order dinner for you guys.” I suggested and they both hooted before starting to argue about something. I tuned them out and looked through my phone for updates from my men, hoping one of them would send a positive response that they’ve found Rory. But even I knew that was just too good to be true.
Anna and Niko tried engaging me in some things, but after they realized that I wasn’t paying attention to them, they ended up abandoning me to myself. I knew they’d be more understanding should they know the truth but I didn’t want to bother them unnecessarily or make them worry. This is my mistake and one which I must fix as fast as possible.
As the thought of Alex materialized in my head, an immense feeling of anger consumed me, making it hard for me to breathe or see straight for the first few seconds. My hand was in a tight fist at my side and it took about a minute before the lump in my chest started to ease away a little.
I let out a wry sigh as the door finally opened to reveal Kenny. At this point, the kids were fast asleep in the master bedroom after eating and showering. Kenny looked very stressed as he approached me and I wrapped my arms around him, clutching tightly and trying to draw some strength from him.
“I have to leave tonight. To Alex’s pack. I must get Rory back no matter what.” I said, my voice fierce and determined just as Kenny and I broke out of the hug.
Kenny didn’t object or try to change my mind. He just nodded firmly.
“I’m coming with you.”
