Chapter 156: Retained Memories
Rory
Child of the sea?
“What?” I blurted out, unable to believe my ears. The woman offered me a smile and reached out to take my hand. I flinched at the contact because her hand felt cold and slimey.
“You’re from the sea and which is why you’re back here, to where you belong.” She explained and my eyes widened as I felt my heart drop into my stomach.
“Oh,” I whispered, a wave of disappointment slowly engulfing me.
“Yes. Now you can spend the rest of enternity here being happy forever, along with your brothers and sisters.” She continued and I blinked at her in confusion.
“Huh? Enternity?” I blurted out and she hummed while nodding. “We all live forever here. There’s nothing like death here,”
“Oh.” I whispered, feeling lost and unsure of what to make of her explanation.
“So I’ll just have to live on this floating board with you forever?” I echoed out and this time, she laughed while shaking her head.
“No, silly! There are a whole others like yourself, and we don’t live above water, we live under water.” She explained and a gawked at her, at a complete loss of what to make of all this.
“Don’t worry, I’ll show you.” She informed me then she was sliding right into the water before I could blink. I gasped in shock, hurrying to the edge of the board to stare into the rippleless water where her face emerged from in the very next moment, making me stumble a little.
“Cmon in!” She called out, gesturing nto the sea and I stared at her like she had gone crazy.
“What? In the water? I can’t even swim! IM gonna drown and die in there.” I muttered and she laughed again, a rich sound before she shook her head.
“I told you death doesn’t exist here, remember? And as a child of the sea, you can breathe underneath water like everyone else that’s like you.” She explained and once again, I gawked at her, unable to believe my ears.
I had to remind myself that this was no longer earth so in a way, it should make sense that this was currently possible as I tentatively slid into the sea and let myself get pulled under. My eyes were squeezed shut and I remained still till my lungs burned, then I took a small inhale. I didn’t get choked by the water and that prompted me into slowly blinking my eyes open and I gasped as my eyes got flooded with a wave of lights. I had thought it was gonna be dark underneath here but it was the complete opposite. Everywhere was so shiny, beautiful and so colorful. The flowers looked unreal and so did the fishes that just swam past me right now.
When I turned back to the woman, she was grinning at me, her hair flowing behind her and I hurriedly glanced away at the sight of her nakedness which her hair didn’t conceal any longer.
“It’s fine. This is pretty normal down here.” She offered but I still felt extremely uncomfortable.
“I’m Ella. C’mon let me introduce you to the others.” She offered and was about to start swimming forward when I grabbed her wrist.
“Am I… really dead? Like, I can’t go back to my old life ever again?” I asked quietly and she frowned, face tilted sideways.
“Wait, you can still remember your past life?”” She questioned slowly and I nodded once.
“Of course. Can’t you?”
She shrugged.
“I’ve never left home and I don’t wish to. But the people who’ve returned back here never remember anything, so this is really surprising…” she trailed off and I frowned, instantly starting to go over my memories to be certain I still remembered my old life.
I have a son, Niko.
I have to mates, Kenny and Jason.
I have Anna, who i see as a child of mine.
I have a loving family. I lived a happy life with these people. I had a bunch of businesses that I run. I am very easy going and I also have a really soft heart. I’ve been through hell countless times. I’ve been betrayed more than once before.
Clearly, I remember everything about my past life. The memories were so vivid that I could feel my chest start to hurt now.
Ella shrugged again when I nodded my head at her, an indication that I still remember my past memories.

“Is there anything that can be done to help me?” I asked quietly and she blinked slowly.
“Help with what?”
“Help with me having to return back to earth.” I explained and she frowned again.
“You’d really want to return back to that place?? That place filled with suffering and sadness?” She gasped out, regarding me like I had grown two heads. I nodded slowly while still holding her wrist.
“But everyone who returns here never wishes to go back. I’ve heard so much about the earth. It’s a large place filled with wicked people and a lot of pain.” She explained and I grimaced a little.
“You’re right. It’s really as bad as you’ve heard. In fact. It’s so much worst. Over there, people are ready to kill you solely because of their own selfish gain.” I muttered just as Alex materialized in my heart at once.
“But then in the midst of those bad people, there are a lot of good people there. In the midst of the pain on earth, some people still manage to find peace and happiness through various means. I happen to be a part of those lucky people. I got to experience love, happiness, joy, peace, satisfaction and contentment. It wasn’t easy, I went through a lot of pain. People I trusted betrayed me, but despite that, I still managed to experience a lot of good emotions on earth. I met amazing people, formed amazing bonds, birthed an amazing child… and I won’t trade that life for anything. It’s the exact life I want to return to.”
Once I was done speaking, Ella’s eyes were wide open as she regarded me.
“Wow.” She whispered and I glanced away, suddenly feeling embarrassed.
“So, is there really something that can be done?” I asked after a few moments had passed. Ella appeared to be deep in thoughts before finally nodding.
“I- I think so. But this sounds very serious so we have to visit the Queen mother.” She explained and I felt my eyes widened in confusion.
“Who’s that?”
“That’s the creator of all of us! The queen of the sea!”
~~~
I found it fascinating that there were no mermaids here. It was underneath the sea, but it didn’t feel like water was touching us. It felt more like air, but in the motion which people’s hair moved, it was obvious that only water could do such.
At this point, Ella had succeeded in introducing me to a hundred people that looked just like her, both genders. My skin was still its normal color and when she noticed me staring at it, she explained to me that after spending three days here, my skin would change to theirs. But I didn’t want that to happen, I didn’t want to spend the rest of my life here. I want to return back to earth and be with the people I love.
But Jason…
My throat felt choked up, eyes feeling wet. Alex crossed my mind again and this time, an immense amount of anger consumed my body.
My Jason… dead…
Alex… he’s gonna pay for this no matter what…
I turned towards Ella the next moment, grabbing her wrist again. “When can we see this queen mother?” I asked and she counted on her fingers at first.
“In a few days.”
My eyes widened. In 3 days, my skin will change to blue! I didn’t want that to happen!
“Can we see her today? Like right now?” I asked and Ella laughed.
“What? No. The Queen mother lives far away. It would take at least five days for us to journey there. And we can’t do it on our own, we’ll have to get the help of a few people who’re thankfully my friends.” She explained and I began to curse over and over again within myself.
“What if my skin changes to blue? Will I still be able to go back to earth?” I asked and she appeared unsure.
“I don’t even know if that is possible, you being able to return back to earth, that is. We are just gonna have to try our luck and hope that it works out.” She explained and I deflated a little, but determination quickly consumed me again.
“Alright then, I still want to try. We leave when?”
“Tomorrow morning. First, I have to get an excuse from my job of welcoming people like you who lose their lives and gets sent here, to where they are initially from.” She explained and I sighed before reluctantly nodding.
“Alright then.”
