Chapter 179: Access Denied
Rory
“What?” She whispered, eyes and mouth open in clear shock. I let out a sigh as I gently helped her to her feet before holding her at arm’s length.
“You’ve hurt me countless times, over a man, over and over again. If I want to be friends with someone, I believe the person should trust me to some extent at least, and it’s been years between us, but you still don’t trust me, at least when it involves a man on your part. The same thing that happened in the past with Trevor, which I forgave you for, is still the same thing that happened with you and your new husband, at least something very similar. One would think you’d come to trust me more after the incident with Trevor, but I guess that just isn’t the case. And that’s why we can no longer be friends.”
Her bottom lip wobbled as I spoke and I tried to ignore that as I continued. “Once again, I really do appreciate the fact that you willingly took me into your home even though I could have torn out to be a bad person . You trusted me blindly and I’ll never forget the help you rendered to me. Which is why I’ll be helping you. And you can come to me whenever you need help and I’ll help however I can. However, that’s gonna be the end of it. It can’t be more than that.”
When I let go of her shoulders, she rushed to clutch my shirt. “Rory, please don’t do this.” She whispered quietly, her cheeks wet with tears.
“I know I’m stupid and gullible but please, I beg of you, forgive me. It won’t happen again, I promise.” She whispered desperately but I surged as I averted my face. My mind travelled back to the day of the wedding, the way she had loudly screamed at me like I was a stranger, she hadn’t even bothered to ask the reason for the ruckus, she had just gone ahead to accuse me of trying to ruin her wedding. That had felt really awful.
When I glanced back at her, my lips were in a thin line as she shook my head firmly before gently pulling her hands away from my shirt, and then I took a step back.
“Go home, Raya.” I muttered and she sobbed again.
“I’ll send you more than enough money tonight. Use it to take care of yourself and your child, and stop trusting people too much on moving forward.” I continued and her hands shook as she straightened her gown and tried to stop her hiccups.
“We don’t have a house anymore, that bastard took everything from me.” She whispered, pain and regret obvious in her voice.
I patted my pockets for my phone and fished it out.
“I’ll book you a room in one of Jason’s hotels. You and Matilda can spend a few days there till you figure out your next step.” I told her as I tapped away, sending a text to Jason and asking him to take care of this for me. In no time, he sent me a code which I rattled off to Raya.
“Just say the code to the manager at the hotel and you’d be taken care of there for the next three days.” I explained as I pocketed my phone.
Relief was clear across her face and she attempted to hug me before she caught herself and took an hesitant step back. She fidgeted a little as she finally spoke.
“Thank you so much, Rory. Genuinely. I had nowhere else to turn to but you and even though you’re mad at me, you’re still willing to help me. I genuinely regret not valuing our friendship and I do wish you could give me another chance.” She admitted quietly and I resisted the urge to snort.
” it’s okay, you don’t need to thank me,”
She fidgeted again.
“Can I call you whenever? Like when I need someone to speak to or rant…” she trailed off while staring at me with a very hopeful expression on.
I let out a long sigh and slowly shook my head. “I’m sorry.” I mumbled quietly.
This time, she didn’t break into tears again. She only let out a sigh and nodded her head in understanding, then she was thanking me again before slowly turning around and heading towards her car which I just noticed. Her car wasn’t the luxurious one she drove around, it was an old model Toyota and I briefly wondered just how that bastard Peter succeeded in wrecking her this badly in such a short period,
I waited till she drove away before heading back into the compound. Jason and Jenny were still standing behind the gate and I had kind of forgotten their presences there till this very moment. They were both grinning.
” you handled that well!” Kenny gushed out and I huffed.
“You were firm but also still your usual merciful self. No one truly deserves you.” Kenny continued and I snorted as we began to head into the house.
“You weren’t harsh enough, and you shouldn’t have offered to help her at all.” Jason sighed out and I rolled my eyes.
“She helped me when I could have starved to death on the streets, Jason,” I reminded him and he grumbled something which I didn’t catch.
Once we were in the sitting room again, I turned to them just as they began to sit.
“So, guys, what do you think about helping me teach that disgusting Peter a lesson for doing that to Raya?”
As expected, they grumbled and instantly refused but I was unfazed because I knew how to convince them if I could. I just felt like I owed this last thing to Raya. To her child as well. This was more than just helping Raya. This is also gonna teach that slimy thief supposedly named Peter, a lesson he’d never forget in his entire life.

I unlocked the door and Ace slid in, holding two bags of chips. He offered one to me which I accepted with a chuckle. He had headphones around his head and his beautiful eyes were picking up the sun in a very attractive way.

The car was currently being driven by one of my drivers, and it was early noon. I and Ace had agreed to meet up today, because it’s been a while since we’ve spoken and I kind of feel responsible for him.
“How did it go yesterday?” I asked and he grimaced. I was referring to his visit back home. He went home to go see his mother so she’d know he was still alive and all.
“Can you believe she instantly wanted to use me for her benefit again?? She asked me to get married to the daughter of a chief, just so we could benefit from the chief’s riches. I don’t even like women and she knows that! But she loves to pretend like she doesn’t know that. Can you imagine that?” As he spoke, he kept rolling a piece of chip in his hand and once he was done, he threw it into his mouth.
I grimaced as his words flowed through my mind. Damn. His mother sounded like a piece of work.
“That’s not the annoying part. Can you believe she threw me out when I refused? She asked me to get lost and to return back to wherever I was coming from since I wouldn’t be of any use for her.” He continued, letting out an annoyed huff. His scent had soured a little, and I knew he was trying to conceal how that whole thing affected him but he wasn’t fooling me.
“I’m sorry.” I mumbled after a few minutes but he waved na off.
“S’okay, I’m over it already.” He brushed me off but I rolled my eyes, seeing right through his lies.
Which was why I knew I was doing the right thing when I tugged him into a hug. He stiffened against me, asking me what I was doing, but when I asked him to shut up, he slumped against me heavily and sniffed quietly.
“It just sucked, you know? I lived most of my life trying to please her and make her happy. Even though there were so many signs that she didn’t care about me, I still loved to believe that she did, which was why I didn’t run away when my elder brother did.” He whispered against my shoulder and I massaged his shoulders and just kept telling him that I understood.
When he finally pulled away, he wiped his eyes with the back of his palm and I resisted the urge to coo as I pulled out a handkerchief and handed it to him. He wiped his face and made a face.
“I feel ridiculous.”
“You still look pretty.” I offered and he laughed before resuming munching on his chips.
“Wouldn’t Jason strangle me if you heard you right now?” He drawled and I rolled my eyes.
“Brat.”
