Chapter 88
Kenny
“You can choose not to come with me.” Rory offered, his hands wrapped around my cheeks as he stared down at me, face in small frown. I was currently seated in one of the couches here in my mother’s sitting room and Rory was standing between my legs while my hands were loosely wrapped around his waist.
We weren’t currently alone, Anna and Niko were present as well but were too busy disagreeing about something to pay us any attention. But even though they decide to pay us any attention, this isn’t something out of the ordinary for them. We’ve displayed tons of attention in their presence for this to be something for them to bat an eye at.
“No, I’ll come.” I breathed out as I rose to my feet. Rory was offering me the option to choose to not show up and he’d give an excuse to grandma Nini for me, because he knew how much that encounter with Jason affected me and it only just happened yesterday, meaning that I was yet to fully recover from it. But then I also didn’t want him to go there and face Jason alone because I knew he didn’t want that at all. As his alpha, it was my duty to protect him, and knowing how intense Jason could be, it’s my duty to be present there so I could keep Jason far away from him.
I wasn’t leaving him to not go on his own because I didn’t trust him. That was far from it. I trusted Rory completely so it was definitely not about that at all. I knew how much he genuinely hated Jason, he hated him so much that till date, he’s yet to reveal to Niko that he does have a father apart from his dad– Rory.
“Are you sure?” Rory asked as he dropped his hands and I hummed. I might not feel it but I wouldn’t be showing it right now, and besides, how hard would it be? We were only going to check in on grandma nini and even though her grandson would most definitely be present, I’d make sure to stay far away from him as best as I could.
“Positive.” I responded as I brushed a kiss against his head.

When we got to the hospital, we brought the flowers we got along the way with us as we rode the elevator upstairs to the highest floor of the building. On getting to the front of the door, Rory gave me an inquiring look and I offered him an assuring smile before I pushed the door open.
The first person I noticed was Jason, simply because he was seated at the side of the bed and had his grandma’s hand clasped between his two hands while they spoke quietly.
As soon as our presence got noticed, Jason carefully dropped his grandmother’s hand and got to his feet, right before grandma Nini noticed us. She looked frailer than she was and I felt a soft pang in my chest. I never saw it coming but I ended up growing a soft spot for her in the past few years.
Her eyes lightened up beautifully just as Rory crossed the distance till he was standing beside the bed, eyes watering up as he took her hand between his
“Grandma Nini! We were so worried about you!” Rory sobbed softly, voice cracking as he gently took her into his arms for a hug. Grandma Nini’s eyes watered and she gripped Rory tight as she sobbed. She clearly loved Rory like she’d have loved a biological child of hers and it was sometimes extremely endearing to witness, especially knowing Rory also loved and cared for her equally.
The scent of Rory’s crying made my alpha tense up, sending a wave of urgency within me while pushing me to comfort our mate and instantly make him feel better, but I ended up ignoring my alpha because Rory wasn’t actually sad, he was just being emotional right now.
After dropping off the flowers in my hands, I glanced around to see as Jason glanced away from the sight of Rory and his grandma in a hug and he had an almost tight expression across his face. In the next moment, our eyes locked and at once, I felt my heartbeat stumble in my chest.
I blinked once before hurriedly glancing away, and then I pulled at the collar of my shirt because it suddenly felt tight and uncomfortable. I was glad that Jason wasn’t being his usual self by trying to crowd me against a wall like he did yesterday. He remained in the same spot at the far end of the room but that still didn’t let me let my guard down.
I ended up hugging and speaking to grandma Nini a little after Rory finally broke out of hug with her which lasted really long.
A doctor soon arrived and informed us that we’d all have to step out in order for the patient to get some rest, but that she’d be released in two days after some monitoring of her vitals.
Rory kissed grandma Nini’s cheek before we stepped right before we all stepped out of the room – Jason included.
The air felt very tense between us and no one said a thing. I reached for Rory’s hand and he instantly clung to it, inching closer to me.
Jason still surprised us even more with the way he still didn’t bother to pester us and instead turned around to walk down the other side of the hall.
Rory and I exchanged confused looks because that wasn’t the Jason we knew.
“Perhaps he’s feeling guilty since he didn’t come visit his grandma in years.” Rory mumbled as we exited the hospital and I hummed as I helped him into the car.
“Well, if that’s the case, I hope he keeps feeling guilty forever because at least it would make him leave us alone like he did today.” I muttered but Rory only snickered.

Three days after grandma Nini got released and five days since we were last at the hospital, grandma Nini was hosting a welcome back dinner and she had extended the invite to Rory and I, and that was something we couldn’t turn down even if we wanted.
On a normal day, we’d have taken the kids with us but since Jason was definitely gonna be present, we couldn’t do that at all.
“As I helped Rory slip into his shoes, I peered up at him from my crouched position.
“When are you gonna tell Niko the truth?” I asked as I slowly rose to my feet. Rory frowned and let out a long sigh. He was once again putting off telling Nikolai the truth, but I believed it was high time the kid gets made aware of it before he starts asking questions about it, seeing as he was literally getting smarter every day.

“This weekend. I promise.” He mumbled and I took his hands and brushed my lips against his fingers. I knew he was lying and the only reason he kept changing the dates was because he was scared of Nikolai’s reaction but I could already feel that Niko was gonna take the news well.
“What if he wants to meet his father?!” Rory blurted out, panic swelling within him at once. I tugged him to my arms and huffed him firmly till he melted against me.
“No overthinking, remember? When we get to that crossroad, we’re gonna cross it. Okay?” I began and he mumbled a response before gripping me tighter.

On getting to grandma Nini’s mansion, Jason was the one who let us and we all stared at each other awkwardly for a few seconds before he stepped aside for us to step in. The tension in the air was so thick, it was almost suffocating.
When handing off the wine we arrived with to Jason, I almost dropped the wine because I didn’t want my fingers to make contact with his. But it was pointless because our fingers did end up brushing and I hated that it sent a zap of spark through that spot.
At the table, after barely two minutes into the meal, a very bubbly grandma Nini began to introduce us to her infamous grandson, and then she also introduced him to us.
After that, Rory cleared his throat and claimed he had a call to take care of. He then motioned for me to come with him, and then he asked Jason to please come show him to a restraint like we haven’t been here countless times.
Once we stood in the hallway, Rory firmly informed Jason that he was to act like we’ve all never had an encounter with him before, and also that what they both shared in the past never happened.
Jason agreed with a tense nod and then we were all returning back to the dining room.
Rory wasn’t even seated before grandma Nini spoke.
“You didn’t come with your kid? I miss that little trouble and his adorable elder sister, Anna.” She spoke and I felt myself stiffen just as Rory dropped the glass of wine he was holding, spilling wine on the fine rug.
However, at the other side of the table, Jason was gaping, eyes wide and filled with shock.
“You have a child?!”
