Chapter 96: Enigma
Rory
“My Saunches, after running through multiple tests, the results says your son is an enigma.” The kind looking young omega said shortly after I accompanied her into her office. My eyes widened and blinked slowly, because I wasn’t sure i heard well.
“What?” I whispered and the doctor offered me a smile that’s supposed to be comforting but all that I could feel was confidence.
After the whole incident yesterday, after Niko and Anna returned home from school, I witnessed Niko suffer alone because he believed I wouldn’t be of any help to him since I wouldn’t understand him. After Kenny returned and finally got through to him, he was able to get Niko to stop feeling bad and even made him come over to hug me and Anna. After he finally fell asleep, Kenny suggested we come run some tests because he had an idea of what was happening to Niko which is supposed to explain a lot of things but didn’t want to say a thing without some tests getting done. I guess this was what Kenny had in mind last night but hadn’t been fully sure.
“Your son is an enigma alpha, and I believe he got it from his father. His father is an enigma, yes?” She asked and I blinked again before shaking my head.
“I- I don’t know, Doctor. But how is my son an enigma? Enigmas literally doesn’t exists…” I began, still feeling very confused and she shook her head and leaning forward.
“Enigma does exists, mr saunches. They’re just very very rare, one out of one thousand.” She explained and I let out a dry laugh after a few moments.
“But how…? He’s just three, even if that’s true, isn’t it suppose to manifest when he grows some more?” I asked and the doctor began to flip through my son’s file before stopping at a page and pushing it towards me.
“Can you see that?” She asked, referring to the page of Niko’s weight, height, IQ’s result and so on.
“Everything about him is fast. I spoke to him and he articulated words even better than some grown adults. He can easily pass off as a seven year old kid, so it’s safe to say that’s why this part of him chose to awaken early. He’s almost four, isn’t he? I guess his growth is this fast because of his father’s genes.” As she spoke, I literally had no response because I didn’t know a single thing about Jason. I didn’t even know he was an enigma???!
But thinking about it right now made it made sense, although I was very certain he doesn’t have a scent any longer like he did in the past.
“Is there… is there something that can be done?” I asked after about a minute and the doctor tilted her head. “What do you mean?”
My mind travelled back to the amount of times Niko had complained about wishing he wasn’t so different and i guess that was all thanks to the enigma in him. It was what was always making him feel like he was a monster, and I didn’t like that he felt that way. Kenny ended up explaining what went down between him and Niko to me last night. Apprently Niko opened up to him because he believed Kenny would understand him better and just won’t try to baby him and also not try to convince him that he wasn’t a monster when he was one. He went on to say that Niko said his eyes sometimes turn red for a few seconds before returning back to normal, and that after all what Niko told him, he just believed it was best we come run some tests.
Presently, he was with Niko, keeping him company.
I let out a long breath and leaned forward, eyes locked with the doctor’s as I spoke. “Is there a way the enigma part of him can get put down or suppressed?” I asked and the doctor’s eyes widened.
“What?! Why would you want to do that?!”
I shrugged and let out another long breath.
“Because it makes him feel like a monster so I’m certain he’d thank me for it.”
The Doctor sighed before speaking. “Mr Saunches, if you do that, you’ll be basically killing your son’s wolf, which would break him literally. He’ll turn into a shell and won’t ever remain the same ever again.” The doctor pointed out and I got the urge to pull my hair out of frustration.
“So what can I do? I only want the best for my son.” I admitted quietly and the doctor gave me an understanding smile before starting to scribble something down.
“I understand you but killing his enigma is a no-no. The only reason your son feels that way is because he’s yet to come to terms with himself, because he doesn’t understand himself yet,” she paused for a minute.
“I’m gonna refer you to a kids therapist who’d be able to understand him properly. Enigmas are fragile as kids, more than betas, Omegas and regular alphas, so they need special care and attention, especially from a fellow enigma like themselves. Is his father in his life?” The doctor asked and I bit on my bottom lip before slowly shaking my head slowly.
The doctor was quiet as she continued to write into Niko’s file. Once she was done, she glanced up at me and offered me an understanding look before speaking.
“If you really went to help your son, then I’d really suggest his father gets let into his son’s life. Since he’s most certainly an enigma, he’s the only one who’d be able to fully understand and help your son in this discovery phase.”

Kenny helped me button my shirt before he massaged my shoulders, trying to search my eyes.
“You sure you really want to do this?” He asked and I exhaled before nodding. I was going over to meet up with Jason this evening, hours after returning from the hospital. After the entire conversation I had with the doctor, I decided that I needed to have a conversation with Jason to confirm if he was an enigma before anything. Since I had literally responded to his text two nights ago of him asking for one Chance from us to meet him, I only had to text him that I was ready and then I sent him a location as well.
“I don’t have a choice, and stop worrying, I’m gonna be fine,” I assured Kenny but I could feel my stomach already in nervous knots.
“What me to accompany you?” He asked and i shook my head and exhaled again.
“I’ll be fine, I promise. And Niko needs you more than I do.” I responded and his eyes darted sideways to the bean bag where Niko had fallen asleep in. After the incident yesterday, Niko hsd been attached to Kenny at the hips since. The doctor said it was because his enigma was longing for a connection with another but since it seemingly had no other option, he had taken Solace and comfort in the one thing present that was the closest to being an enigma, and that was Kenny who was a regular alpha.

“Okay,” Kenny finally agreed before leaning down to kiss my head. “Be safe and call me if you come across any trouble.”
I hugged him tightly and breathed in his scent, which had traces of Niko and Anna mixed with it due to the amount of times he had hugged and scented them today. I sighed, not wanting to leave the comfort of his arms right now, but I reminded myself Jason was definitely already on the way to the location I sent him, so I couldn’t back out now, not when I urgently wanted to know the status of Jason’s wolf.

“Are you an enigma?” I blurted out instead of beating around the bush. I was sitting across Jason who was clad in a tight dark shirt and dark pants. We were currently in a cafe and coffees had already been brought to us, but neither of us were yet to touch ours.
If Jason was shocked by my question, he didn’t indicate, he only let out a small huff, and then his jaw clenched tight for a moment, and then he was leaning forward. Once again, I noted the fact that he didn’t have any scent, but that didn’t make him feel less menacing. He literally filled out his seat, and his sheer presence felt like it filled up this entire room.
“I am.” He finally responded and my eyes widened as shock so intense crashed through me.
So… the doctor had been right! He really was an enigma?!!
However, he continued.
“Or… I used to be,” he added and my brows furrowed as I frowned in confusion because he wasn’t making sense right now.
“That’s exactly why I wanted to see you this whole time.” He continued and my frown deepened.
“I used to be an enigma, but my wolf is now dormant, so now I’m now a regular alpha.” He explained and my eyes widened.
“What? Why? Can wolves really do that?”
This time, he let out a bitter scoff.
“Of course not. My wolf only went dormant as punishment on me.”
“Huh? Why?”
He leaned back and responded flatly.
“Because of you.”
