Chapter 117: Initiate Intermediate Rank?
Alden woke up in a luxurious room.
The sunlight was peeking through the curtains that covered the large windows.
Soft bed. Fluffy pillows. The kind of luxury that should make anyone feel like royalty.
Man, I feel refreshed.
He stretched with a yawn, dragging himself out of bed.
A quick, cold shower later, and he was wide awake.
He quickly got dressed in clean clothes from his storage ring. He ordered breakfast and ate in comfortable silence.
By the time he was done, it was already noon. He had slept for nearly ten hours.
Was that excessive?
Maybe.
Did he care?
Not really.
After checking out of the hotel, he made his way to the exit—only to hear the last voice he wanted to hear.
“Hey Alden”, A truly unpleasant voice for Alden.
Alden’s steps froze.
Ah. Of course. Just my luck.
Slowly, he turned around. He already knew who it was.
And there she was—Seles, standing there alone with that ever-so-perfectly polite smile of hers.
“Hey Seles,” he responded calmly. “Fancy seeing you here.”
“That’s what I would like to say.” Seles tilted her head slightly, her expression unreadable. “I didn’t expect to see you here.”
Yeah, sure.
Alden could see it clearly—the gears turning in her head.
The way her sharp gaze was scanning him, trying to analyse every little detail.
__
What’s he doing here?
Seles’s eyes scanned Alden, this time a bit more carefully, as if she was connecting dots she wasn’t supposed to.
Now that I think about it, the scammer’s physique was also similar to Alden’s.
The scammer had black hair and a physique eerily similar to Alden’s.
What if—
Follow new episodes on the "N0vel1st.c0m".
A crazy theory formed in her mind.
How would my father, who was at Overlord Rank, mistakenly teleport some random passerby?
That shouldn’t have happened.
Unless—
What if that scammer was actually Alden?
It would explain everything.
He must’ve sensed Alden and sent him to safety, similar to how he sent us there.
But how did he make my attack vanish?
Although he had more money than ordinary people, by noble’s standards, it was nothing.
He couldn’t even buy a proper artifact with that measly money.
So how did he buy a magic nullifying artifact?
Those artifacts were rare, and not just anyone could buy them even if they had enough money.
If Alden truly was that scammer… then he was hiding something much bigger than I had previously thought.
__
Alden could feel the sharp gaze of Seles; she was analysing him.
Damn it. She’s suspicious.
But does she know for sure?
Nope.
And even if she knows it, she can’t do anything without proof.
“Is something wrong, Seles?” he asked, tilting his head innocently.
Seles blinked.
“No, I was just surprised to see you here.” Her face had the most polite smile.
“Likewise.” Alden chuckled.
“What are you doing here?” Seles asked.
For a moment, there was silence.
He knew what she was doing.
Seles was probing him.
She was looking for cracks. A slip-up.
Something to confirm that wild little theory brewing inside her head.
Too bad for her—she had nothing.
“I was on an academy mission and was just returning back today.” Alden responded calmly. “What about you?”
“What a coincidence,” she responded. “We are also on a mission, and we are just about to go to complete it.”
“I see. Good luck then.” Alden spoke as he turned around to leave.
She didn’t stop him.
But he could feel it.
The suspicion.
The unspoken I’ll be watching you.
Well.
That was fun.
__
Back on the bustling streets of Valloria, Alden let out a breath.
Phew, that was awkward.
Alden thought after leaving the hotel. He was back on the bustling streets of Valloria.
Seles is definitely suspicious of me.
What’s she going to do with only suspicion? It’s not like she has any proof.
Those dark alleys didn’t even have any CCTV for her to check.
He shrugged off the useless thoughts as he made his way towards the teleportation hub.
Valloria was as chaotic as ever—merchants were shouting, people were rushing somewhere, and the occasional pickpocket thought they were quick.
They weren’t..
Finally, he arrived in front of the familiar teleportation hub.
He walked inside without hesitation. After completing the procedure, he quickly entered his designated room.
The shimmering blue portal was similar to the one he took before.
He stepped through.
The nausea was barely noticeable this time.
And just like that—
He was back from his little adventure.
Astralis Academy island.
He didn’t waste much time and started walking back towards the academy campus.
He wasn’t going to attend the classes anyway, so he decided to train.
__
Arriving back at his dorm, Alden threw himself onto his bed.
Then—
Wait.
FK I forgot.
He sat up.
I didn’t buy what I went to buy.
I forgot to buy the sheath for my sword.
Damn it.
After cursing for a while. He pulled out his new ManaSync – the one given to him by Cipher.
It had her contact details.
He sent her a message, listing everything he needed. A sheath and some mana potions.
Although he had lots of healing potions, his stock of mana potions was steadily decreasing.
After messaging Cipher about the things he needed, he entered the training room.
It was time for breaking through.
__
Alden trained with his sword. His mind was utmost focused.
His sword cut through the air; his movements were precise.
He was trying to replicate that technique—the one he had used against the boss monster in the dungeon.
He felt if he could somehow replicate that technique, he would be able to unlock the next step of his weapon art.
But no matter how many times he tried.
Nothing.
It wasn’t clicking.
It had worked back then. So why not now?
He pushed himself. Faster.
His mind replayed that moment over and over.
Still—
Nothing.
Three hours later, his body finally gave out.
He slumped onto the ground. He was exhausted.
Just then—
A cold sensation spread through him.
His energy surged, and his mana stabilised.
He quickly understood what had happened.
I have broken through.
Unlike when breaking through major rank, minor rank breakthroughs don’t require conscious efforts, and it happens automatically.
Alden smirked as he opened his status window to check his stats.

He felt satisfied looking at his increased stats.
Then—
Something else caught his eye.
The trial notification had changed.
[▒▒▒▒▒ Trial—You may challenge the trial, but each success increases the waiting time for your next attempt. Death in the trial means death in reality.
[Next Trial – The host will be teleported to trial within one week.]
The heck?
Why did it change?
Does it have to be attempted in a specific time?
Looking at the changed description, that seemed to be the case.
Alden frowned.
His original plan was to delay the trial until after the major event coming up.
But now…
He didn’t have that choice anymore.
Damn it.
