Chapter 120: Why did it have to be her?
After gathering everything he needed, Alden stepped out of his room.
The door clicked shut behind him, locking automatically.
With slow steps, he made his way to the elevator.
The moment he pressed the button, the doors slid open almost instantly.
Someone was already present there.
Amyra.
She stood still and composed as ever, her cold violet eyes were fixed forward.
Alden didn’t hesitate and stepped in.
“Good morning,” he greeted, his tone calm.
“Good morning,” she responded with a small nod.
Alden noted the change.
In the past, she would have ignored him entirely, treating him as if he didn’t exist.
Lately, however, she had been acknowledging him more often.
He had even caught her staring at him sometimes.
Was it the effect of that cringey line?
Or has she perhaps fallen for my handsome self?
Alden sighed internally.
I’m just overthinking things again.
After their brief exchange, the elevator fell into silence.
A few seconds later, the elevator chimed, and the doors slid open at the ground floor, cutting through the awkward silence.
As they stepped out of the elevator, the common lobby greeted them.
Alden entered the common lobby.
He saw Aziel and Cecilia standing near cafeteria having conversation.
Aziel, who always noticed Alden, for some reason was too focused on his conversation with a stupid smile.
Alden smirked.
Definitely not interrupting that.
He had no intention to disturb the lovebirds, so he decided to just head toward the Astralis Nexus.
He had to submit his mission completion.
He could have done that after classes, but there was still half an hour for them to start.
The academy campus was already bustling with students, some chatting in groups while others hurried to their classes.
Follow new episodes on the "N0vel1st.c0m".
Upon reaching his Astralis Nexus, he walked towards the reception where the same lady was seated.
It was morning time, so there were very few students.
“I would like to report mission completion.” Alden spoke to the receptionist.
“What was the mission ID?” The receptionist asked.
After providing the necessary details and handing over the boss monster’s remains, his account was instantly credited with Astra.
Satisfied, he turned and made his way toward his classroom.
He soon arrived in the class building.
When he pushed open the classroom door, it was already half-full.
Some students were settling into their seats while a few were gossiping among themselves.
Alden walked to his usual spot—near the window, at the back of the class.
He preferred it this way.
It gave him a clear view outside, and more importantly, it minimised unnecessary social interactions.
Aziel was already there sitting alone. Cecilia was back with her group at the front.
The way she was stealing glances at Aziel indicated that she wanted to sit with him.
“Hey, bro, when did you leave the dorm?” He asked. “I was waiting for you.”
“I didn’t want to disturb you lovebirds, so I left quietly.” Alden smirked.
“W–what lovebirds? It’s nothing like that, ok.” Aziel was flustered. “Me and Cecilia are just friends, ok.”
“Oh sure, buddy.” Alden said, grinning, “I totally believe you.”
His voice was sarcastic.
Just then –
Amyra entered the classroom, taking her usual seat.
As expected, she didn’t even spare him a glance.
At least, not openly.
A few minutes passed, and soon, only four students were missing
Lucien, Seles, Zephyr and Nyx.
He knew Lucien and Seles were on a mission.
It seems they have not arrived yet.
Zephyr was probably also on one—he was always punctual otherwise, arriving a few minutes early.
As for Nyx,
Alden had a feeling she just enjoyed making grand entrances.
Sometimes he even wondered if she enjoyed getting on the nerves of Sorin.
Soon Sorin entered the class, and as always, taking notice of Nyx not being present, he started to take attendance.
And as always,
Just as he reached her name,
Nyx was already present in her seat magically.
Sorin let out a sigh and moved on.
__
Once attendance was done, Sorin made an announcement.
“Three weeks from now, your class will be going on a field trip.”
All the students started murmuring in excitement.
Making plans about their trip.
But Sorin quickly poured cold water on their thoughts.
“It won’t be a picnic.”
“The location will be a dormant ancient ruin exploration site.”
As Alden listened to the announcement, he only had one thought.
So it has started.
The ancient ruins were going to be the place where the first major event was going to happen.
I need to complete my trial as fast as possible and prepare for the major event.
He didn’t know how much time his trial was going to take.
But he hoped it wouldn’t be too much.
After the announcement, classes resumed.
One after another, Alden sat through the mind-numbing theoretical lessons.
Only one practical class was scheduled for the day.
Everything else? Just boring theoretical lectures.
Time passed, and finally, it was time for the last class of the day—
Close Combat Training.
Unlike the mages’ equivalent, this elective was exclusively for close-combat fighters.
Their training took place separately, ensuring more focused lessons.
Alden exhaled as he stood up.
Finally, something interesting.
__
Alden made his way toward the Combat Hall, a massive structure designed specifically for close-combat training.
The hall was filled with many sparring arenas, each spacious enough to allow full-scale fights without interference.
Students were already gathering, talking among themselves in excitement.
Standing in the centre was a middle-aged man with soft features. He looked very welcoming.
He was the instructor – Varian
His narrow, slit-like eyes gave him a very calculating and cunning look.
But he was totally opposite of that. He was a total battle maniac.
The man was a training demon in human skin.
His so-called ‘exercises’ were so brutal that even the toughest students cursed his name daily.
Varian clapped his hands to gather their attention.
“Listen up,” Varian’s deep voice echoed through the hall.
“You’ll be sparring today. Find a partner.” He didn’t waste any useless words and declared straightforwardly.
Alden sighed internally.
Of course.
It had to be like this.
This was one of the things he disliked about practical classes most—forced interaction.
Around him, students started to pair up eagerly.
Their faces were happy that they had been spared those difficult drills today.
Alden, on the other hand, had no one.
The only person he could even consider was Aziel, his closest (and only) friend.
Aziel turned to him, but Alden could see the subtle emotions in his eyes.
His gaze kept wandering toward Cecilia.
Alden smirked.
“Go.”
Aziel hesitated. “Huh?”
“You want to spar with her, right? Don’t worry about me,” Alden said lazily, waving him off. “I’ll be fine.”
“Are you sure?” Aziel looked guilty for a second, but it didn’t last long.
“Yeah, yeah,” Alden rolled his eyes. “Go already.”
Aziel gave a stupid grin before heading over to Cecilia.
Alden exhaled.
Great. Now I’m alone again.
He glanced around the hall.
One by one, the students finished forming pairs until, finally, only two people remained unpaired.
Alden.
And Nyx.
Instructor Varian scanned the room.
His sharp gaze landed on the two of them.
“You two,” he said, pointing between them. “Pair up today.”
He didn’t give any room for any argument.
Alden turned to look at Nyx.
She was standing at the edge of the hall, with her usual cold expression.
Their eyes met.
For a moment, neither spoke.
Alden sighed.
Of all people…why did it have to be her?
