Chapter 279: Chapter 279 Reason why he choosen Lia
Gray leaned against the mirror-lined wall with casual arrogance, hands in his pockets, watching her press the button with more force than necessary.
He waited a beat.
Then said innocently, “You know, you looked cute when you blushed.”
Lilith didn’t respond.
He continued anyway.
His voice dropped lower. Smoother. “You usually look like you’d eat someone alive, but just now…” He leaned closer, eyes narrowing slightly. “You looked like someone who needs help… unzipping.”
Lilith turned her head slowly, glaring at him.
He smiled wider. “You’re right, I am shameless. Especially when your ears turn red like that. Very distracting.”
She looked away again.
He stepped closer.
Not too close but close enough.
“Want to hear more?” he whispered, clearly enjoying every second of her struggling not to scream.
“I could describe a few more things. Like what I’d do if you ever wore that blue nightgown without locking the door…”
Her hands clenched.
“And how I’d hold your ankles,” he added casually, “so you don’t run away halfway—like last time when you kicked me.”
“Human doll,” she said under her breath, warning in her voice.
He just chuckled.
Then leaned back with a satisfied sigh. “Okay, okay. I’ll be good… for now.”
She didn’t say a word.
But he saw her reflection in the mirror…eyes wild, cheeks warm, lips slightly parted.
He grinned to himself.
Best elevator ride of his life.

Rayan sighed as he stared at the candle flickering before him, the wax almost gone, pooling into the ceramic holder like it was mourning time itself. His hand rested on the table, unmoving, and his gaze had long since gone distant. The light reflected in his eyes, but the warmth didn’t reach them. His thoughts were no longer in this room. They had returned to someone he had long buried in the folds of “what if.”
Lilith.
He hadn’t thought of her for days. Weeks, maybe. But tonight, something about the silence, the melting candle, the way the shadows clung to the corners of his flat….all of it pulled her image out from the dust-covered corners of his mind.
She used to be boring, he told himself. Too quiet. The kind of girl who always depended on her best friend Lia for everything—freelance projects, job interviews, even replying to emails. He remembered how she used to sit beside him in college cafés, answering in short nods and soft “mhm” sounds, barely adding to conversations. It was exhausting, like talking to a wall with pretty eyes.
But at least she was sincere.
And that sincerity had felt oddly grounding, back then. Especially when everyone else around him wore masks. She never tried to impress him. Never acted clingy. She just… existed beside him. Always calm. Always watching.
And maybe that’s what disturbed him sometimes.

The way she looked at him back then…silent, intense, as if she had never seen a man in her life. Those stares, soft but never-ending, used to creep him out. It felt like she was memorizing him. Like he was the only thing she had decided to learn in her lifetime. He never said anything, but deep inside, it made him uncomfortable.
He shook his head slowly.
That was the reason, wasn’t it?
Why he chose Lia over her.
Lia was bubbly, exciting, easy to manipulate. She flattered him. Made him feel important. Lilith… made him feel exposed.
His original plan had been simple: marry Lilith…secure a clean, beautiful wife with a quiet reputation and keep Lia close, in secret, as his entertainment.
It was perfect.
Until Lilith changed.
He couldn’t say when it began.
It was small at first… She stopped reacting to him. Her eyes weren’t following him anymore. And worst of all… she started smiling at someone else.
She had disappeared from his orbit before he could stop it.
He leaned back in his chair, reaching for his phone. With one swipe, the gallery opened.
Photos of Lilith filled the screen.
Some she had sent him year ago….
When she was fifteen, tall but still carrying the soft roundness of youth, her blue eyes innocent.
Another when she turned eighteen—those same features matured, sharper now, her gaze distant and quiet, like she had already learned too much too soon.
And then there was the recent photo.
It came from a friend who worked at the hospital.
He had spotted Lilith walking through the hallway…wearing heels, dressed in black, with that unreadable calm on her face. And beside her… was another man.
Sebastian Carter.
A name that carried weight. Power. Scandal. Money.
Rayan’s stomach twisted when he saw it.
Sebastian’s hand had been near her back. Their body language wasn’t close, but it wasn’t distant either. And Lilith… she was smiling. A gergeous smile. The kind he had never seen when she was with him.
He hated how it made him feel.
Like something he thought belonged to him had been stolen—willingly.
Lia was already pregnant with his child.
He should be focusing on that. He should be planning their future.
And yet… his thoughts were still with the girl he lost.
And maybe never truly understood.
Suddenly, Rayan’s phone buzzed in his hand. He looked down, and a soft smile broke across his face when he saw the caller ID—Lia. He quickly swiped to answer, his voice already laced with warmth as he pressed the phone to his ear. “Hello?”
“I’m sorry, Ray baby!” came Lia’s sweet, sugarcoated voice on the other end. “I was busy in shooting and—Ahhh!”
The sudden cry made Rayan sit up straighter in his chair, worry flashing across his face like lightning. “What happened, sweetheart?” he asked, voice sharp with concern. “I told you, you don’t need to work! Why don’t you ever listen to me? Is it the money? Didn’t I say I’ll handle everything?”
Lia laughed breathily, brushing his worry off with ease. “It’s okay, Ray. I just twisted my ankle a little. I was walking out of the studio to get better network coverage to talk to you. Silly me, right?”
