Chapter 291: Chapter 291 Don’t disappear again
He pulled back slightly, just enough to look at her face. His expression wasn’t calm. His brows were furrowed, his lips pressed in a thin line. “Where is it?” he asked, clearly not convinced. His voice held that hint of jealousy only she could bring out. He had woken up and she wasn’t there. That emptiness had wrapped around him like a nightmare.

Lilith pointed downward with a small smirk, her fingers brushing the side of her dress. “Here,” she said simply.

He followed her finger—

And saw a grumpy black cat standing beside a small bag, tail flicking sharply, as if daring anyone to touch it.

The bag had clearly fallen when Alexander hugged her, and now Loki stood there like a miniature demon guard, one paw resting on the handle protectively.

Alexander raised an eyebrow.

Loki huffed, turning his tiny head away.

Huh! he scoffed in his little head. First he nearly dies, then he acts like a hero for hugging my Elder Sister. Tch.

Lilith bit back a laugh.

But Alexander just looked at the cat.

Then pulled her into his arms again.

“Don’t disappear again.”

Lilith bent down and picked up the breakfast bagm

Her eyes were soft as she looked at him, brushing a wrinkle on his sleeve that had appeared from the sudden hug. “How are you feeling?” she asked gently, her voice lighter than before, but her gaze still full of concern.

Alexander looked at her, then down at the floor for a second. “Not good,” he admitted quietly.

The honesty made her heart squeeze.

Without saying a word, she stepped to his side and held his arm with both hands, steadying him. “Come on,” she said, guiding him back toward the ward, her tone gentle like she was helping a child who had just recovered from a nightmare. He didn’t resist. He followed her lead, each step slower than usual, but he didn’t let go of her hand even once.

Lilith helped him onto the bed again, smoothing the blanket behind him, adjusting the pillow.

He didn’t argue. He just let her do everything, his eyes half-lidded from exhaustion, but his heart full from just having her near.

Behind them, the soft click-clack of tiny paws echoed as Loki followed like a proper escort. His tail swayed confidently, ears perked up, as he trotted proudly behind Lilith and Alexander like he was the one in charge. A couple of passing nurses noticed him immediately.

“Awwwwww, look at the cat!”

“He’s sooo cute!”

“Whose baby is this?”

Loki paused mid-step, his ears flicking as he turned to look at the nurses with his most elegant stare. Hmph, he thought smugly, his tiny chest puffing out a bit more. If I was this famous among women now, imagine what would happen when I grow up into my real form again. Heheh…

He strutted behind them like a tiny king.

Lilith’s eyes slowly drifted to his hand and the moment she saw the angry red mark on the back of it, her breath caught. The skin was bruised where the IV had been ripped out. Her heart sank. He must’ve pulled it out himself… probably when he got up, searching for her. She sighed quietly, her fingers brushing lightly over the back of his hand as if an apology could be passed through touch.

Without saying anything, she stood up and looked around the ward. She found the first aid kit in the corner cabinet, opened it, and brought it back with calm efficiency. Alexander said nothing as she sat beside him, gently lifting his hand into her lap. Her fingers moved carefully—cleaning the small wound, applying ointment, covering it with soft gauze and tape. Each movement was light. Precise. Like she’d done it a hundred times before.

He watched her the entire time.

Not a word.

Just her soft expression… the quiet wrinkle of worry between her brows… the way her eyes focused entirely on him.

When she finished, she stood and rang the bell. The nurses arrived, followed by a doctor. She stepped back to let them do their job, but her eyes never left him. The doctor checked his vitals, looked over his chart, and after a few moments, gave a nod. “He’s stable,” he said. “Just needs rest. He’s been through a lot, but physically—he’s fine.”

Lilith exhaled slowly, relief pouring out in silence.

After the room cleared again, she turned her gaze toward him.

Her eyes moved up to his head, wrapped carefully in a thick white bandage.

She didn’t say anything for a long time.

She just stared.

The peaceful air inside the ward shattered like glass when the door creaked open again. Ana stepped inside, dressed in elegance as always, her hair pinned neatly, a luxury breakfast bag in hand. But it wasn’t her clothes or perfume that filled the room—it was the coldness in her eyes, sharp and dark, as they landed on Lilith standing beside Alexander’s bed.

“What are you doing here again?” she asked flatly, as if Lilith’s presence was a stain she couldn’t scrub clean.

Before Lilith could speak, Alexander’s voice cut through the air like a blade.

“Mom. Mind your tongue with her.” His tone was cold. Controlled. But his jaw was tight, and his hand gripped the edge of the blanket.

Ana didn’t flinch. She placed the breakfast on the side table, still keeping her gaze on Lilith like she wasn’t a person but a problem. “Look, Lilith,” she said, her voice sharp but strangely calm. “I don’t think you should stay with him. You were just a secretary. That’s all. He’s the CEO of the Carter Group. He belongs to the sky. And you—” her lips curled faintly, “you’re the ground.”

The ward room fell silent.

Lilith didn’t speak. She didn’t defend herself. Her hands were folded in front of her, her eyes lowered slightly, unreadable.

But Alexander—

Alexander couldn’t hold it in anymore.

“Mom!” he snapped, his voice rising. “I’ve had enough of you.” His fists were clenched now, and his breath was uneven. “You don’t get to stand there and talk about her like she’s nothing.” His throat tightened. “You think because you raised me you can decide who I love? That you can throw words like knives and I’ll just sit here and smile?”

Ana stared, stunned.

He wasn’t done.

“You say she’s the ground?” he whispered, his voice trembling with fury. “Well, good. Because that means she’s what holds me up.”
