Chapter 402: Family
Max followed her gaze and looked back at the statue—at the forehead of his mother’s statue. And there it was, just like she said. A bright emerald, shaped like a perfect pentagon, shimmered faintly under the sunlight pouring through the dome. It looked almost alive, pulsing gently as if waiting.

“That emerald,” Lenavira continued, “is said to hold the power of a divine spark. It’s the symbol of our royal bloodline, and it represents the life and prosperity of the entire kingdom. But…” she paused with a quiet sigh, “it doesn’t respond to elves. No matter how many of us try, nothing ever happens.”

She looked at Max more seriously now. “Last time, your sister—Freya—persuaded me that she could bring life back to our kingdom. I didn’t believe her at all. I mean… how could a human do what even the purest elves had failed to do in our own land?” Her voice dropped a little, filled with memory.

“But she was determined. She convinced me. And after I persuaded the elders, she was brought here. She walked into this very hall, touched the emerald on the forehead of Ancestor Caelira…” Lenavira paused and smiled faintly, “and she did it. The kingdom bloomed with life again.”

Her voice grew softer. “It only lasted three years. But it was enough for us to know the truth. That she wasn’t ordinary. And neither are you.”

Max nodded his body lifted in the air as he arrived before the face of his mother. ‘Mother, where are you?’ He asked softly in his mind as his hand moved towards the statue slowly touching the emerald.

But the moment his hand touched the emerald, a jolt of pain course through his head as a very deep, buried memory surfaced in his mind.

***

In a grand palace that looked like it had been pulled from the dreams of another world, everything shimmered with an ethereal beauty that defied reality. The walls were made of a silver-white stone that glowed faintly under the light of floating crystal orbs, casting soft reflections across the vast halls.

Towering pillars stretched toward a ceiling that looked like the night sky itself—twinkling with stars that slowly moved, as if the heavens had taken shelter within the palace. The floor beneath was carved from translucent jade, and as one walked upon it, golden patterns bloomed beneath their feet like ripples in water.

And within that grand, dreamlike palace, a ten-year-old boy with a slightly chubby face, black hair, and bright blue eyes darted through the halls like a rocket. His laughter echoed as his feet pattered across the glowing jade floor, weaving around pillars and drifting tapestries, his small form a blur of energy and excitement.

After a few minutes of running, he reached a larger room, grand and quiet, where he saw a serene figure floating in the air—his sister, cross-legged, surrounded by a soft aura of calm.

“Big Sister Freya! Let’s go! It’s time to eat!” he shouted, his voice full of cheer. “Mother is calling us!”

Freya slowly opened her eyes—deep ocean blue, calm and wise—and looked at him with a soft, warm smile that instantly lit up her graceful face. “Let’s go, Maxy,” she said gently, landing on her feet without a sound as she began walking toward him.

“Hehe! The one who reaches last has to wash the dishes!” Max grinned mischievously before dashing off again, his figure disappearing down the corridor with unstoppable energy.

Freya let out a soft laugh, shaking her head with a peaceful smile, and followed after him, her pace graceful as always.

A moment later, Max burst into another grand hall—this one shaped like a dining area, with a long table carved from glowing crystal wood and chairs arranged neatly around it. The warm aroma of food filled the space, making his eyes light up. “Yes! I’m not last!” Max shouted happily, hopping with excitement.

“Look again, Maxy,” came Freya’s voice, calm and teasing.

Max spun around—and his jaw dropped. There she was, already sitting at the table, gracefully nibbling on her food with a composed expression.

“You’re cheating!” Max cried, pointing a finger at her. “Big Sister, you can’t use your powers! We already agreed—no teleporting in the palace! You cheated!”

Freya just smiled, a tiny spark of mischief in her eyes, and continued eating like nothing happened.

“Max, why are you shouting again?” a soft, gentle voice echoed through the hall, and Max turned around to see a figure walking in gracefully. It was a beautiful lady, an adult woman with long black hair cascading down her back and calm, loving eyes that glowed with warmth. She looked at Max with a faint smile, one filled with endless affection. “Have you lost again?” she asked teasingly.

“No! I didn’t lose!” Max pouted, crossing his arms. “Big sis cheated! She teleported here just now, and I ran! That’s unfair!”

“Alright, alright,” his mother said with a light laugh as she walked over and patted Max’s head, her hand warm and gentle, full of care. “We all know our Max is the fastest, right?”

Max blushed a little, lowering his head bashfully as he nodded. Her praise always made his heart swell with happiness, even when he pretended to act tough.

“Now let’s go and eat,” she said, leading him over to the long, glowing dining table as more maids stepped in quietly, placing plates of steaming food across the polished surface. The aroma filled the air, making Max’s stomach growl slightly.

He climbed onto one of the chairs and sat down properly, looking up at his mother. “Mother… where’s Father? He’s not home yet?” he asked with a small frown. “He told me yesterday that he would eat with me today.”

“He’ll be here soon,” she replied softly, placing a hand on his back with gentle reassurance as she sat beside him. “Let’s eat first, my son.”

“But… Father…” Max hesitated, glancing at the empty seat beside her.

“I told you,” she said again, her voice becoming just a little firm, though it still overflowed with love. “He will be here.”

Max nodded slowly, accepting her words, and turned to look at the food in front of him.

“The one who finishes last has to clean the training hall tomorrow!” Freya suddenly called out, her voice teasing.

Max’s eyes shot wide open as he saw how quickly she was eating. “You’ve already eaten half your plate! Big Sis, you’re cheating again!” he shouted, pointing dramatically at her food, clearly flustered.

Just then, a warm, deep laugh echoed through the hall, and the air shifted slightly as a tall figure entered. A middle-aged man with dark blue hair and a broad, heavy-built body stepped into the room. His presence was calm but powerful, his sharp eyes softening the moment they landed on Max.

“Looks like I arrived just in time. And Max is already shouting, huh?” he said, his voice full of warmth as he walked over and ruffled Max’s hair affectionately. “Did my little warrior lose another race?”

Max looked up at him, grinning wide. “No! She cheated again!”

His father laughed heartily and took his seat beside them. “Then let’s eat. And tonight, I’ll tell you one of those stories you like. But only if you finish your food before Freya. Deal?”

Max’s eyes sparkled with excitement as he picked up his spoon. “Deal!” he shouted happily.

And just like that, their family sat together in the glowing hall of their palace, laughter and love filling the space as they began their meal—just another perfect evening in a world that felt like home.

But just like the ever-flowing current of time, not everything stays forever.
