Chapter 48: General Zane Foster
After another week of rigorous training in the Dimension of Time, Max was ready to depart toward the general quarters of Crestford City.
‘It’s cool to see all the new names for the skills,’ Max mused as he checked his status.

‘Sadly, I couldn’t improve the level of the Flame Creation skill,’ Max sighed, seeing the only skill with an unchanged name.
As for why he couldn’t level up the skill beyond level 100, he believed it had something to do with the “incomplete” tag the skill displayed on its status.
‘I need to study the diary and the books I obtained with the skill to understand the Flame Creation skill,’ Max mused, recalling that he had obtained many things when he acquired the Flame Creation skill.
After checking his status, Max lay down on his bed, waiting for the night to pass. Tomorrow, he would leave for the General Quarters to meet General Zane Foster of Crestford City.
There were many cities under one district, and it was impossible to look after each one. Hence, a general had been stationed in each city under a district for the betterment of both the cities and the district.
‘Let’s sleep early today,’ Max thought, closing his eyes and falling asleep.

The next day, Max took a train to the General Quarters and arrived at the time he was given.
“There are a lot of people gathered here,” Max noticed as he departed the train.
The distance from the station to the General Quarters wasn’t far. One could see the mega infrastructures in the distance, all belonging to the General Quarters.
Currently, hundreds of people were gathered around the General Quarters. Most appeared to be young men, but there was no shortage of people of various ages.

“Zixi said she would come to pick me up,” Max muttered, wondering if he should go ahead on his own or wait for Zixi to show up. However, he doubted she would be able to find him in such a big crowd.
“I guess I’ll wait for her at the entrance,” he decided, beginning to walk through the dense crowd.
It didn’t take long before he arrived at the entrance leading to the General Quarters. It was packed with people, but the entrance was large enough to make the crowd seem small.
Max entered the portal and intended to wait for Zixi but then spotted a strikingly familiar figure.
“What is he doing here?” Max wondered and called out, “Hey, William!”
William immediately turned to him upon hearing his call and waved. “Max, you came.” He laughed and walked over to him.
“So, what are you doing here?” Max asked once William came near him.
William smiled slightly. “Zixi said she would be busy, so she called me to escort you to General Zane Foster.”
“I see,” Max nodded in understanding, but then a smirk appeared on his face. “That means you’re my escort, right?”
William understood what Max meant and gritted his teeth. “Only for the time being.” He then looked ahead. “Let’s go.” He began leading the way to General Zane Foster.
Max followed silently. He had only asked for a recommendation spot and expected to take a test to earn it. However, Zixi’s father had said that since Max was Zixi’s friend, he would let him directly have a go with the five chosen members to test his strength.
Max agreed and he couldn’t be any more happier about that.
Not long after, they arrived at a rectangular-shaped building. ‘Combat Hall’ was written in bold red letters at the top.
As Max entered, he immediately felt many people’s attention on him, but was ignored soon after. Everyone’s attention was on the three young men and two ladies at the center of the arena.
Max glanced them and mused. ‘So they are my opponents. All of them are at level 10.’
“Look, the top five have been chosen, and now it’s time for the top three. Only three of them will have a chance to participate in the recruitment test for the Phoenix Order.”
“Who do you think is the strongest among them? Tim Drake? Eren Volfire?”
“It’s hard to say since they haven’t battled against each other yet, but it’s said that Eren Volfire is the strongest genius of our Crestford City.”
“I’ve heard that too. They say he has the strongest attack and the strongest defense. But I think Tim Drake is also very strong. Since he has an assassin-type class, he might have an advantage against Eren Volfire.”
“You guys are seriously underestimating Anna Hails. She’s a summoner, and until now, she hasn’t shown her true strength.”
“There’s also Thomas Wells, the gunner, and Lyra Duskshade. If we ignore Thomas Wells since he’s a long-range hunter, then Lyra can also give Eren Volfire a hard time. Her powers are related to the Moon, which is very special.”
The crowd erupted as the top five were chosen. They were excited to see which three of the five would advance to the recruitment test for the Phoenix Order guild and even more eager to find out who among them was the strongest.
Max, standing on the side, heard them and thought, ‘They are strong, but one of them will be unlucky here.’ He observed them while silently making his way toward Zixi.
“How confident are you?” Zixi asked as soon as Max reached her.
Max stared at her and shrugged. “I don’t know. You’ll find out soon enough.”
“You don’t know?” Zixi said softly, her expression showing anger.
“I mean, I can win against all of them,” Max coughed and rephrased his answer after seeing her expression change. ‘I don’t want another lecture from her,’ he thought quietly.
“Don’t worry, Zixi. You know Max—he’d never do anything he isn’t confident about,” William said on Max’s behalf.
“See? He even has more confidence in me than you do,” Max said, his expression shifting as if surprised that William trusted him over Zixi.
Zixi ignored William and stared at Max. “You’d better show some strength.”
Max nodded confidently. “It’ll be a walk in the park.”
Zixi nodded and walked toward the middle-aged man who stood some distance away from her. He had a well-built body with short brown hair and a beard. He wore a professional black suit with a tie and appeared very solemn as he observed everything happening in the hall.
Max followed behind Zixi and stood beside her.
General Zane Foster turned to his daughter, then to Max. A hint of disappointment flashed in his eyes as he saw Max’s strength at level 6.
“You are Max Morgan?” he asked, his voice full of authority.
Max nodded.
“I will give you a chance since I made a promise to Zixi, but don’t expect anything more than that,” General Foster said, his tone expressing disappointment.
