Chapter 49: A Chance is all I need
Max raised his brows at the General’s tone but nodded. “A chance is all I need.”
“Hmm.” General Foster stared deeply at Max before turning his attention back to the five geniuses standing in the arena.
“Sorry about that,” Zixi whispered in his ear. “He’s probably very disappointed to see your strength at level 6.”
Max glanced at her and whispered, “Don’t worry. Let’s see how things proceed.”
Zixi nodded with a sigh.
Honestly, Max didn’t care about anything as long as he was given a chance. If General Foster could give him that chance, he could only be grateful, regardless of his attitude.
“Alright, now listen, you five,” General Foster said loudly, his voice reaching almost everyone in the hall.
The five geniuses gathered at the center of the arena turned to General Foster with curious expressions. They thought the selection had already ended and that they were the chosen ones since only five from Crestford City were allowed to participate in the recruitment test for the Phoenix Order guild.
“Like every year, there will be one chosen person from my general’s quarters who will compete with you five for one of the spots,” General Foster said.
The five of them were shocked, their expressions turning serious. They had heard rumors that someone from the general’s quarters would participate with the final contestants every year for one of the spots, but it was just a rumor, and they hadn’t thought much of it.
What they did know, however, was that one of them would have to go home if the contestant from the general’s quarters defeated them.
Just then, Max stepped forward and appeared in the arena, catching everyone’s attention.
“Hmm?” General Foster frowned, seeing his actions. He hadn’t even announced his name yet, and yet he dared to step forward before the five chosen. ‘Interesting… Let’s see what this kid has planned.’ Curious, he wanted to see what Max would do here.
He firmly believed Max couldn’t win against any of them with his level 6 strength and would try some tricks to defeat them, which is why he was curious about his actions.
Zixi, on the other hand, sighed in relief seeing Max’s confidence as he walked toward the five chosen. ‘It seems I was worried for nothing,’ she thought silently.
As far as she could recall, she had never seen Max lose to anyone whenever he challenged someone in the academy.
Although this was different from the academy, the basics were still the same. It all depended on one’s strength.
“Look, who is that kid?”
“Hmm? Could he be the candidate from the general’s quarters?”
“I don’t think so. Look at his strength; he’s only at level 6. He’s too pitiful.”
“But why is he walking toward the other five?”
“Damn, I don’t know.”
The crowd in the hall also noticed Max walking toward the five chosen, but it made them more confused than anything else. They couldn’t understand why Max, with level 6 strength, would approach them unless he was the candidate from the general’s quarters.
“I am Max Morgan from the general’s quarters,” Max introduced himself to the five and said directly. “Now, who wants to fight me?”
The five of them froze, stunned by Max’s words. Not only they, but everyone gathered in the hall was shocked.
Although they had some suspicions that Max might be the candidate from the general’s quarters, his strength told them a different story. They simply couldn’t believe that someone with level 6 strength would compete with the geniuses of level 10 strength.
The entire notion of it seemed impossible.
“What? None of you dare to fight me?” Max taunted them when he saw they were just staring at him.
“Heh.” Someone sneered loudly at that moment.
Max saw that it was the young man with dark violet hair down to his shoulders. His droopy eyes looked at Max with an arrogant expression on his face. He was Tim Drake.

“Someone at level 6 dares to challenge us?” He chuckled, his expression dark as he pointed his index finger at Max. “Just one move… I’ll need just one move to kill you.”
“One move, you say?” Max smiled in amusement and said, “Alright, let’s see if your so-called one move is enough for me.”
“Wait for me, let me teach this retard a lesson for a moment,” Tim said, chuckling to the other four as he prepared to fight.
However, before they could fight, General Foster appeared before them and said, “This round will be held in the Battle Realm.”
“Battle Realm!” All five of the geniuses’ eyes shone with excitement as they heard the words.
Why did they want to enter top guilds like the Phoenix Order? Aside from getting more dungeon-related tasks, it was due to the availability of a Battle Realm. Every genius in the world dreamed of competing in the Battle Realm. It was the ultimate stage for a hunter to showcase their skills.
‘Battle Realm…’ Max also became a little excited. He knew he would enter the Battle Realm sooner or later with his strength, but he never expected he’d enter this early.
“I want you kids to go all out for this round. Use your full strength,” General Foster said, smiling. “But keep in mind that you will be fighting in my private sector, not the public sector.”
The five of them nodded. They didn’t care about which sector they would be fighting in—they were just excited to enter the Battle Realm for the first time.
Just at that moment, the entire hall seemed to tremble slightly before everyone was shocked to see a gigantic black cube with various colors flashing inside, slowly descending onto the arena.
Everyone was surprised by the size of this cube, but they felt even more awe. It wasn’t every day they would get to see a Battle Cube with their own eyes.
‘So this is the cube from where everyone enters the Battle Realm,’ Max mused. He had heard of this thing many times, but like many, it was also his first time seeing one.
“Now, you kids enter the Battle Realm with the cube,” General Foster said once everyone calmed down. “Aside from Max and Tim’s battle, which is already fixed, your battles will be randomized.”
The five kids and Max nodded to General Foster.
“Let’s go,” Max said, smiling at Tim and entering through one of the faces of the black cube.
“Humph, I want to see your smirking face after I defeat you inside,” Tim sneered as he followed behind Max.
A moment later, the other four also entered through the cube and found themselves in the Battle Realm.
But the scene in front of them wasn’t what they had imagined the Battle Realm to be.
They appeared in a dark space where there seemed to be literally nothing. But just at that moment, three shining blue rectangular doors, like portals, appeared before them, each with something written at the top.
Soon, the world around them began to take shape as they found themselves in the middle of an empty hall. Aside from the three shiny doors, there was a big screen that appeared to be completely off. There wasn’t much else in the room, except that it seemed to be made up of squared tiles in red and orange colors.
Max Morgan vs. Tim Drake, Eren Volfire vs. Thomas Wells, Lyra Dusckshade vs. Anna Hails were the words written above each shiny door.
“I’ve heard that private spaces need Battle Coins to manage, and from the looks of the room, it’s obvious General Foster neglected the surroundings to save on Battle Coins,” Tim Drake said, looking around before turning to Max.
“Let’s go and teach you a lesson,” he sneered at him as he entered through the shiny blue door where their names were written and disappeared before their eyes.
“All the best to you four,” Max smiled and gave a thumbs up to the other four before he also entered through the shiny blue door.
