Chapter 53: Old Lake City
Max stood in the alley, gazing deeply at the Mirror Crystal. “What have you left for me?” he muttered softly, wondering what could be so important that she didn’t send him a direct message but instead contacted him this way.
Tapping his holowatch, Max accessed the extranet and began searching for information about Mirror Crystals. A number of pages appeared, detailing its uses and properties.
Max skimmed through them, quickly understanding how these crystals worked.
“So, a Mirror Crystal is locked by blood…” Max muttered, finding this particularly interesting. From what the hooded figure had told him about the Mirror Crystal, its security was incredibly strong, meaning that if someone didn’t have the same type of blood, they shouldn’t be able to access whatever was recorded inside.
‘Let’s see if it works,’ Max thought, pulling out his sword and pricking his palm with it.
A small cut appeared on his palm, and blood began to flow out. Max allowed the blood to fall onto the Mirror Crystal.
The crystal began to glow with a white hue, and then, suddenly, it projected a small figure onto its surface.
At the sight of the figure, Max’s eyes softened, and he clenched his fists. The figure was his sister, but he could also tell it was just a recorded projection of her.
“Maxy, if you’re hearing this, it means I have disappeared, just like Mom and Dad.”
Tears began to stream down Max’s face as he heard her voice. He had missed it for years.
“I’m sorry, Maxy. I had to leave.”
“Why?” Max asked, his voice hoarse, choking on his tears.
“You must be wondering what was so important that I had to leave you, right? A while back, I found traces of our parents.”
Max’s eyes widened in shock.
“But when I traced the location, I realized it was far more complicated than I ever expected. You see, Maxy, Mom and Dad didn’t leave us… They were taken away by someone.”
Max’s face contorted in rage, but he continued to listen intently.
“When I discovered this, I unintentionally made many enemies.”
Max closed his eyes, processing her words.
“Maxy, wherever I am right now, I am safe, but I’m not sure about you. So, let me give you some advice. You could trust the Thorne Family blindly, but they are very stubborn. You’ll have to win their trust first before they’ll help you with anything.”
Max understood.
“Also, you may have now realized that our surname isn’t Morgan, but Voidwalker. However, I still suggest you use Morgan for now. Using the surname Voidwalker will only bring you more harm than anything… I learned that the hard way.”
Max nodded. He had been cautious about using Voidwalker as his surname, and now it seemed his caution had been well-placed.
“I guess that’s it for now, and I know you want to find me, but forget it. Just know that I’m safe, and so are our parents. But I also know you’ll try to find me anyway, so best of luck to you, hehe.”
With that, the projection of his sister stopped, and the Mirror Crystal ceased glowing.
Max stood in silence for a moment, contemplating her words. A smile slowly spread across his face as he processed everything she had said.
‘She’s safe, and so are Mom and Dad,’ Max thought, his face radiating joy. For the past two years, he had imagined the worst, dreamed of what-ifs, and speculated many scenarios. But now, knowing the truth—that she was fine—he felt as if something that had been constricting his heart was finally released.
‘But why did she say that Mom and Dad are fine when they were taken away?’ he wondered, though for now, he didn’t dwell on it. Since his sister had said they were fine, he would trust that they were.
‘It seems there’s more to this than she mentioned,’ Max pondered. He understood that some things were complicated, and the situation with his family and parents was likely one of those things.
‘Anyway, now that I know they’re okay… I’m feeling great,’ Max thought, a joyful smile on his face as he walked out of the alleyway and sat down on a bench, waiting for the train.
Soon, the train arrived, and Max boarded.

‘Thorne Family…’ he thought, recalling what his sister had said about them as he waited for the train to arrive in Old Lake City.
‘She told me they could be trusted, but to win their trust, I have to show them my talent and strength…’ Max wondered how he could do that. He couldn’t just march up to the Thorne Family and defeat everyone in the Novice Rank, could he?
‘That would certainly showcase my awesome combat power,’ Max mused.
As he pondered these things, time passed, and several hours later, he arrived at Old Lake City.
Max exited the station and walked through the city streets, marveling at how unique the city looked compared to others.
Old Lake City resembled a village, surrounded by trees and green plains. It was rare to see tall skyscrapers or high-tech buildings here. Instead, wooden houses and thatched rooftops dotted the landscape.
‘This city gives off a great vibe,’ Max thought as he walked along the streets. He noticed many people riding beasts instead of driving cars.
‘Where could I find a hotel here?’ he wondered, scanning his surroundings. He decided to first locate the Phoenix Order guild and then find a hotel nearby.
Max took out his hoverboard, placed it on the ground, and it began to float. He jumped on and sped off, searching for the Phoenix Order guild.
After asking a few people on the street, Max was directed to the guild’s branch in Old Lake City. It was situated near a lake, which Max assumed was the Old Lake.
‘This is the only infrastructure in the city that seems normal,’ Max mused as he noticed the high-tech buildings of the Phoenix Order guild, a stark contrast to the rest of the city’s structures.
He also noticed many young men and women like him scouting the guild, with plenty of people milling around.
‘I should look for a hotel,’ Max thought, and soon found one just down the street from the Phoenix Order guild.
After booking a flat with a bedroom, a bathroom, and a training room, Max made his way to the training area. Apparently, every place on the Valora continent provided a training room, regardless of whether or not it was requested.
Max checked the other rooms briefly before heading straight into the training room.
‘It’s time I start leveling up my Magic Sword Bullets skill,’ Max thought as he entered the Dimension of Time and began his training.
