Chapter 56: 56. You are disqualified
Max heard them and smiled wryly, shaking his head lightly. Even he hadn’t expected to have such low ranks for his affinity with fire.
‘I guess a high skill level doesn’t mean much except for combat power,’ he thought depressingly as he began walking toward where everyone else stood after testing.
But he hadn’t gone far when someone blocked his path. It was Ryan, the supervisor of the recruitment test.
“You are disqualified,” Ryan said directly.
“What?” Max froze. He couldn’t believe what he had just heard.
‘No, I have to do something,’ Max thought as he looked at Ryan, using the Flame Creation skill. Immediately, flames burst forth from his hands, their intensity so high that it caused people to sweat.
Ryan’s eyes went wide with shock as he sensed the temperature and strength of the flames burning in Max’s hands. “A flame elemental skill at level 10, or is it level 20?!” he exclaimed in shock. He couldn’t believe that a fifteen-year-old kid could have such a high-level skill, especially after recently learning it.
Everyone else in the crowd was shocked when they heard Ryan. Their mouths hung open in disbelief. They understood that to have such a high level of mastery over a skill, one would need to have a very high rank class and, on top of that, possess a very high affinity for the element of the skill they were practicing.
Even then, increasing skill levels would happen at a very low rate unless one had special privileges, yet the growth would still be faster than the average person.
Max smiled embarrassingly at the stunned expressions of the crowd and Ryan, saying, “Actually, the skill is only at level 5, but since my class is flame-oriented, it increases the intensity of my flame-related skills, boosting their overall strength.”
“I see,” Ryan said in understanding and turned toward a certain direction.
Max frowned as he noticed this and also looked in that direction but didn’t see anyone.
“Just let him pass this test. We’ll know if he lied in the second test,” a voice said from behind Max, causing him to spin around quickly.
It was then that Max saw the speaker: a middle-aged man with red hair combed back. Half his face appeared to have burn marks, and a serious expression was constantly etched on his face.
“As you say, Master,” Ryan said respectfully before turning to Max. “Go and stand with the others.”
Max nodded and walked over to the group of successful candidates, but he noticed that they were giving him strange looks.
‘Underestimate… underestimate me more…’ Max sneered inwardly as he stood silently with the group.
Then, he suddenly noticed that the man with the scar on his face, who had been standing in front of them, was nowhere to be seen.
After his little stunt, the test continued for another hour or so before it finally ended.
Although nobody surpassed high rank in affinity except for Lyra, almost everyone had passed the first test.
“Alright, the first test is over. Follow me for the second test,” Ryan said loudly as he headed toward a certain direction.
The young men and women who passed the first test followed silently behind him, under the watchful eyes of the bald man and the heavily built man.
They were led to a large coliseum of sorts. Upon entering, they noticed that the coliseum resembled a stadium, with hundreds of people seated around it. At the center, there was a large, empty area for battle.
“This is where your second test will take place,” Ryan said, looking at everyone. “Though I must warn you, there’s a chance you might die inside.”
The young men and women took a deep breath and nodded. They had already expected this, but even so, they dared to participate because they were willing to take the risk just to enter the Phoenix Order guild.
Seeing no one back out, Ryan continued, “The rules are simple. Once you enter the arena, 100 monsters of level 10 will spawn. Your task is to kill as many as you can.”
Everyone nodded in understanding, their faces solemn. They understood that this was the most important part of the test. If they didn’t perform well here, they would fail and miss the chance to join the guild.
“Uh, what is the highest number of monsters anyone has killed here?” Just then, someone asked an audacious question.
Everyone turned their heads and saw that it was none other than the silver-haired kid with level 6 strength and the lowest fire affinity.
“Look at this idiot asking questions as if he wants to break that record.”

“I wonder why he even bothers to take part in the test with such low strength.”
“Maybe he thought if he’s lucky, he’ll get a chance here.”
The young hunters sneered and mocked Max for his question. They thought he was a fool who didn’t know his own strength and was just trying his luck.
However, Max didn’t pay attention to anyone and just stared at Ryan for answers.
Ryan sighed upon seeing Max’s look and said, “It was a long time ago, around three years ago, I guess. There was a genius called Freya Voidwalker who killed a total of 91 monsters before she teleported out.”
Max’s eyes went wide when he heard this. He was stunned and astonished. He hadn’t expected that his sister held the record for the highest number of kills in this test.
Everyone else was also shocked by the number “91.” It wasn’t a low number, and hearing that someone before them had reached that amount meant her strength must have been overwhelmingly powerful.
“What? Shocked?” Ryan chuckled upon seeing Max and everyone else’s astonished expressions.
He smiled and continued, “The passing number is 20. If you kill 20 or more monsters, you’ll pass the test. But if you manage to kill 50 or more, you’re guaranteed to enter the Phoenix Order guild.”
Everyone’s breath quickened at Ryan’s words. Although they had heard about the 20-kill requirement, their minds focused on what he said afterward: reaching 50 kills or more would guarantee their place in the guild, which made them excited.
Seeing their excited faces, Ryan said solemnly, “Reaching 50 kills is tempting, but believe me, when you’re pushing yourself to the limits, surrounded by tens of monsters lunging at you, you’re risking your life. You’re dancing on the edge of life and death. One mistake, and you’ll be devoured by the monsters.”
Everyone swallowed hard. They knew the risk, but very few would be satisfied with only 20 kills, knowing that, although they passed the second, they hadn’t truly passed in the recruitment test.
They knew many of them would be eliminated when the final results came out. Their journey would end before it even started. Such was the fate of those who failed, and chances were that almost half of the young hunters gathered here would meet such a fate.
