Chapter 57: Cruel
“Alright, the rules of the test are simple,” Ryan said loudly. “Once your name is called, you will be teleported into the arena. You will have one minute to prepare, after which a total of one hundred level 10 monsters will spawn in the arena. Also you can’t use cores to refill your mana.”
He looked directly at them and added, “Your task is to kill as many as you can, and when you are done, simply say the word ‘OUT.’ You will then be teleported out of the arena.”
The bald-headed man once again pulled out the list from his holowatch and began calling names one by one.
“Lyra Dusckshade,” he said, looking at the young hunters. “The names will be called in the order of the level of affinity.”
At that moment, Lyra disappeared from among them and appeared in the arena with a flash of white light.
A counter appeared above her head, counting down to one minute.
‘Will you also hide your strength here?’ Max wondered as he watched the violet-haired girl in the arena.
Everyone held their breath as the minute quickly passed.
Swish! Swish! Swish!…
Monsters began to appear in the arena one by one, and they weren’t just one type of monster; they came in different varieties. Not a single one resembled another, making each of them distinct.
Lyra sprang into action immediately. She held two moon-like discs in her hands and threw them at the monsters as soon as they spawned in front of her.
Chak! Chak! Chak!
Her two discs sliced through one monster after another, cutting them into pieces. The two discs cut down a total of nine monsters before their energy ran out and they disappeared.
‘She used the moment when the monsters first spawned to strike them… It was the only time they were at their weakest,’ Max assessed the situation and continued to observe.
After the nine monsters were slain, the remaining monsters became alert and lunged toward Lyra. Seeing this, Lyra clapped her hands together, causing them to burn with violet flames.
She quickly split her palms apart, revealing ten moon-like discs burning with violet flames between her hands.
Just as the monsters were about to reach her, she spread her arms wide, and the ten discs scattered in all directions.
The horde of monsters charged at her from every direction, a frenzy of claws, fangs, and guttural roars. But before they could close in, the ten violet-flame-covered discs spun into action, unleashing devastation like a storm of death.
The first disc struck a leaping wolf-like beast, tearing through its chest. Violet flames erupted from the wound, consuming the creature as it collapsed with a dying howl.
Another disc arced upward, severing the neck of a towering troll in a clean slice. Its head hit the ground with a heavy thud, flames swiftly engulfing the lifeless body.
Two more discs moved in perfect harmony, weaving through the chaos like serpents. One tore through a charging boar-like beast, its armored hide offering no resistance as it was sliced clean in half.
The other carved a wide arc, cutting down three goblins in a single fluid motion. Their bodies disintegrated into ash before their screams could even escape.
An enormous ogre roared, swinging a crude club in a desperate attempt to fight back. But one of the discs intercepted, shattering the weapon with ease before burying itself deep in the ogre’s chest. Violet flames spread instantly, reducing the hulking creature to smoldering ruins.
The remaining discs whirled through the arena like sentient blades, striking down anything in their path. Limbs and torsos were severed with merciless precision, leaving trails of violet fire in their wake.
Within moments, the arena was reduced to a scene of utter carnage. Scattered monster corpses burned as the flames devoured what little remained, crackling ominously in the still air.
However, the ten discs were limited by their mana, and after some minutes of carnage, the violet flames disappeared, leaving only the discs. Though the discs alone managed to kill a few more monsters, they too vanished shortly after.
At this point, Lyra Dusckshade could be seen panting, taking deep breaths. She had used up all her mana for that attack, leaving her with nothing.
Seeing that many monsters remained, she bit her lip and softly said, “Out.”
With that word, she disappeared from the arena, leaving behind the corpses of monsters scattered around.
Lyra appeared before the bald-headed man, who nodded at her in admiration. “Good job. You managed to kill a total of 63 monsters.”

“63?” Everyone was shocked. They had been racking their brains trying to reach ten kills, and here someone had easily surpassed sixty.
Their mouths hung open in disbelief. They had witnessed the battle with their own eyes and seen how effectively she had killed so many monsters, yet they found it hard to believe she had killed over sixty.
‘She’s strong, but is that her full strength?’ Max eyed her calmly and wondered.
“Next, Vance Kins.” The bald-headed man called another man, who soon found himself standing in the arena, but the arena was now clean.
A clock appeared above his head, ticking down for one minute.
Vance remained calm as he took out a set of two small swords.
As the countdown reached zero, the monsters began to spawn one by one.
Vance began killing as soon as the monsters appeared, and a few minutes later, he said the word “Out” and disappeared from the arena.
“Vance Kins, 41 kills,” the bald-headed man announced.
After that, many names were called by the bald-headed man one by one as they participated in the test. However, not everyone managed to teleport out in one piece.
Some had lost arms and legs, some were heavily injured, and others didn’t even make it out, becoming nothing more than food for the monsters.
It was cruel to watch, but it was also a lesson for the young hunters: never overestimate yourself in a dungeon, or you would surely die, and possibly bring down your entire team with you.
Max sighed as he saw them getting killed, but he understood. If he hadn’t awakened an SSS rank class, he would have been in their shoes, fighting to the end to kill as many monsters as possible.
‘Sometimes, one’s circumstances matter too much,’ Max thought, feeling a little heavy in his heart. He wondered if some of those who had died just now had similar circumstances to his, where they had no choice but to join the Phoenix Order guild no matter what.
He sighed shaking his head from these depressed thought and focus on the arena.
One by one, the young hunters were teleported to the arena to fight and return. Some came back safely while some were injured but nobody died after some were eaten cruelly by the monsters. They understood their lessons became cautious.
Time passed slowly as all the young hunters took the test, all but one.
The bald-headed man looked at Max with pity and said, “It’s your turn.”
“Wait, wait, don’t teleport me yet!” Max shouted just as the bald-headed man turned toward him.
The other young hunters weren’t in the mood to sneer or mock him after what they had experienced, but they still smiled slightly at Max making a fool of himself.
