Chapter 109: Lost more than she gained
Ari glanced at Mister Fletcher who was standing in front of her and blocked the only escape route. The cogs in her head were turning, but no matter how hard she tried to come up with a plan, Ari couldn’t come up with anything. After all, she was not a witch. She couldn’t vanish an envelope that was placed deep in the bottom of the bag with so many clothes on top.
“Mister Fletcher, this bag only has a few pieces of clothing and nothing else,” Ari pretended to be calm even though her heart was beating loudly in her chest. She couldn’t believe that the situation turned around so soon, at that moment, Ari couldn’t help but question whether it was her luck that was too bad or the luck of these goons was shining today.
Mister Fletcher, however, did not believe so. He was a man who had dealt with all sorts of smarty-pants. Who would step out of the house with so many clothes packed in a bag with groceries on top? There was certainly something fishy.
In fact, Mister Fletcher would not have thought too much, but with Ariel instilling the fact that Ari was not trustworthy, he couldn’t help but doubt the woman in front of him. Once the seed of doubt was instilled in someone’s mind, especially if that person was as suspicious as Mister Fletcher—— it was impossible for anyone to make him trust them.
“Take the bag,” he refused to listen to whatever Ari had to say and ordered the goon next to him.
The goon with a buzz cut nodded and then walked over to Ari whose eyes widened. She took several steps back and said, “Stop or else I will scream. This is against the law! I told you that I will pay you on the 15th of the month so why don’t you let me off!?”
“Sure go ahead, scream as hard as you can,” Mister Fletcher rolled his eyes and stated with a cold voice, “This city is run by people like us. Do you think anyone would dare to fight against us?”
This was the cruel truth. Commoners feared people like Mister Fletcher, who did dirty dealings every day. Killing someone and burying the body was not anything new for Mister Fletcher and his goons.
Ari had heard about a family who met a tragic end because of goons like these. The head of the family was a teacher, and he made the mistake of saving a girl who was about to be sold. In the end, the gang members ruined the lives of the family members of that man.
The matter escalated to the point where the man was killed in an accident.
Though many suspected that it was done by the thugs, no one had any evidence to prove it. And the wife of that man, had the two children to care for, learning from the experience of her husband, she did not file a complaint.
Only then did the matter stop.
A feeling of helplessness washed over Ari, she could not understand what she had done to face situations like these.
The goon continued approaching her while she continued to step back. However, Ari’s back soon hit the end of the alley, and she gasped, while the goon stretched out his hand and snatched the bag that was on her shoulder.
“No!” Ari cried as she held on to the fabric of the cloth bag, however, no matter how much she struggled. She was not a match for the goon.
The goon stretched out a hand and pushed her on the ground, Ari who had never eaten her fill even when she was in the Nelson family, ended up stumbling back.
Her eyes were filled with despair as the man took the bag walked over to where Mister Fletcher stood and turned it upside down.
With the bag turned over, the clothes inside of it fell on the ground one by one. Among the cloth was a white envelope that was thick and stood out like a sore thumb.
“Ooh, what is this?” Mister Fletcher drawled as he reached his hand forward and picked up the envelope. Ari wanted to stop him but just as she stood up, a sharp pain shot through her ankle and she flinched.
Her gaze shot to the large red bump on her ankle, but she still forced herself to stand on her feet. She said to Mister Fletcher, “This is the money that I owe to someone else, please leave it untouched. I need to pay it back today, no matter what.”
She looked vulnerable as she pleaded with the goons in front of her. But Mister Fletcher was not one who would be moved by a few tears of a woman.
He counted the stack of money cleanly and when his count stopped at one million, his eyes lit up. Without paying attention to what Ari said to him, he pocketed the stack of money.
Seeing this, Ari’s eyes widened. She hobbled forward and said, “Did you not hear me? That money belongs to someone else! You will get me in trouble if you pocket this money.”
Mister Fletcher, on the other hand, believed that Ari was lying. Most probably she was trying to make a run for it after pocketing this money, thought Mister Fletcher proudly.
He was glad that he caught this woman before she ran away, or else, he would have lost everything!
“Miss Ari, my job is to get money from you. I don’t care how I get it,” Mister Fletcher stated coldly with a smile on his face. “If this money belongs to someone else then it’s your problem how you are going to return this money to your other debtor. For me, the only thing that matters is money, I got my hands on it. I am keeping it.”
“You will get me killed!” Ari shrieked with panic. This money did not belong to just anyone but Nicolai De Luca! She even told him that she was going to return his money. Now what was she supposed to tell him?
