Chapter 141: A Treacherous Repayment
“Do you want tea or coffee?” Ariel asked with a small smile on her lips. She skimmed through the menu while waiting for Ariana to speak.
“Nothing. Just tell me what you want to tell me,” Ariana did not wish to stay next to Ariel and sip on coffee or tea. This woman was the reason her life was in this mess, how could she have the patience to sit down and spend time with Ariel as if everything were fine?
Ariel closed the menu and placed it on the table. She did not glance at Ariana instead she turned and called for a server.
“A cold coffee for me and a cappuccino for her,” just like always Ariel made a choice for Ariana without caring for what she wanted. “And oh, make sure to add a small fruit cake for me.”
“Sure mam,” the server jotted down everything on the notepad and then walked away. He glanced at Ariel and turned to look at Ariana, his eyes couldn’t help but widen when he saw Ariana.
‘Isn’t this Ariel Harlow, the upcoming actress? Why is it that her sister is much more good-looking than her?’ The server couldn’t help but question inwardly. Compared to Ariel, her sister should have been given the chance to act.
The server, however, kept his doubts to himself as he walked away.
Once he was gone, Ariel turned to look at Ariana and sighed. She said, “I understand that you are upset and angry with me. But there is no need for you to raise your hackles against me like this? No matter what we are still sisters. I am your elder sister, Ariana. A bit more respect is what I deserve, I don’t think I am asking for too much?”
“Don’t you feel embarrassed saying such words? An elder sister doesn’t snatch things from her younger sister. She doesn’t take credit for things that she never did nor does she try her best to ruin her younger sister’s marriage,” Ariana hissed in a low voice. “You want me to treat you with respect? Then act like a respectful person first and not like a thief.”
Ariel’s expression twisted slightly, but when she remembered where she was, she immediately suppressed her displeasure. With her well-manicured nails tapping on the surface of the table, Ariel sighed.
“There is no need to bring up the past issues. You and I know that there is no point in discussing them any further——”
“Or more like you are too much of a coward to speak the dirty truth?” Ariana offered helpfully, causing Ariel to purse her lips.
She said, “Even if I tell the truth, nothing is going to change. Do you think that Noah would fall for you? If he was going to fall for you, then he would have done that in the past three years. Just accept it, Ari, no matter whether Noah knows the truth or not, you are nothing to him.”
Ariana’s heart was pricked by a needle, but she did not say anything. Instead, she turned to the server who was walking to their table with a nervous look on his face.
Coming back to their table, the server placed the two cups of coffee in front of the two sisters. He also placed a small fruit cake next to Ariel before saying, “Miss Ariel, can I take a picture with you? I promise I will not disturb you anymore after that.”
“Sure why not?” Ariel was annoyed inwardly, but she still smiled at the server and stated, “I am here because of fans like you, how can I say no?”
She then leaned close to the server, whose face was alight with excitement. He immediately clicked a picture with Ariel before turning to leave. He continued thanking her as he walked away.
As the server disappeared behind the counter, Ariel turned to look at Ariana. She curled her lips and stated, “Look, Ariana. I am not here to fight with you, I know that you are in trouble and I have a way out for you.”
She picked up her purse and then rummaged inside it before pulling out a card and pushing it towards Ariana. She said, “This organization is an NGO. It helps women like you who have no one and no proper education. You can go there and volunteer for work, maybe you will be able to pay the debt back in a few years. I mean compared to the job in the café this is much better right?”
The NGO that Ariel spoke of was run by the Serpents. Once Ariana entered that place, it would remain to be seen whether she would be able to come out or not.
Ariana looked at the card and then scoffed. “I thought you were going to hand me money, but instead you are asking me to work harder? I shouldn’t have expected anything from you.”
“I can’t offer you money, Ari. Try to understand,” Ariel sounded as if she was speaking to a troublesome, stubborn brat. “I have a reputation to keep, and owning a debt will not look good. What’s more, I don’t have so much money and Aaron is just a small construction worker. Do you expect him to deal with the debt?”
“Anyway, this is what you owe dad. If not for your birth and your bad luck he wouldn’t have lost his job and wouldn’t be buried in debt. It’s your existence that put a strain on our family, so is it wrong to pay it back?”
Though Ariel knew that it was Ari’s existence that helped her family, the habits of blaming Ariana for everything were thoroughly embedded in her bones. She couldn’t change it, even after knowing the truth.
What’s more, she knew that this was the only way Ari would listen to her.
She crossed her arms and stated with an air of haughtiness, “Anyway, I am being kind and generous here by giving you a way out, you should be thanking me instead of blaming me. Consider this as a repayment for letting me take the credit of saving Noah.”
