Chapter 142: The push and pull
Her expectations from her family were low but damn —— what the hell?
Ari looked at her sister who seemed to be proud of her words and was speechless. Introducing her to a job, was enough for Ariel to repay the millions of projects she had won.
Was she an idiot? Or was she treating Ari as an idiot?
Ariana did not know, and she did not want to know either. She had hardly ever kept any hope towards her family after they snatched her hard work and handed it to Ariel with all the benefits attached and still treated her as if she were undeserving of how a normal person was treated.
However, she let them decide the course of her life because there was once when she made a selfish choice, and it ended up with the loss of someone’s life. Ever since then Ariana was scared to make up her mind as she was afraid that she might harm someone else, it gave her mother and Ariel enough freedom to make decisions for her.
But now ——
“Are you glad that your sister is looking out for you? This is what sisterhood is about Ariana,” Ariel said in a voice which was thick with emotion. “You can keep blaming me, but I will always treat you with kindness. I know that I have wronged you in some places, but life is all about compromises.”
Ariana smiled. She shook her head and pushed the card back to Ariel. It wasn’t clear to her why Ariel was suddenly pushing her to take a job in this NGO, but Ariel’s solicitous attitude made Ariana nervous.
Sisterhood? They never once had anything like that.
“I am grateful but no need. I already have a job,” Ariana refused. She stood up from the chair without taking a sip from her coffee and quickly made her way to where the door of the café was, she would rather not stay behind and listen to Ariel talking about their non-existent sisterhood. Especially when Ariana knew how Ariel had treated her in the past.
Once she walked out of the café, Ariel chased after her. With her pointed stilettos, she walked on the cobblestone pavement and called from behind, “Are you talking about the shameless job that Nicolai De Luca offered you? Come on, Ariana. You are better than that, how can you agree to sell your body to a thug?”
Her words put a halt to Ariana’s pace. She turned and looked at Ariel before questioning coldly, “And who told you that I am selling my body? In your eyes, this is all I can do?”
Ariel scoffed when she heard Ariana’s angry tone. Ariel thought that her younger sister was angry at her because she had stepped on her tail. She crossed her arms in front as a gust of wind fluttered past them cousin Ariel’s rosy hair fluttering behind her waist.
She tucked a strand of her hair behind her ear and mockingly said, “Pugh-lease, Ari. You haven’t finished your medical training, and it has been three years since you last touched a book on medical information. Other than making coffee and washing dirty dishes, what else do you know currently?” Ariel shook her head with a sardonic expression.
“Do you want to tell me that Nicolai De Luca was impressed by your coffee-making skills and offered you a job as his personal barista?” Ariel scorned. She glanced at Ariana who was dressed in a lacy, embroidered top with a denim jacket and jeans that clung to her legs and bottom firmly, it did not show an inch of skin, but it left little to imagination.
Unlike her, Ariana was blessed with a figure that men liked, which Ariel envied.
In the past Ariana tried to mimic her style which did not suit her but now ——
“Other than your body, what else can you use to attract the attention of Nicolai De Luca?” Ariel arched a brow. She then continued speaking without giving Ariana a chance to speak, “Do us all a favour and listen to me. If you take such a shameless course of action, then you are not the only one who will lose her reputation. Our family will be affected as well, so heed my advice and just take a job at the NGO.”
Her tone was as derisive as it could have been.
Ariana stared at her sister who was speaking nonsense without an ounce of evidence, but she did not lose her temper. She tugged her jacket close and stated, “Why do you care? Even if I chose a shameless way to pay back the debt, it’s you and your family who pushed me into making the decision.”
“And how much the NGO can even pay me? Never mind.” She added when Ariel opened her mouth, “No matter how much they can pay me, I am afraid that they cannot pay half of what Mister De Luca is paying me. So save your breath, elder sister. Since you are not paying a dime of the debt, let your little sister pay it as she likes. The least you can do is to not poke your nose in my matters.”
With that, she walked past Ariel, but before she could take two more steps, Ariel caught her by her arm and turned her around.
“Are you being for real?” Ariel never thought that she would hear such words from Ariana. It made her feel angry and panicked. The control she had on Ariana seemed to be losing effect and Ariel couldn’t help but feel terrified. Why didn’t Ariana listen to her anymore?
She should have agreed when she asked her to go to the NGO, where Ariana would be pushed to the bed of that old man.
“I am being for real,” Ariana deadpanned as she flung Ariel’s hand off her. She looked straight at her sister and questioned, “Why? What’s the problem?”
“You can’t be serious Ari,” Ariel tried to suppress her panic and quibbled with Ariana, “I mean, how can you stoop so low?”
Instead of answering, Ariana stared at her elder sister. Her gaze made Ariel shuffle her feet in discomfort. A second later she heard Ariana say, “You don’t want me to pay the debt back right?”
