Chapter 143: Slipping control
Ariel felt her heart skip a beat upon hearing those words. However, she continued to smile on the surface while pretending as if she had no idea what Ari was talking about. She tilted her head to the side and questioned, “Whatever do you mean?” She scoffed before chortling. “Why wouldn’t I want you to repay the debt? Of course, I want you to pay it back, isn’t that the reason I even sought employment for you?” She then turned serious as the smile left her lips.
“You are being ungrateful, Ariana,” Ariel said to Ari. Her eyes filled with disappointment.
That gaze made Ari clench her fingers. When she was young, Ariel had looked at her in this same manner and Ari had lowered her head again and again in front of Ariel and her mother.
‘Don’t be a disappointment, Ariana.’
‘I did not expect such a thing from you, Ariana.’
‘Can you stop being a burden, Ariana?’
‘You are so ungrateful!’
Every damn time, she tried to decide for herself that her family did not like—— Ariel and their mother had stopped her.
“I am not being ungrateful. I am being wise, Ariel,” Ari clenched her trembling fingers as she turned her gaze over Ariel’s shoulders such that she did not have to look her in the eyes. “You have never done anything good for me, the only time you were kind to me was when you needed something. Most probably, there is some benefit related to you, if not you wouldn’t have tried so hard to convince me.”
Now Ariana was a bit regretful for pushing the card back without taking a look at it. If she had known Ariel was planning something, she would have remembered the name of the NGO and strayed clear from it no matter what.
Ariel pursed her lips. She felt her heartbeat quicken, but a second later Ariel calmed down. Even if Ariana was suspicious, there was no evidence in her hands.
Coming out of her thoughts, Ariel stepped forward and stared at the obnoxious expression on Ari’s face. She wanted to drag Ariana with her and wished to throw her inside the NGO, but rationally she knew that it was not possible.
“I just did not want you to do something shameful,” Ariel stated in a cold voice with her chin raised arrogantly. “No matter what, you are still my sister and the ex-wife of Noah. If you were to sell your body, we would also lose our reputation. But if that is what you want to do, then go ahead! See if anyone cares?”
Ari stared at Ariel. She tried to gauge something out of Ariel’s eyes and actions, but her sister’s expression was calm and natural. Like she had no hidden intentions in her heart. Ari, however, did not believe it.
“No one has cared for me since I was born, so there is no need to throw such words,” Ari’s voice had the same coldness as Ariel’s. “However, I hope that you truly have no designs against me. Because if you do, then just remember, Ariel… I was the one who brought you where you are. I can drag you down as well, so don’t think about pushing me into a corner where I might take some drastic measures.”
With that, she turned around and walked away with the flip of her hair.
Ariel watched her leave with her jaw clenched tightly. Her fingers were digging in her palms, and Ariel was biting her bottom lip. She couldn’t believe what just happened.
“She actually threatened me?” Ariel gasped disbelieving. In the past, all she needed was to gaslight Ariana and the latter would lower her head obediently. But now!
Her venomous gaze fell on the woman who had walked away. “It seems like after leaving the house, her confidence had grown.” However, this was not good news for Ariel or Madam Harlow.
If Ari escaped the palm of their hands, then how would they hand her to Serpents?
“This cannot be allowed!” Ariel stomped her heels on the cobblestone path. She threw her hands down like a child before throwing her head back and groaning. She covered her face and moaned, “If I had known this would happen, I would have never let that woman leave our house!”
Dropping her hands to the side, Ariel fished her phone and dialled a number.
Ariana was getting out of control, she couldn’t allow Noah to escape as well!
On the other side, Noah was sitting in his office. He was listening to the report of the design department while looking at the blueprint of the building.
“I have taken note of the condition of the land, Mister Nelson,” said the man while looking at the stack of papers in his hands. “The land where Mister Adam wants to build his hotel is prone to landslides. I believe that instead of focusing on the designs and aesthetic, we need to pay more attention to the beams and the protective measures.”
“The more firm is the layout, the more durable will be the——”
The words of the man were interrupted when the ringing of a phone echoed in the room. Noah, who was staring at the printed report, raised his head and reprimanded, “Did I not tell you all to switch your phone down when we are in a meeting?”
Brandon cleared his throat, before leaning down until he was on ear level with Noah and whispered, “It’s your phone, Mister Nelson.”
Noah frowned as he turned to look at Brandon before fishing his phone out from the pocket of his coat and sure enough, it was his phone that was ringing.
He was used to Ari not calling him during office hours and long forgot that he had divorced Ariana. Now Ariel was the one who was next to him, and she called him at any moment.

Though he was annoyed, he still answered the call.
“Hello, Ariel?” He hardly greeted Ariel when the sound of her sobbing came from the other side.
