Chapter 145: The Lack of dignity
Unlike Ariel, who was bent on making trouble in her life, Ariana did not bother with what happened in the morning. She changed her clothes after she returned home, she smelled of dust and trash having thrown the trash bags at the dump yard.
As for what happened with Ariel, she threw it in the back of her head and continued with her day.
“Good work, Ari,” Leila praised as she looked at the new worker. Though this young girl was hired just a few days ago, Ariana had taught her quite patiently. Now Alyssa could deal with customers as well as brew coffee without mistaking the sugar and cream ratio.
“It is what I should do,” said Ari as she wiped the counter. She was no longer going to work in the café and was going to start her internship at the hospital. Before leaving, she needed to train her junior well, lest her sudden resignation caused trouble for Leila who had helped her a lot when she needed it.
Ari was not an ungrateful woman who would do something as shameful as stranding someone who helped her.
Leila smiled upon hearing her words. She raised her hand and ruffled Ari’s hair, before saying, “I am going to miss you. You are like a little sister to me, having you here surely brought joy to our usual life.”
“Stop being so emotional, Leila,” Stella tried to keep her face straight. However, her red eyes gave her feelings away. “You will make us all cry.”
“True, and my mascara is one hundred fifty dollars, I cannot afford to cry today,” Trey stated as he stared at the ceiling with his fingers under his waterline. “I am going to be pissed if it gets ruined.”
Ari smiled upon seeing their antics. She reached forward and hugged the two of them.
“Stop being so cheesy,” she said with her arms looped around their shoulders. “I am not leaving the city. The hospital where I work is only a few blocks away, I can always come to look for you all.”
“You don’t understand, girl,” Trey waved his hand. His eyes were still teary but at least he was no longer on the verge of crying. “You are one of us, and yet now you are going to make your dreams come true. I always thought that people like us were only destined to work odd jobs to make our end meets. Watching you walk down the path of becoming a doctor is making me so freaking proud.”
“It’s like I am sending my daughter off to college.”
Just like Ari, Trey was a dropout because his parents did not approve of him. They even tried to forcefully match him to a woman, which was why he escaped from the house and couldn’t finish his studies. In the past, Trey believed that he wouldn’t amount to anything, but after seeing Ari get back on her feet, Trey seemed to have realized that there was no such thing as a right time.
So what if he was in his late twenties? He could still pick himself up.
“That’s right,” Stella clasped her hands as she pulled away. She took Ari’s hands in hers and stated, “You have given us confidence to chase our dreams, Ari. Just you wait! I will become a fantastic engineer!”
“And I will start with my fashion designing again!”
The two of them cheered one another while praising Ari whose face turned red in embarrassment. She never thought that she could ever inspire someone.
“Ari,” Leila called Ari who turned and looked at her.
The woman motioned her to follow her to the corner, where Leila took out a pair of keys.
“These are my old bike keys,” Leila knew that Ari divorced Noah without taking anything with her. As someone who cared for Ari, she wanted to help her a bit more.
Ari’s eyes were fixed on the keys. No one had treated her this kindly in the past, she thought to herself.
“I cannot take this,” she said to Leila in a low voice.
“I know that you have your pride, and I am not trying to embarrass you,” Leila spoke in a slow, tentative voice. She then said, “I used to drive this bike when I was ….” She paused and Ari noticed the hesitation in her eyes before she continued, “I was studying in the college. It’s an old bike and I have no use for it as I only have bad memories of it. I was going to throw it away anyway, but then I recalled that you don’t have a bike.”
As she spoke, she handed the keys to Ariana before the latter could refuse her.
Ari’s vision turned blurry. Compared to Ariel, Leila had been a much better and supportive elder sister, despite the two of them having no relationship with one another, Leila had always looked out for Ari.
Not being able to put her feelings into words, Ariana reached out and hugged Leila tightly. Leila didn’t anticipate this, her eyes widened for a few seconds before her expression turned normal. She patted Ariana on the back and said to her, “Live a happy life, Ariana. This time make sure not to lose yourself for a man. They are seriously not worth it.”
Her soft eyes turned hard when she saw the said ‘unworthy’ man walk inside the café.
“I need to go and check up on the quality of the coffee that was delivered,” said Leila as she kissed Ari on the cheek and walked away after a soft pat at Ari’s cheek.
Ryan, who saw her walk away, slowed down his pace. He understood that even if he caught Leila, she wouldn’t listen to what he had to say to her.
His heart dropped back to the pit from where it had jumped up earlier upon seeing Leila.

“Damn it! How long are you going to do this?” He cursed in a low voice before turning to look at Ari. She was wiping her tears and seemed quite emotional.
Seeing her like this, Ryan could not help but tease her, “What’s wrong? Did you realize that even stripping off your clothes will lead you nowhere?”
