Chapter 161: Words that makes heart skip a beat
Nicolai cleared his throat. He then turned to look at Ariana and questioned, “Why haven’t you been answering my messages?”
He had been messaging Ariana on her number, like a goddamn pest that he was.
However, Ariana did not answer any of those.
His messages were nothing vulgar. Okay, there was a hint of something more than wanting to be friends, but he never went too far with her.
They were along the lines of ——
Hi, it’s me.
Nico, in case the name that I saved on your phone wasn’t enough for you to recognize me.
Want to hang out with me tonight?
Come on. We can be like friends.
Okay, I would love to be more than that, but it wouldn’t work since you are so irksome and standoffish.
Would you like a drink?
A nu*e? Will that break the ice? I look f*cking amazing without my clothes.
Ah, Pallas. It’s so cold inside your inbox. It’s like the Sahara desert. No one texts you, do they?
And in the morning, he had sent another text which was ignored as well.
Yup, that’s how his one-sided crush had been going on until now. He was like a moth and Ariana was like a fire, despite all that cold attitude of hers, he was trying to get close to her every freaking day.
‘At this rate, my member is going to rust,’ Nicolai thought. Since he couldn’t do it with anyone else, he was pondering whether he should try running for nirvana. Maybe it wasn’t too late?
Who was he kidding? The devil would burst into tears if he went to heaven. He had booked the VIP ticket to hell, alright.
“I do reply to you, Mister De Luca,” Ari was not lying. She did respond to Nicolai, it’s just that her responses were dependent on his texts. She would answer the serious one while leaving the rest aside.
Nicolai rolled his eyes. It would have been so much better if this woman were one of his enemies. He could have dealt with her in one way or another, but Ari wasn’t his enemy. And Nicolai had no idea how to get her to soften her stance towards him.
She was unlike those women who would lower their back and take him nice and snugly, because of his identity.
“That’s not what I call responding to my messages, Pallas. That’s like chasing an uninvited ghost——” he paused mid-sentence and looked at Ari, who was staring at him with a knowing look. Nicolai stared back at her before turning to look in the front, “You know what, Pallas? Never mind. I was only texting you because I wanted to know you better.”
“Why do you want to know me better?” Ariana asked with a light voice. She tucked the strand of her hair and stated, “I don’t think it will help you in any way.” It wasn’t as if he were to know what her favourite colour was and painted his room in that shade, she would let him bed her.
Nicolai turned to look at her with a frown on his face. He crossed his arms on his chest and remarked, “And why wouldn’t I? You are an interesting woman, Pallas. I believe finding a little about you, would be amusing.”
His words caused Ari’s heartbeat to skitter. Amusing, her?
Ari felt like laughing. She was anything but amusing. With a light laugh, she said to Nicolai, “You don’t have to lie to me like this, Mister De Luca. I know that I am boring——”
“Who says?” Nicolai interrupted her. With the sun shining behind him, the golden rays fell on his physique, lighting his eyes that shone like rubies while he looked at her sideways. “If you ask me, I have never seen a woman as interesting and fascinating as you, Pallas.”
The two of them looked at one another before Ari turned her gaze away with an embarrassed look on her face. She shyly tucked her hair behind her ear and didn’t know what to say.
This was her first time hearing a man say that she was amusing. When she was young, boys often proposed to her sister and not her. Even at the time of prom, Ari had a hard time getting a date.
‘It is because you are dull, Ari,’ her sister said to her one day while applying the lip oil to her lips. She then turned to look at Ari after checking her reflection in the mirror. ‘Men don’t like dull girls like you if I was in your shoes… I wouldn’t even try dating because no one will like a girl who only knows how to study and dress in all black like some want to be a gothic nerd.’
Even her mother would often look at her and shake her head. ‘She is such a dull girl. Doesn’t even know how to smile and please her parents, much less say some sweet words. How will she even get married or please a man? With her cold personality, I am afraid that no one would want her.’

This happened to her when she wasn’t even eighteen.
Those words burned into her soul like some flaming coal being dropped on her skin. They didn’t just burn her but left their marks on her heart.
Even now, Ari has not forgotten those words.
Sometimes she even blamed herself for being too cold. Maybe if she had been as charming and pleasing as Ariel was to the men surrounding her, she would have saved her marriage from being destroyed.
Thus, she didn’t believe Nicolai when he said that she was an interesting woman.
The two of them stayed silent and Patrick who was sitting in the driver’s seat gagged inwardly. He didn’t know that his boss was so good at flirting with women. He actually said something so cheesy.
Nicolai didn’t say anything when he saw that Ari was a bit embarrassed. He turned to look at the front, but then he suddenly recalled something, “Do you like to paint?”
