Chapter 164: Not a trouble of mine
“I didn’t take their words as heard, Nurse Mable,” Ari shook her head. She gave the elderly nurse a friendly smile and said, “In a way, they were doing their job as well. I am sure that it must be quite annoying, with women coming every day to the hospital and bringing lunch to Doctor Dimitri.”
“You are so right about that, it’s simply awful dear. Even though we have told those admirers of Doctor Aiden that he doesn’t eat anything apart from the cooking of his mother because his stomach is weak. They still do not listen to a word that we say,” Mable waved her hand in slight annoyance.
‘Ah, so he has a weak stomach. That will explain why Nicolai despite being late came to deliver the lunch to his cousin,’ Ari looked down at the lunchbox. Her heart was in turmoil as she stared at the well-insulated box in her hands. When she was in the Nelson family, every action of the members of the Nelson family was well calculated.
Forget caring about one another, Ari only saw Glynn flattering her brother when she wanted something. How many times did Noah forget his lunch or miss his breakfast? But neither Mrs. Nelson nor Glynn cared for him, even though Noah was prone to having stomach cramps if he did not eat on time.
It was she who would worry about his stomach cramps and bring lunch to him every time he missed a meal at home.
Glynn never took Noah’s condition seriously, in her words, he was a man and little cramps in his stomach wouldn’t kill him.
But Nicolai…
‘He could have ignored Aiden and his weak stomach, but he didn’t,’ Ari felt it was a bit laughable. Nicolai was rumoured to be ruthless, but he still cared for his family. At least he did not have petty schemes and calculations in his heart.
Compared to him, the Nelsons looked a bit more apathetic and cruel.
The two women walked past the bustling crowd of nurses and patients, before coming to a stop in front of an office’s door. Mable raised her hand and knocked before saying, “Doctor Aiden?” She turned to look at Ari and upon seeing her slightly confused expression, Mable said, “Doctor Aiden is busy at the moment.”
“Come in,” a muffled voice came from behind the door, and Mable smiled at Ari before pushing the beige door open.
No sooner did she push the door open, the scent of sanitiser and room cleaner along with the subtle scent of lavender wafted over to Ariana.
Along with it was a brush of cold breeze.
“You can go inside, there is something that I need to do first,” said Mable and she did seem busy, so Ari did not stop her.
Ari stepped in and found Aiden sitting behind a clean white table, and he was nodding at the laptop.
“I understand, what you are saying, but I cannot rush the process,” Aiden said to the person on the other side of the screen. “Organ transplant is a big matter, Keon. It’s not that I do not wish to help you, but the list is full at the moment. Unless another slot opens, I don’t think that I will be able to help you.”
While speaking, he turned to look at Ari and motioned her to take a seat.
Ari looked around the clean room and more or less understood Aiden’s temperament.
‘He must be obsessed with cleanliness, even the walls are painted white’ thought Ari as she sat down on the couch. Though the office was mostly empty, Ari noticed a few pots of plants sitting on the floor and on the table where Aiden was sitting.
Her train of thought was interrupted by the voice of the man who spoke suddenly, “Aiden, is there no way? Penny cannot wait for another slot to open. She fainted a few days ago, now mom is distressed that something might happen to Penny again.”
“If you want her to live a long life, then you might as well ask her to stop running amok,” stated Aiden coldly. He jotted down a few things on the notepad next to him. He tore the piece of paper and rang the bell on his table.
Three seconds later, Mable walked inside. She flashed a smile to Ari before turning to look at Aiden and took the piece of paper from him.
Even though it was a small action, Aiden and Mable seemed professional and confident. Ari, who saw the two of them, clenched her fingers determinedly.
On the other side, Keon, who was rebuked by Aiden, choked. He wanted to say something, but couldn’t. Because Aiden was right. The doctors appointed to take care of Penny long told them that Penny needed to stay at home.
“You know I cannot control her,” Keon said with a slight furrow on his brows.
“It’s not a matter of control or not, Keon,” Aiden placed the pen in his hand in the holder and turned his complete attention to the man on the screen. “I have told you that there are no empty slots at the moment. Unless your sister is an idiot, she should know and understand something so simple. If dying is not her goal, then she should take care of her health and should not lose her temper or control of her emotions.”
“I am her doctor and the surgeon responsible for her heart surgery, but I am not her nanny. If she is not careful towards her own condition, what do you expect me to do? Rob someone else who has rightfully bought the organ?”
Keon had no words. What Aiden said was indeed right, Penny fainted because she refused to listen to them and went to look for Nicolai in the Lonest City.
“She is my sister, Aiden,” Keon spoke in a pleading voice.
“She ain’t mine and if you are so heartbroken, then look for a live donor,” Aiden picked up the tumbler on the desk and sipped his coffee. “That’s the only option for you.”
