Chapter 165: Let the lessons begin
Ari’s eyes widened when she heard Aiden mention a live donor. Though she knew that Aiden was Nicolai’s cousin, she hadn’t expected him to say live donor so casually.
Aiden, however, languidly glanced at her, he did not say anything when he saw her flinch and turned his attention to the screen of his laptop.
‘Of course, a live donor might not be a big thing for him,’ Ari thought as she tried to make her presence as inconspicuous as possible. In case, she heard something that she shouldn’t Ari was worried that she might find another trouble in her hands.
“What are you talking about, Aiden?” Keon was also shocked. He shook his head and refused, “I cannot arrange for a live donor, if it was a liver or eye donation, I would have thought about it, but we are talking about the heart. How can I find a person willing to be a live donor?”
Humans had just one heart, who would be willing to give it up?
Aiden noticed the hesitation in Keon’s eyes and calmly remarked, “You are the heir of the Ashford corporation. Is finding a live donor that difficult for you?”
As he spoke, he sipped from his tumblr.
Keon noticed his leisurely appearance while he spoke.
“You know our family is neutral. We do not commit any crime,” Keon said in a heavy voice. The Ashfords were one of the neutral families that neither supported the Serpents, the Phantoms nor the other fractions of the Clover and Lonest cities.
They have relied on their strength to get to where they were at present, if the Ashford family were to ask for help from either of the fractions, the balance of the two cities would tip.
“There you have it then,” Aiden set down his tumblr and calmly stated in a voice that was neither high nor low. “Since arranging a live donor is not an option for you, I guess that means you have to wait until another slot opens up?”
Keon’s face was filled with reluctance, but since he had made his choice, there was nothing else to say to Aiden. He nodded and then ended the call.
“I hope that you will not speak of this matter to others,” Aiden turned his attention to Ari once the call ended. His lips were curled in a small smile as he said to her, “I was half joking when I suggested Mister Ashford to bring a live donor. He and his worries towards his sister can be a pain in the ass sometimes.”
“What if Mister Ashford had agreed to bring a live donor?” Ari asked with a curious note in her voice.
“Do you want to know?” Aiden asked with a smile which made Ari blink her eyes and she immediately shook her head. For some reason, she felt like it was better to not hear what the man had to say.
Seeing her refuse him so firmly, Aiden chuckled. His teasing expression eased a bit as he remarked, “Don’t worry, if Mister Ashford had agreed, then I would have refused to do the surgery. I might be many things, but I do not take human lives lightly.”
After he was done clearing the doubts in Ari’s mind, Aiden then said to her, “Bring your certificates and education degrees, Miss Ariana. I need to see whether we can proceed or not.”
Nicolai told him that Ari was smart, and her grades were remarkable when she was studying in college. But he didn’t dare to trust his cousin, who either thought with his fist or his lower body.
Ari nodded. She stood up and then rummaged in her bag before putting the file that held her certificates and degrees, along with her performance records and everything else.
With a swift flick of his wrist, Aiden pulled the file towards him. He looked at it carefully and the more he looked, the more the furrow between his brows became. He raised his head and glanced at Ari, “Can you tell me why you stopped pursuing medical training? With grades like these, you could have stood next to me in a few years.”
Aiden appreciated talents, and he could see at a glance that Ari was not only talented but skilled. Even her practical skills were ranked at the top. This was something that not many people students could achieve.
When Ari heard his words, heaved a sigh of relief. When she saw Aiden frown just now she thought that he was not satisfied with her.
She didn’t act presumptuous just because Aiden praised her.
“It can be said that it was my foolishness,” Ari smiled wryly. “I listened to what others asked me to do and didn’t think for myself. If I had, then I wouldn’t be where I am now.”
Aiden understood what Ari said more or less. Even though he didn’t know much about the Nelsons, he knew that the family held some old-school views on how the matriarch of the family should not work.
‘What stupid views and rules,’ Aiden thought with a roll of his eyes. He then said, “Your grades are wonderful, and even your skills seemed to be praised by your teachers. If you had continued with your training, then I would have taken you as my assistant than my student.”
“However, in medical practice…there is no such thing as letting go and catching. Rusted skills are, after all the most dangerous thing in medical practice,” Aiden closed the file in front of him and interlocked his fingers. “I will admit that you are worthy of learning from me but … I cannot let you take charge at once.”
“Which is why, I think you should first start with small surgeries and practices,” said Aiden. He tapped on the keyboard a few times and turned to look at Ariana. “There are few patients in the public ward. Most of them are either beggars or old men and women, who do not have any families.”
“Though I do believe that every life counts, I cannot start from the basics, that is giving you a lesson on how to perform surgeries,” Aiden continued speaking. “So, we will start from the public ward. These patients either have complaints about fractured spines or rotten wounds. Most of them need debridement, it’s not a difficult surgery, so we will proceed with them first. It will give you a chance to polish your rusted skills and these beggars will get free treatment.”
“I hope this is alright with you, Miss Ariana.”
