Chapter 168: A Persistent Woman
“How do you feel?” Aiden asked while washing his hands, he looked at Ari and raised his hands in front of him before questioning, “Do you think that you can deal with the bedsores of Mister Ledger?” He asked these questions because Ari’s complexion was unusually pale.
Even though she was standing on her feet, Aiden thought that she was close to fainting.
Ari was indeed a bit queasy but when she heard Aiden’s questions, she nodded. “I can. Please leave it to me, Doctor Aiden.”
It was her first day at the hospital, and Ari didn’t want to leave a bad impression on Aiden.
And though the memories of the past haunted her, Ari was willing to suppress those memories and move on forward, she could not just stay locked up in the past now, could she?
Noticing the determination in her eyes, he nodded. He turned to look at Kyle and said to him, “Wheel Mrs Atkinson in a different ward until her wound doesn’t heal, don’t bring her back to the common ward and have someone sanitize the room and bring Mister Ledger inside the surgery room.”
He paused and added, “And bring the medical records of Mister Ledger. Miss Ari should take a look at his medical record before performing the surgery.”
Even though it was a small surgery, Aiden wanted to make sure nothing went wrong. Because occasionally it was the small mistakes that led to big problems.
Kyle nodded as he arranged everything as per Aiden’s orders. The medical reports of the patients admitted to the public ward were neatly stacked in the room which was right next to the public ward.
Therefore, it did not take long for Kyle to return with the medical reports of Mister Ledger, which he handed to Ari.
As Ari took the report and opened it, Aiden started explaining the condition of Mister Ledger to her for her convenience, lest she misinterpreted something.
‘She had been out of the medical practice for a long time, it would be foolish to leave the matter completely in her hands,’ though Aiden had begrudgingly accepted Ari as his student, he had taken the responsibility nonetheless. Since he made his decision, he would stick to it, no matter what.
“This patient had fractured his spine and shoulder blades after a bad accident, where he fell from the roof of a house when he was working as a mason,” said Aiden while pointing to the X-ray in the file. He brushed his fingers on the broken spine that could be seen on the X-ray and continued, “This spinal treatment was delayed because no one sent him to the hospital in time. His family also refused to pay his medical bills.”
“Now his condition is beyond treatment, which means that right now all you need to do is to disinfect his bedsores and relay his condition to the dietician of the hospital for a better nutrition plan.”
Ari listened to his explanation carefully, even if she understood that she needed to clean Mister Ledger’s bedsores alone, she was willing to hear what Aiden had to say to her.
‘The surgery itself is simple, if Doctor Aiden wanted, he could have left me alone to finish this simple procedure on my own,’ thought Ari as she let Kyle cover her hair with a surgical cap followed by gloves that he polled down her wrist. ‘However, he is willing to explain everything to me patiently. Compared to my professor, he seems a bit more professional.’
Ari was reminded of her professor, who was responsible for teaching them basic surgical procedures and techniques. But he would just let the staff push the cadaver in front of the class and then leave the classroom by making excuses.
While she was lost in thoughts, the door of the surgery room was pushed open and Mister Ledger was wheeled inside.
Ari took a look at his medical report again to make sure that his condition was not life-threatening. Bedsores, itself were easier to treat, but if they were left to develop and fester, they could turn into sepsis.
“Proceed with the anaesthesia,” commanded Ari as she pulled the surgical mask on her face. She walked over to Mister Leger and carefully examined him before asking, “Does it hurt?”
“No,” Mister Ledger answered and Ari nodded.
‘Seems like the anaesthesia has kicked in,’ thought Ari as she said to the man, “Please do not worry. We are only going to disinfect your bed sores and make a small cut to drain the liquid inside of it. You will not feel any pain, with the anaesthesia working.”
“I…I understand…”
Aiden nodded upon seeing Ari speak with Mister Ledger. A doctor should gain the trust of his patient and it was important for the patient to not be scared.
Sometimes speaking with the patients helped ease their tensed muscles.
“Hand me the knife,” said Ari without looking at Kyle, who immediately handed her the scalpel.
As soon as the cold metal touched Ari’s hand, the latter felt her heart skip a beat. Ever since she was young, she wanted to hold a scalpel in her hands, there wasn’t a day when she did not imagine herself holding this in her hand and saving someone’s life.
‘I will never be as helpless as before,’ Ari clutched the scalpel in her hand. ‘I will be the writer of my own destiny, no matter what others think or say.’
Ari’s eyes flashed with determination as she heaved a breath and then began with her work.

Removing a bedsore was a simple task, all she needed to was cleanly made a slit while wiping the blood that oozed out of the wound. Once the bleeding slowed down, she drained the sore by using the tweezers.
Mister Ledger had three to four-bed sores on his back, by the time Ari was done, an hour had passed by.
Aiden watched the woman deftly clean the blood off Mister Ledger’s back and apply a clean gauge on the newly slit wound.
Though her face was pale, not once did her handshake while dealing with the blood, drainage, and wounds.
‘This woman has some great tenacity,’ Aiden praised inwardly. He noticed that Ari had some resistance towards blood, but she was a strong woman with a strong mind. Even though she feared blood, she did not fail at the sight of it.
A woman like her would achieve greater heights eventually if she persisted.
