Chapter 170: Meeting new friends
“Don’t be too surprised,” the woman who stood in front of Ari remarked. “You will be like this in no time as well. I am Sawyer Holstein, by the way,” the woman introduced herself as she held her hand in front of Ari.
“Ariana Harlow,” Ari shook hands with Sawyer whose eyes widened slightly before she snapped her fingers and said, “I heard about you, you are the new apprentice of Doctor Aiden who was stopped at the nurse station right?”
“Y-You know this already?” Ari was embarrassed. She was not in the wrong, but the matter at the nurse station was rather humiliating. If possible, she wouldn’t want anyone to know what happened.
“Don’t look so shocked, Miss Harlow. It is not a surprise that others already know about it, some doctors witnessed the quarrel taking at the nurse station earlier,” Sawyer told Ari, whose expression turned a bit complicated.
Seeing her expression change, Sawyer laughed lightly and patted her on the shoulder. “There is no need to worry. No one thinks that it’s your fault.”
“Is that right?” Of course, Ari did not trust Sawyer’s words. It was her first day at work, while the nurses had been working here for years. Would the doctors and nurses agree with her actions instead of supporting their colleagues?
Ari had once faced blatant ostracism at the hands of her classmates for a petty reason and didn’t believe that this place was any better.
“It seems like you don’t trust me?” Sawyer remarked as the two of them moved a step forward when someone left the line after getting their meal.
“I just think it’s unlikely for people to trust a stranger over those with whom they have been working for years,” replied Ari as she arrived in front of the station where clean food trays were placed, she picked one up before rummaging in the spoon holder and selecting a clean one.
“That’s indeed true, but occasionally there can be exceptions,” Sawyer offered her a smile as she continued to take a step each time someone left the line. “Like those nurses at the nurse station at the emergency department.” She then lowered her voice and whispered, “They have a curse on Doctor Aiden, and have offended numerous nurses and female doctors in the hospital.”
“And their attitude is not correct either,” she added in a hushed voice.
Ari now understood why the four nurses tried so hard to chase her. They were gatekeeping Doctor Aiden.
When the truth came to light, Ari was speechless. Though Aiden was a good man, it did not mean that every woman who got close to him was interested in him.
“Good day to you, Loraine,” Sawyer greeted the woman who was serving chicken rice.
“Good day to you too, Doctor Holstein,” Loraine greeted back. Ari glanced at the elderly woman who was smiling kindly, her curly brown hair was tucked neatly in the hair net and green eyes twinkled under the light as she scooped the rice from the large dish in front of her and placed it on Sawyer’s tray.
She then turned to look at Ari and said, “And who is this?”
“I am Ariana Harlow, Doctor Aiden’s apprentice,” Ariana introduced herself to Loraine whose face held a shocked look before she exclaimed, “Oh so he finally got an apprentice who stayed for half a day? Shall I ask Mindy to bake some sweets? It is such a miraculous day. I think we need to check if the sun has arisen from the west today.”
“Don’t joke around, Loraine. In case Doctor Aiden finds out what you have been telling his apprentice, he might come looking for you with a scalpel,” teased Sawyer.
Loraine did not seem to mind. Instead, she said, “It will do some good to that boy if he came out of his office and breathed in some air. He is so stuffy and cold-faced, I really don’t understand why those nurses like him so much.”
“They even ended up getting an overnight shift because of their lack of professionalism.”
Ari did not think it was appropriate to feel joy at the suffering of someone but when she heard that the four nurses were punished, she was secretly pleased.
She was indeed offended when those four women looked down at her just because she did not look ‘serious’ enough to be an apprentice in their eyes.
Sawyer, on the other hand, was much more expressive than Ari, who did not even smile after hearing that the nurses were punished. She laughed boisterously and said, “This is what they deserve, they always slack off and try to get a shift in the emergency room when Doctor Aiden is working. Maybe now they will learn how to maintain a professional attitude.”
She then turned to look at Ari, where she smiled at her, and she said, “Do you want to sit together with me?”
Ari agreed with a nod.
Sawyer took her to the large table where not many doctors were sitting and then ushered Ari to sit down next to her.
“I am starving,” she declared with an exaggerated sigh. “I had to stay at the neurological surgery department for three days before the higher-ups finally agreed to let the brain tumour surgery of Mister Finnegan commence.”
“Not to mention the two days of surgery, I swear to god my legs were this close to giving in,” Sawyer took a large bite of sausage placed in the tray.
Ari watched her eat and did not speak, instead, she listened to Sawyer and the things that she ——-
‘Is it okay to say these things when others are eating? What if they find it queasy?’ Ari wondered inwardly while watching the other doctors.

One of the doctors placed down his spoon causing Ari to worry that he was going to quarrel with Sawyer, but then she heard him say, “Just this? I just came out from the gastroenterology department. Do you know? The patient in ward three zero six had a shampoo bottle stuck in his bottom?”
