Chapter 171: Daily conversation of doctors
“Oh my, how did it happen, Doctor James?” Sawyer’s curiosity was piqued and so was the rest of the doctors as they stopped eating and turned to look at the doctor who just spoke.
Doctor James rolled his eyes as he bit the taco that he was eating, Ari watched the mashed beans fall from the other end onto the tray that was in front of the man.
She heard him say, “The man said that it was because he slipped and fell in his bathing room, but who knows what the truth is? Anyway, that’s not the point!” Doctor James banged his fist on the table. “The shampoo bottle got stuck in his bottom three days ago, and he came to the emergency department today!”
“I have a feeling where it is going,” said another female doctor with an amused yet disgusted expression.
“Of course, since you have faced the same situation, Doctor Amelie,” said Doctor James with a light laugh. He took a bite of his taco and continued, “So, of course, we have to take the bottle out even if the man stayed like that for three days. It was just that the man did not stop eating for the last three days in fact, he ate even more thinking that the bottle would come out if he ate a lot.”
“Oh no…” Sawyer covered her mouth with both her hands while Ari placed the spoon that she had brought to her mouth, down.
Doctor James nodded heavily. He sighed and then said, “The second we took out the bottle…it was as if we had unclogged the clogged toilet. It was simply …” he did not speak and made hand gestures. “It exploded everywhere, I just came out of the department and heard someone cry. Most probably it’s the cleaning staff.”
“I pity whoever is responsible for cleaning your department today,” Doctor Rose scrunched her nose and continued with her meal. She was eating a steak made from minced meat which wasn’t well done.
Ari noticed the hint of red in the middle of the meat patty and heard Doctor Rose say, “Why am I even sympathizing with you? Just this morning, an emergency patient was sent to my department. She met with an accident and both her legs were mangled.”
“And the woman was pregnant, you can imagine the tragic situation when I took out the dead child from her womb.”
…?
Was this how the doctors conversed every day? Ari wondered as she continued with her meal. She was hungry, and she still had some tasks in her hands, so even though she was not used to such a ‘bloody’ discussion, she still calmly continued her meal.
“You guys seem to be having fun,” a familiar voice came from behind, causing Ari and the rest of the doctors to turn and look at the person who arrived.
“Doctor Cole!” Sawyer greeted Cole with a smile on her face. She motioned for him to come and sit down at their table.
Seeing him walk over, Ari glanced at him and turned her gaze away, completely disinterested in him. But then the man sat down next to her before flashing her a smile that would have been perfect for a toothpaste ad.
“You are here too, Ari?” Cole smoothly called her. If not Ari wasn’t certain that she and him only met today, with the friendliness that Cole was showing she would have thought that they knew one another for years.
She turned to look at him, and both of them stared at one another. She said, “I suppose everyone should be at the canteen at this hour?” Her voice held a tentative and polite note.
“Of course, but I thought that since you are Aiden’s apprentice, you would hide in his office and eat your meal there,” stated Cole with a slight smile on his face. He picked up the spoon and started his meal.
Not liking how he had tried to put Aiden down, Ari said to him, “Just because Doctor Aiden likes to eat in his office, doesn’t mean that he is hiding. Some people just do not like crowded spaces.” She doesn’t like how Cole made Aiden sound like a coward.
“You don’t have to be offended by what I said, Miss Ari,” Cole offered her a can of coke as if asking her indirectly to cool down. When she didn’t take it, he shrugged his shoulders and popped the lid of the can before taking a sip himself.
“I am just saying that just because someone doesn’t come out of their personal space, it doesn’t mean that they are necessarily hiding. Doctor Aiden is a kind man, not to mention intelligent, if he is not coming to the canteen, then it means that there might be a reason for it——-”
“It seems like you got offended by my words,” Cole remarked and Ari looked away from him before rolling her eyes while trying to stay calm.
How could a man be like this, he clearly spoke condescendingly just now but in just a turn of a moment, he was acting as if he were just joking.
Ari was about to retort, but she decided to hold her tongue. Cole was an experienced doctor and from the smiles and friendly comments being passed around, she could see that Cole was popular among the staff of the hospital. There were lines that she couldn’t cross, even if she did not like the man next to her. Even if her reasons were correct, she couldn’t.
“I am not offended, Doctor Verlice,” stated Ari.
Cole’s hand shot to her hand where he caught her wrist and looked at her fingers. “It seems like you are not used to holding scalpels, Miss Ari. I will suggest that you buy a good numbing cream. Because, sooner or later, you will need it. Hands as soft as these will not get used to holding that sharp knife in a matter of a few days.”
Ari pulled her hand away and let out a soft, “Hum.”
While she was trying to avoid Cole, Ari did not know that someone was staring at her from behind like a poisonous snake bidding its time.
