Chapter 180: Chase in the dark
Somewhere else, Mrs Harlow was marching down the street with a solemn look on her face. Her lips were tightly pursed, and she seemed to be holding back plenty of words that she wanted to say to Ariana.
However, her tense muscles and quivering jaw were enough to let anyone who saw her know that she was enraged.
“That darned girl!” Mrs Harlow couldn’t stop herself from screeching after she came to the bus stop. She had the money to hire a taxi, but Mrs Harlow was too miserly.
She was the kind of woman who would rather walk a mile rather than use ten dollars for a ride.
While standing at the bus stop, she raised the clutch that she was holding in her hands to throw on the ground but paused.
With a glance at the clutch, Mrs Harlow brought it back to her chest and hugged it. It was too expensive to be thrown on the street.
Her anger was one thing, but she couldn’t dirty something so expensive and branded.
“She has always been unlikeable ever since she was born,” Mrs Harlow muttered under her breath.
The silvery glow from the streetlight next to the bus station fell on Mrs Harlow’s face and illuminated her twisted features.
Coupled with her pale foundation, she looked really terrifying.
A small child who sat on the bench of the bus stand with his mother, was frightened as he looked at Mrs Harlow.
“Mommy, there is a witch!” The boy cried as he threw himself in the arms of his mother.
His mother hugged the boy and then glanced at Mrs Harlow who stood next to them. She hurriedly apologized, “I am sorry. My child just watched a horror movie and is a bit scared.” She quickly made an excuse that sounded plausible.
Mrs Harlow opened her mouth to severely reprimand the woman, but when she turned, Mrs Harlow noticed a black car standing in an inconspicuous spot.
Her gaze swiftly landed on the number plate, and she felt her heart pause when she noticed that there was only a small serpent drawn on the white plate. A serpent that looked terrifying and dangerous even though half of the car was hidden in the shadows.
The car remained still, but slowly the window of the passenger seat rolled down, and Madam Harlow saw the mask that she couldn’t forget even in her dream.
A black stitch mask that had a neon red face drawn on it. The mask glowed in the dark, eerily—— which made the wearer look as crazy as a psychopath.
But if one were to look down, they would notice that the clothes the man was wearing were expensive.
The surrounding air was enough to make one know what kind of company he usually allowed near him.
The man turned around and looked at Mrs Harlow, even though it was impossible for her to see what kind of expression he had, Mrs Harlow felt her heartbeat skitter and her breath hitch in her throat.
“It is alright,” she said to the woman. “He is just a child.”
She then turned away and pretended as if she hadn’t seen the car. However, her hands were turning clammy and she was petrified.
With her jaw clenched, and her hands holding her clutch tightly, Mrs Harlow turned to leave.
Seeing the man who held her life in the palms of his hands, logic left Mrs Harlow’s mind and fear took over.
Her feet grew a mind of its own, and she started to walk in the direction opposite to where the car was parked. She willed herself from looking behind her and continued down the street from where she came from.
Mrs Harlow spotted the car following her through a large window of a shop and her heart shuddered.
It was really late and all the shops had shut down. More than half of the town’s population had gone back to their houses and hardly any pedestrians were left on the street.
Mrs Harlow was worried about being caught, so she deliberately followed a man carrying a suitcase in his hand.
From the cheap suit and slouched back, he looked like a daily office worker from behind. Mrs Harlow who was paying attention to the car while following the man did not notice that the man soon turned into a dark alley.
After a minute or two, Mrs Harlow realized what was going on, and she paused in her steps. The man walking in front of her was no longer walking, as he couldn’t. The two of them have reached the end of the alley inside which they were walking.

Mrs Harlow realized a second later that she had been fooled. She turned on her feet and wanted to run away but ——
The man with the neon stitch mask was standing in front of her.
The sight alone was enough to make her heart thud in her chest. She could hear her heartbeat loud and clear in her ears.
“Where do you think you are going?” The man asked with a calm voice that had an accent to it. Of course, it could be because the man was using a voice changer. “I thought that we could sit down and talk, Marcia. I am wounded at the sight of you turning your back on me.” Though he spoke kind words, his voice dripped with authority and superiority.
Mrs Harlow immediately lowered her head in front of the man. She tried to calm her heartbeat and closed her heart to gather her thoughts. She knew that she couldn’t fail here or else death was the only option left in front of her.
“Apologies, Master Roman. I had something else in my head and did not pay attention to my surroundings. If I had, then I would have certainly noticed you and stopped,” Mrs Harlow made an excuse and hoped that the man would find it believable.
If not, she would be done for.
