Chapter 226: Bold as brass
“Now,” as the three women stepped out of the De Luca mansion, Inez turned to look at Zena. “Who is this woman my son is chasing out of nowhere?” Though Aiden and Nicolai pretended not to hear her question, Inez knew that they were only trying to avoid answering the question.
Zena stiffened under the questioning of her adoptive mother. But ever since she was a child, she was taught to be respectful and loyal to the De Luca family, since Inez asked a question, Zena dared not to ignore it.
“It is Noah Nelson’s ex-wife,” Zena answered honestly. The girl stared at the marble stairs as she climbed down them one by one. ‘I am sorry Nico, but I can’t lie to Mom.’
She sent a quick apology to Nicolai, who was inside the house.
“Ex-wife?” Nadia was surprised as she turned to look at Zena, with half of her body bent forward as the three women came to a stop at the bottom of the stairs. “I thought that I had seen the worst when I saw Nico date that girl from the Morrison family. But guess he decided to lower the bar even more.”
“Nadia, just because the woman is divorced doesn’t mean that Nicolai is lowering the bar.”
“I meant to say that he is lowering the bar by going after the wife of that Nelson brat not because she is divorced,” Nadia huffed. She then turned to look at Zena before questioning in a not-so-quiet voice, “Is he already seeing that woman? That will be upsetting and thrilling.”
Zena hesitated for a while before shaking her head. She replied, “I am afraid…she is not keen to get to know Nicolai better.” Which meant that Nicolai was turned down.
“Hah!” Inez was amused upon hearing the answer. She looked at the black, low-key yet expensive car coming to a stop in front of them. “What a surprise, I thought that brat would end up giving Narcissus a run for his money.”
“No wonder he did not answer you just now,” Nadia chuckled as the driver stepped out of the car and opened the door of the car for them. “That boy must have found it embarrassing.”
“Of course, given how arrogantly he usually acts, this must have come as a shock to him. But this is good as well, at least he would learn some humility,” Inez agreed with her sister as she slid inside the car. However, as she sat down next to the window seat, she placed her hand under her chin and muttered, “What was the name of the woman again?”
Inez had never paid attention to the Nelson family, so it was not a surprise that she had no idea who was married to Noah.
“I think it was Ariana Harlow,” Nadia answered as she did recall hearing the name of the woman in a small conversation that she held with one of the socialites.
“Ariana Harlow…?” Inez curled her lips as she placed her elbow on the top of the curve of the window. “I guess the two of us need to meet. After all, I should also know what kind of enchantress she is, for her to reject my son.”
‘Is she saying this sarcastically, or is she making a causal remark?’ Zena peeked at the facial expression of her mother and just like always…she found nothing.
Damn, would she be hunted by Nicolai now?
The car drove for forty minutes before coming to a stop at the Levine family’s mansion. The driver stepped out of the car and opened the door, before coming to a stop on the side.
Inez stepped out of the car first, her black heels made a clicking sound as she stood upright. Behind her Nadia and Zena also stepped out, the three women attracted quite the attention as they walked towards the entrance.
“Arrange them from left to the right, the smallest ones should be at the front while the largest ones should be at the back,” Mrs Levine who was asking the servants to arrange the white lilies on either side of the entrance gate, turned to look behind her.
When she saw who it was, she smiled at Inez as she stepped towards the three women. “What a pleasant surprise. I was certain that you were going to turn my invitation down, Madam De Luca.”
“Your sincerity was quite genuine for me to ignore,” Inez smiled back at Mrs Levine as she answered her. With her gaze sweeping at the entrance of the mansion, Inez asked, “Did we come too early?” The servants were still arranging the decorations even though the tea party should have started an hour ago.
“Oh no, no, no!” Mrs Levine made a gesture of ‘don’t joke around,’ with her hand as she explained, “I am known for my perfection, Madam De Luca. Since the white lilies that were earlier arranged withered, I had them thrown out and replaced with the new ones.”
Inez arched a brow, she could understand wasting money on buying a gun that would ultimately save one’s life. But she couldn’t understand the logic behind buying flowers just for the sake of throwing them after they lose their beauty.
“I see,” though Inez did not understand, the topic did not interest her for her to question it any further. “Shall we then?”
“Yes, please follow me,” Mrs Levine said with a beaming smile as she turned on her heels. Inez took a glance at the high heels that the woman was wearing and hissed inwardly.
Those were some killer heels, thought Inez.
She looked at Nadia and Zena who nodded at her.
Only then did Inez turn on her feet and follow Mrs Levine inside.
“Ah, is that you Inez?” A sweet voice called from the entrance of the greenhouse, causing Inez to pause and look at the woman who stood at the threshold of the greenhouse.
A rush of sudden anger arose inside Inez’s heart as she looked at the woman who stood in front of as bold as a brass.
