Chapter 243: Shattering pieces
**************************
“So how do you feel?” Doctor Stoll questioned, who was now sitting on the plush armchair behind the wooden polished table.
“The same as usual,” replied Ariana with a calm expression, as she sat in front of him. From her peripheral view, she could see the male nurse whip his head and look at her in sheer horror. He seemed affronted over the fact that Ariana didn’t share the same anger and grief as him at the death of the dog in the movie.
Doctor Stoll chortled. He said, “There is no need for you to pay attention to Charlie. He is new and a bit too sensitive.”
“However,” he subtly added as he interlocked his fingers and placed his elbows on the tabletop. “You might have noticed it also, Doctor Harlow. Your reactions to such a tear-jerking movie were indeed flawed or if I were to use an even closer term to it, they were lacking.”
The tips of Ariana’s fingers twitched. She did notice it. The scenes that brought tears to the eyes of Doctor Stoll and Charlie evoke little to no emotions in her. No wonder her mother called her a monster, Ariana was too detached from the world and the emotions within it.
“Let me take another example,” Doctor Stoll spoke, putting a halt to her thoughts. “You told me that you caught your husband cheating, isn’t that right, Doctor Harlow?”
Bewildered slightly over the sudden change of the topic, Ariana nodded and said, “That I did.”
“How did you react to it?” Doctor Stoll inquired when he heard Ariana’s answer.
“I slapped him,” a furrow settled between Ariana’s brows as she had a nagging feeling rise in her that all the sense in this entire conversation seemed to have been dropped. “But what does that have to do with my condition?”
“It has a lot to do with your condition, Doctor Harlow,” Doctor Stoll smiled at her kindly. “Do you know the correct reaction to catching your husband cheating that too with someone close to you?”
“I——”
“You should have gone hysterical,” Doctor Stoll finished for her before Ariana could. “You should have thrown fists and kicks at your ex-husband and scratched the face of the woman who helped him cheat on you. Without an ounce of control, you should have just listened to your heart and let loose.”
“Don’t you think it’s a bit excessive?” Ariana remarked. “Not to mention that I would have been locked up for assaulting someone.”
Doctor Stoll shook his head. He tapped on his table before saying, “Doctor Harlow, I am sorry to tell you this but if there was someone else in your shoes their reaction would be leaving their cheating excessive with just one breath.”
“That less than satisfactory reaction of yours was due to this extreme desire of control of yours,” Doctor Stoll explained. “I cannot lose my temper, they will not like it. I cannot raise my voice —— or else I will be scolded, I cannot cry because no one will come to wipe my tears. These ‘cannots’ are so deeply engraved in your bones, Doctor Harlow, that you subconsciously put your emotions at the last of your list of priorities.”
“You are so used to putting the emotions, tantrums, and thoughts of others over your own, that you have no idea how to show your own.”
The man raised his head and took a look at Ariana, whose face had gone pale.
He smiled at her sympathetically before saying, “You see Doctor Harlow, while suppressing your emotions to a certain degree is indeed reasonable but if you continue suppressing them, it will result in apathy.”
“Not to mention, suppressing anything isn’t always right,” he pointed to the glass of water next to him and said to Ariana, “If we cover this glass with a thick lid and continue pouring water inside of it, what do you think will happen?”
Ariana turned her gaze to the side and glanced at the glass before answering, “It will shatter.”
“That’s right, it will shatter,” Doctor Stoll agreed with her, however, Ariana had a feeling that the man was not talking about the glass.
“So to conclude the first session, I would like it if you go back home and write ten things that you enjoy. You can write it anywhere, whether on your phone or a notebook,” Doctor Stoll said to her as he glanced at the clock. “It might be a bit troublesome, but I hope you can do it.”
“I don’t think it’s troublesome,” Ariana stated, as it seemed too easy for her.
Her words brought a smile to Doctor Stoll’s face as he said, “Excellent, then I will be waiting to hear about your happy memories, Doctor Harlow.”
Realizing that Doctor Stoll was going to get busy with his next patient, Ariana took her leave.
“Are you Doctor Harlow?” As soon as Ariana stepped out of the psychiatric ward, she ran into a man who was dressed in all black like a bodyguard.
Though confused at the sudden appearance of the man, Ariana nodded and replied, “Yes, how may I help you?”
“A patient is waiting for you at your office, please come with me and take a look at her condition,” the bodyguard said to her.
His tone made it sound like he was requesting but his stance where he stood in front of Ariana like a bull was enough to let Ariana know that it wasn’t a request.

“Let’s go,” not wanting to get into another quarrel, Ariana agreed with the man. She knew that people who came from rich backgrounds had little to no consideration for those who had no power to challenge them.
The Bodyguard did not waste another second, he turned on his feet and led Ariana to her office as if he believed that she didn’t know where her office was.
Soon, the two of them arrived at her office, where the bodyguard pushed the door open and said to the person inside,
“I brought her, Mister Sandler.”
