Ariana felt her heart skip a beat at the sweet words of Nicolai. This was the first time a man had shown positive interest in her and a genuine one at that—— her eyelashes fluttered and Ariana clenched the cup in her hand tightly.

To mask the loss of composure she changed the topic of conversation, “What are you doing here, Mister De Luca?”

“I am here to meet Millie,” Nicolai answered. He sipped his coffee, “She asked me to give her a gift her something some time ago, and I finally got it. So I came bearing it.”

As for what the gift was, he did not explain it nor did Ariana ask.

“But what are you doing here?” Ariana asked the man because where she stood and where Millie’s ward was, there was a lot of distance.

So it was quite a mystery for her as she could not understand how and why Nicolai came to this quiet corridor.

“Didn’t I just tell you that I brought coffee?” Nicolai replied as if his sudden hunt for Ariana made sense just for the sake of a cup of coffee.

Ariana blinked her eyes, her fingers squeezing the cup that was in her hands. She questioned, “You mean to say that you were looking for me throughout the hospital just because you wanted to hand me this cup of coffee?”

“Yup, is there something wrong?” Nicolai asked and Ariana shook her head before saying, “The next time …you can call me.”

“What did you say, Pallas?” Nicolai was certain that he was mishearing things because certainly, there was no way Ariana Harlow told him that he could call her at any moment.

Ariana rolled her eyes as she walked past the man, “Forget it if you did not hear me.”

“Hey! You can’t just take back what you said! Hello!” Nicolai quickly moved his feet to follow Ariana as he did not want her to change her mind.

Ariana did not bother with what Nicolai was saying, increased her pace and continued to walk where her office was, however as she walked past the door which was three doors away from her office, Ariana paused.

As for why she suddenly stopped, it was because the door of her office was pushed open and the light inside of it was turned on.

‘Didn’t I turn off the light?’ Ariana questioned inwardly. She recalled turning the light of the office off before leaving the room, how come it was suddenly turned on?

“What’s the matter?” Nicolai came to a stop beside her. “Why did you stop all of a sudden, Pallas?”

“The lights are on,” she replied and from the confusion on Nicolai’s face, it was evident that her words were not enough to answer his question. “They were not supposed to be on. I turned them on.”

Ariana closed her eyes and opened them, she was trying hard to control the panic that was surging in her heart as she told herself about all sorts of possibilities that could have happened when she was gone.

‘Maybe the cleaner or someone else came to clean the office or to take something, there are multiple reasons for the lights to be on. There is no need for you to panic, Ariana,’ she reproached herself. However, the fear she felt was evident in her eyes.

Nicolai studied her expression carefully. His eyes narrowed, and he thrust his cup of coffee into her hand before walking in front.

“Where are you going?” Ariana was surprised to see the man walk towards the office.

“You are scared, Pallas. Why are you scared ?” Nicolai did not turn around, instead, he continued to march forward in front of Ariana like an impenetrable wall.

Don’t…don’t…she was not worth this kindness, Ariana felt her emotions spiral out of control as she chased after the man.

She didn’t want Nicolai to get hurt because of her.

Nicolai, however, did not seem to be afraid of any kind of danger as he was a rather potent danger himself. He strode right inside the office, without bothering to peek.

“Mister de Luca…what…at least take a look inside before striding inside,” Ariana felt her heart jump a couple of times when she saw how careless Nicolai was acting in the face of potential danger.

‘Why does it feel like I might die of a heart attack because of this man’s careless attitude before anything else?’ Ariana questioned with a helpless expression.

But as she chased Nicolai inside the room, Ariana came to a sudden halt when she noticed a large bouquet of hyacinths sitting on top of the table.

What…how did this bouquet come here?

“Someone came prepared,” Nicolai muttered as he looked at the surveillance camera inside the room that was shattered to pieces. He stared at the sizzling hole which was smoking faintly before turning to look at the small window that was left open.

He walked over to the window and opened it, even though there were no traces left behind he could smell gunpowder.

Whoever came to this office first took care of the surveillance cameras and then placed the hyacinths on the surface of the table.

Mind you, this office belonged to Aiden and the configuration setting along with the firewall built within it was different from the surveillance camera in the hospital.

It was impossible to hack the surveillance cameras inside Aiden’s office, which meant that the person knew the layout of the hospital inside and out.

Nicolai brushed his fingers on the surface of the window pane but nothing, even the residual of the gunshot, was cleaned.

‘Smart. Whoever did this is fucking smart,’ Nicolai muttered before turning to look at Ariana who was staring at the hyacinths. No…she was staring at the small card that was stuck on top of the bouquet.

‘Why is she looking at the card with such a terrified gaze?’ Nicolai questioned as he strode to the table and snatched the card off the bouquet before Ariana could stop him, he flipped the card open.
