Chapter 248: Chasing the only lead
“What the hell is this?” Nicolai read the words written on the card again and again before turning to look at Ariana, whose face had gone pale with fright.

And seeing her like that, Nicolai couldn’t ask the many questions that were running in his head at the speed of a horse at that very moment. Who was this fucker? Since when did he start stalking Ariana? And why did she not tell him?

There were countless questions that he wished he could ask but upon seeing Ariana stand there like a child who was caught stealing, Nicolai calmed himself down.

He set the card to the side and walked over to where Ariana was standing.

“Pallas?” Nicolai softly called the woman who seemed to have lost her soul. He reached forward to hold her by her arms, but before even the tips of his fingers could touch Ariana, she turned around and dashed out of the room.

“Ariana!”

Ariana, however, did not stop upon hearing Nicolai’s call, she chased after the man whose shadow she had seen lurking around the office.

As Ariana chased after the man, she noticed that he was wearing the same clothes as the man who came to her and asked her to sign the consent form.

Mister Sandler!

Seeing someone who could provide her with a clue about this bouquet, every bit of rationality left her mind and anger took over her.

Her feet seemed to have grown a mind of their own, and she started to walk in the direction where Mister Sandler was striding away. She noticed that the man was walking rushing and his eyes were darting around like a rat that had stolen a block of cheese. Ariana sensed that something was suspicious about that man and immediately chased after him.

However, her chase was filled with obstacles as the corridors of the hospital were filled with patients, doctors, and stretchers.

Thus, it did not take long for Ariana to lose the man whom she was chasing.

As she stood in the driveway of the hospital, she could only watch helplessly as the man drove away with his people.

“Ariana!” Nicolai, who had finally caught up to the woman, reached out and held her wrist. “What are you doing?”

She ran like her life was dependent on it.

“I saw someone and——”

“And you chased him?” Nicolai was stumped with disbelief. He panted heavily as he held the woman by her arms and questioned, “Did you even think about the consequences of your actions? What if that man was armed? What if he was holding a gun? Why didn’t you ask for help?”

“Who will help me?” Ariana asked with a frown, her face marred with confusion as she looked back at him, and that was when Nicolai realized ——

It wasn’t that she did not want to ask for help or that she thought that she could take care of everything, Ariana —— believed that no one would come to her help even if she called them.

So the thought of asking for help never came to her.

‘What kind of fucked up family she had been living in?’ Nicolai could not help but question. And as he stared at the woman in his arms, he couldn’t help but wonder whether she was alright.

For some reason even though Ariana seemed normal —— even more than everyone else, something seemed off about her.

“Where is the man? Who did you chase?” Nicolai asked.

“He is gone,” Ariana replied with a sigh as she turned to look in the direction in which the car drove away. “I was chasing after him, but the man left before I could confront him.”

“Then let’s go,” Nicolai dropped his hands to the sides and turned to walk to where his car was parked.

“Go? Where to?” Ariana asked the man. He was not even chasing after Mister Sandler, so how would he know where the man was at the moment?

Nicolai turned his head such that he could look at her, without turning his body around.

Ariana then heard him say, “Will you believe me if I tell you that I have magical powers to hunt that man down?”

Of course, Ariana did not trust such a childish thing, but something about that confident glint in Nicolai’s eyes informed her that he had a way to catch that man.

And Ariana, who wanted to know the identity of the man who was stalking her, was too tempted to ignore it.

Fifteen minutes later as they pulled in front of a boisterous bar, Ariana understood that the magic Nicolai spoke of was hacking the traffic system.

Ariana had never seen such an adventurous thing before, all Nicolai needed was to pass on an order, and he was alerted about the position of Mister Sandler.

With her head tilted back, Ariana looked at the name on the board that was flashy even under sunlight —— ‘Condemned.’

Women dressed in scanty clothes accompanied men inside the place. Tall guards were standing on either side of the doors. One look at the people going inside the bar and Ariana knew what kind of place this was.

“Let’s go,” Nicolai said to her as he held out his hand to her.

There was already a line in front of the gates of the bar. Nicolai and Ariana were third in line as they watched the woman and man in front of them go inside the bar one by one.

The woman in front of Ariana was dressed in an expensive dress though it did nothing to hide her voluminous curves. She took out a couple of dollar bills and handed them to the guard before saying,

“Enjoy the ride, boys.” She did a little shimmy as she winked at the guards.

The guard did not answer as he just took the money and placed it inside his pockets.

The man next to the woman chuckled and said to her, “Stop teasing them, let’s go. I have already booked a room for us.”

The couple stepped inside the bar. Ariana could hear the booming music from the small split between the two doors.
