Chapter 253: Taking charge
“From then on I wore the scent which held tinges of hyacinths religiously like a fool,” Ariana stared in the front with her fingers clasped in her lap. Though her expression was blank, Nicolai noticed the slight tremor in her voice.
“But I don’t smell hyacinths on you anymore,” Nicolai pointed out. He did smell the scent of hyacinths on Ariana a few times, but now she smelled more like vanilla or butterscotch. On some days, she smelled of coconuts, but the scent of hyacinths was always missing.
She turned her head to the side and her lips curled up in a mocking smile. She replied, “That’s because I hate that scent now. Isn’t it funny? I married that man with hopes and dreams that I would get everything that I wanted but instead when I walked out of his life… I lost even what I held dear to me.”
“And now that this stalker is sending the bunch of hyacinths to me… I despise them even now.”
“Anyway, thank you for helping me, Mister de Luca,” Ariana mustered a smile which did not reflect in her eyes. She said, “I would have been trouble if you hadn’t helped me.” Ariana was certain that someone like Collin Sandler couldn’t have been dealt with by her.
After speaking, she stepped out of the car and Nicolai watched her leave.
“If you have lost something …doesn’t it make sense to find something else to replace what you have lost?” Nicolai muttered as he took out his phone and started tapping on it while driving away at the same time.
Inside the hospital, Ariana stepped inside the office and then changed her jacket with a white coat.
She was about to head over to the nurse station when ——
The sound of the ambulance’s siren echoed in the parking lot of the hospital followed by a burst of loud ruckus.
“What’s going on?” Ariana mused as she washed her hands clean and stepped out of the office before heading down the lobby where she found Nurse Mable and Doctor Austin, the new resident doctor.
“Doctor Harlow, you are here?” Nurse Mable greeted Ariana with a surprised expression.
“Shouldn’t I be here?” Ariana questioned with a slight tilt of her head.
“Ah, no I thought your shift was going to start around five,” Nurse Mable replied with a soft tone. She was never going to tell Ariana that she saw her leaving with Nicolai and thought that the two of them were a thing.
Thus, she was quite surprised when she saw Ariana in the hospital, as it hadn’t been more than an hour since Nicolai took her away.
‘Maybe I misunderstood their relationship, there is no way, Doctor Harlow will be interested in that bullheaded nephew of mine,’ Nurse Mable thought with a sigh and here she got happy thinking about how the future generations of Nicolai were going to be saved with at least one intelligent parent.
“It’s going to start at four,” Ariana replied as she turned and glanced at Doctor Austin whose face was pale and filled with concern. “What happened?”
“It’s a T. A patient,” Nurse Mable replied to Ariana with a worried expression. “His condition is not good.” She then turned to look at Doctor Austin and stated, “It is his first patient as a resident doctor, and by looking at his condition, I believe Doctor Austin is in no condition to save the patient. We have called for Doctor Avery, but it will take some time for him to come here.”
Ariana walked over to the stretcher where the patient was lying and as soon as the scent of blood wafted over to her nose, she stiffened.
‘It’s alright, it’s alright…’ she told herself and walked over to the patient lying on the stretcher.
Her gaze fell on the man who was no more than twenty-four years old. His rosy pink hair which matched her own was matted with blood and there were several wounds on his chest and hands.
There was a deep gash on his left cheek that was bleeding profusely.
Ariana pushed past the people who were surrounding the patient and took the reports that were handed to her as Doctor Austin was having a hard time snapping out of his daze.
She wasn’t in a good condition either but ——
‘As long as I can save one more life, then the blood on my hands might be washed clean,’ Ariana thought as she read the reports. No matter what the reason, a young boy almost lost his life because of her.
And Ariana had never felt any less guilty about it, maybe if she had dealt with his proposal a bit more delicately then the boy wouldn’t have jumped down.
“Acute subdural hematoma neurogenic shock and a ruptured spleen,” Ariana finished her diagnosis as she read the last line of the report. She turned to Doctor Austin and was about to say something when ——
“Please! Please Doctor, you have to save him,” a middle-aged man who was around the age of her father, rushed out and held Ariana by her arms. “You have to save him no matter what. If something happens to Emil, then I will be buried alongside him.”
“His consciousness is not returning!” The nurses who were trying to revive the patient spoke from the side, and the middle-aged man’s face turned even pale.

He covered his face and sobbed, “I am done for. The Ashford family will not let me off.”
Ariana stared at the terrified man and then turned her attention to Doctor Austin who was holding his hands in front of him like he was a statue.
“Doctor Austin!” Ariana couldn’t help but snap the man out of his reverie. This was not the time to be terrified!
Doctor Austin flinched under Ariana’s harsh voice, but he still looked a bit reluctant to treat Emil Ashford. There was only one reason for his hesitation, he was afraid of failing.
If he were to fail…
The man closed his eyes and said, “For now, prepare ACLS. We will wait for Doctor Avery.”
