Chapter 256: A father’s care (2)
There was a time when he had screamed and tried to explain himself, and yet, his father had not once believed him. Ever since then, Nicolai had stopped explaining himself, whether he was good or bad according to others, it didn’t concern him.
Dominic clenched the papers in his hands. He came here believing that he had the upper hand, now he was forced to back down.
“There is one more thing that I wanted to say,” Dominic spoke up as he dropped his hands to his side.
“And I am not interested in it,” Nicolai retorted as he motioned for the man to leave. But Dominic did not leave, instead, he raised his head after releasing a deep breath and said, “I heard that you are chasing after a married woman.”
Though he was unaware of the identity of the woman, Dominic knew what his son was doing these days.
Nicolai’s expression contorted. He turned on his feet faster than anyone could have expected before striding towards where Dominic stood.
He raised his arm which he pressed against Dominic’s neck and pushed him against the wall with a thud.
“You mothefu*ker, you are actually keeping tabs on me?” He growled with his chest rumbling in anger. Nicolai hated being controlled, and with Dominic monitoring his every move, Nicolai felt disgusted and uncomfortable.
He wanted nothing from this man, and he wanted Dominic to have nothing to do with him. If not for the fact that he couldn’t bleed the blood of this bastard out of his veins, he would have done it, too.
Those years, months, and nights when his mother had shed tears. When she had walked on paths where she almost became crazy —— Nicolai had not forgotten those times.
Seven years old, Nicolai had to stay awake at night because he was worried that if he slept his mother would end up jumping from the roof because she was sleepwalking.
And when she woke up, his mother would lock herself in the room refusing to eat or drink. The sounds of cries echoed inside her room as she blamed herself for not being able to keep a man next to her.
Dominic knew nothing of it. But he did —— and Nicolai would never accept this man’s interference in their lives ever again. The last time Dominic forced his way into their lives, he left a burning house in his wake, and even now, they carried its ashes.
While he smiled and laughed in his palace.
“I am doing this for you,” Dominic placed his hand on Nicolai’s arm and tried to push it away. “What’s the point of chasing after a woman who has slept with another man…cough …you might as well pick someone who will help you. I met with Miss Penelope and she is an excellent woman. She likes you too, Nico——cough ——cough, she will be an excellent match for you.”
A sneer etched on Nicolai’s lips. He said,
“Look at this mother. I told you this man loves no one but himself. Though he came here under the pretext, that he wanted to avenge his wife—— this is the actual reason for his visit.” He put more pressure on the arm that was pressed against Dominic’s neck and questioned sharply,
“What did she promise you? Money? Deals? Or a night in her bed?”
“Step back, Nico. It will be troublesome if this man dies here,” Inez said to her son when she noticed that Dominic’s face was turning purple.
Nicolai turned to look at his mother, he really wanted to kill this man here and now. However, when his mother looked at him sternly, Nicolai sighed and let go of the man.
Dominic bent double as soon as Nicolai let go of him. He placed his hand on his neck and coughed harshly at the same time he was breathing as much air as possible to fill up his lungs.
“You…do you want to kill me?” Dominic asked as he turned his head to the side and looked at Nicolai. He was his son and yet!
“I wish I could,” Nicolai sneered. “You are lucky that I cannot kill you. For now.”
“Why? I am your father, and I am doing this for you,” Dominic quibbled. He found Penelope likeable, she was a better woman than many and more importantly, she was the daughter of the Ashford family.
Compared to a woman who had slept with another man and had been divorced, Penelope was so much better. The fact that the woman had been divorced was enough to let anyone know that there was something wrong with her character and she had a flawed personality.
No man after all would break his family for no reason unless the woman was not a good one.
Inez turned to look at Dominic, she understood what the man was thinking and her expression turned solemn. She said to him, “Playing the role of a father when it feels right to you, comes effortlessly doesn’t it?”
“I am not playing the role of his father, I am his father,” Dominic straightened up. “You have ruined our son enough as it is, Inez. You lied and hid your identity from me, and I never said a word about it—— but the fact that you have turned our son into this mess is ridiculous.”
“And you think marrying the daughter of the Ashford will help him?” Inez questioned with a mocking sneer.

“Why not? She is well-mannered and respectful. She knows how to treat elders with kindness and respect, I believe if he marries her, he will learn a thing or two,” Dominic quarrelled. “Not to mention, she can help him to become a better version of himself.”
“I don’t need a woman to become anything. It might be your calling, but it is not mine,” Nicolai felt annoyed and stifled. Dominic had never been a father to him, not even once had he cared for him and now all of a sudden——he was pretending that everything was fine, that he was doing it for him.
Sick. He was sick of this hypocrisy.
‘Ah, I miss Ariana,’ Nicolai groaned as he rubbed the back of his neck, feeling a dread climb up his spine.
