Chapter 257: Have what it takes
“Thank you for finally acting like a father, even if you are acting like a shitty one. However, I do not need it,” Nicolai said to the man swiftly. He turned to his mother and said to her, “Have him dragged out of the house, if he doesn’t leave.” He then turned to look at Dominic and said, “I am not you, I do not need a demure and a pathetic damsel in distress woman just because a stronger one scares the living daylights out of me.”
“I am living then,” Nicolai told his mother.
“Alright, Nico,” Inez nodded without forcing her son, as she knew that her son knew what he wanted and desired. There was no changing his mind once he set his mind to it.
She didn’t want to force her child into a marriage which would not bring happiness to him. If Dominic hadn’t come to her office and demanded that she call Nicolai while refusing to leave, Inez would not have bothered with this matter.
However, Dominic refused to leave and threatened that he would continue badgering them if he did not get an answer to his questions.
“No, it is not okay!” Dominic could not return empty-handed after coming so far. He had finally found a solution to wipe the stain off his name. As long as Nicolai married Penelope and became the son-in-law of the Ashford family, he would be able to raise his head without being embarrassed for having a mafia lord as his son.
He said, “I have already arranged for their meeting and have given my word to Miss Penelope that Nicolai would take her to a candlelight dinner tomorrow. What would she think if she were to find out that I went back on my word?”
“Other than finding out the truth that you have no say in my life, I don’t think there would be anything that will go wrong,” Nicolai stated with a smile. “Maybe now you will learn your lesson and keep your long nose out of my business.”
“I am your father, Nicolai. I am entitled to correct the wrongs that you are making, I cannot teach you to be a proper gentleman but the least I can do is to make sure that you will have a good wife who will correct your improper ways,” it wasn’t Dominic’s fault that his wife had hidden her identity from him when they met for the first time and relayed it to him only when she got pregnant.
He couldn’t stay with a woman who had her hands covered with blood and wanted his son to become more like him. A perfect man who cared for his wife and family instead of a monster.
“Having an affair and cheating on your wife is your idea of proper ways?” Nicolai bared his teeth at the man. “And I have seen your choices, believe me, father —— they are so tacky that I want to vomit. Of course, my beautiful mother is not involved in it,” he turned to look at his mother and said, “Because she was your father’s choice and not yours.”
Inez smiled at her son while Dominic growled. He didn’t like how Nicolai was putting him subtly down.
“Nicolai,” Dominic started, with a stern look in his eyes. “You are forgetting that the decapitated head you have sent to my house is still in my hands. If you do not agree to my demands, then I will have no choice but to bring it to the police and file a complaint.”
“And you think that will be a bother to me?” Nicolai laughed. He was looking at his father as if he were staring up at an idiot who had no idea what he was talking about.
Dominic, however, was rather calm as he replied, “Of course not but if rumours were to spread that the De Luca family is behind the phantoms, I wonder how will the people react?”
The noble families of the Lonest City knew about Nicolai’s identity even if there was no evidence. They were also wise enough to not spread the rumours around and even if they did, it remained within the aristocratic circle.
But in case, Dominic was to spread the rumors to the lower half of the society, it would be a nuisance even if not a problem.
“Is that a fucking threat?” The smile fell off Nicolai’s lips slowly as a red haze filled his vision. It was one thing that this disappointing piece of human was in his home, breathing his very air.
But it was freaking ridiculous that he stood there so haughty in his boots, that he thought he could control him.
Inez peered at Nicolai and knew that something inside of him had been ticked off, but she didn’t stop her son. Whatever it was, it was Dominic’s fault for trying to get his way with Nicolai.
Misunderstood as he was, Nicolai did not lack a stern figure who could ‘correct’ him. Everything wrong for others was right to Nicolai ——- he was wired that way.
So unless Dominic could split open his head and change how Nicolai thought and perceived things, there was no point in doing such a thing.
‘His stubbornness is going to bite him in the bottom,’ Inez thought with a calm expression. But she did not stop the man, as whatever Dominic was planning had nothing to do with her and Nicolai was capable enough to leave his father speechless.
At least after this dinner was done, Dominic would never think of controlling Nicolai.
“If that’s what you want, then I shall do that,” Nicolai loved his mother enough to not cause trouble for her and Dominic knew that, which was why he was threatening the familia as a whole rather than just him.
‘Candlelight dinner eh ?’ Nicolai curled his lips up in a sarcastic smile. Let him see whether Penelope had what it took to take him out on dinner.
