Chapter 286: Dual investigation
Nicolai stared at the little girl who was covering an unconscious boy. Behind her stood a man who swung the dagger in his hands left and right, leaving bloodied scars on her delicate back.

‘Wh——what is going on!?’ Nicolai mumbled under his breath. His eyes remained fixated on the man who had stopped swinging the dagger but was now kicking the little girl on her back.

‘Enough, Rowen. What do you think you are doing?’ Just as Nicolai thought that the man was going to kill the little girl, the sound of footsteps echoed in the deserted warehouse.

Nicolai raised his head slightly from the ground and saw a man walking inside. With a blond buzz cut, he strode inside the warehouse with his giant build, with which he could have taken down a bear if that was what he wanted.

‘I told you that you can’t kill any of these kids, motherfucker!’ The man kicked Rowen in the bottom. ‘Are you itching for your head to be torn off your shoulders, eh? Is that what you want? If this girl dies, do you know the consequences?’

‘They were trying to run, Matt!’ Rowen muttered as he rubbed his bottom which was kicked harshly.

‘Then it is because you tied their hands and legs like a delicate princess, fucker,’ Matt spat on the face of the man who was quibbling with him. ‘This your first rodeo or what? We want to make a motherfucking statement, not kill a child and then bury them in the middle of the forest!’

‘Especially this girl! You might as well be prepared for punishment for touching her.’

‘The boss will be furious once he finds out you have sharpened your dagger on her back.’

Is that girl of great importance? Nicolai thought however he closed his eyes when he saw Matt pull the pink-haired girl off the young boy whose cheeks were flushed.

Most probably he was overdosed.

Nicolai didn’t know what was going on, but a second later he felt a light thump followed by a painful groan.

He, however, did not open his eyes at once and instead waited for the footsteps to disappear, only then did he turn his head and look at the little girl whose face was covered in blood and tears.

The red liquid dripped down her face and neck, as she silently sobbed.

The girl’s lips parted as she breathed through her mouth. A grim expression marred Nicolai’s features, and he said to her,

‘Are you foolish? Why did you save someone when you were so small? Did no one teach you to care for yourself first?’ He didn’t like how a girl so small tried her best to save a boy bigger than her.

The little girl, who was sniffing with silent tears falling from her eyes, raised her gaze and looked at him. She tried hard not to cry, but it was simply impossible as she was injured gravely.

‘I——I would rather not see that big brother die. He bought me a candy earlier,’ the little girl spoke in a small voice.

‘Just, for candy, you wanted to give away your life for him?!’

‘N——Nooo, I just wanted to keep him safe, my mother says that we should even hand our lives to those who give us money,’ the little girl spoke in a sobbing voice. ‘I didn’t know it would hurt so much.’

Her voice grew soft while Nicolai’s brows furrowed. What kind of batshit crazy mother this girl had?

She then turned to look at him and said, ‘You should run away. These people are dangerous, little brother.’

‘Why is he big brother, and I am little?’

‘Because you are smaller than me,’ the girl said with an obvious expression, causing Nicolai to grit his teeth and suck in a breath.

He was not small, alright!

‘I want to run away too, but they tied my legs and hands,’ Nicolai indeed planned to run out of this place at once, before meeting with his team who must have set out to look for him as soon as they got the alert notification.

However, now that the plan seemed to have failed, he had no choice but to wait for backup.

‘I can help you,’ the girl said after a short pause. She blinked her eyes and tilted her head to the side where the young boy was lying on the floor, ‘I untied big brother’s hands and legs, I can do the same for you.’

‘I do——’

Before Nicolai could say that he did not need her help, the little girl had already started untying the ropes with her teeth.

Maybe the girl was used to doing such a thing because she undid the ropes on his wrists and ankles really soon. It was as if she couldn’t feel any pain——no, how could she not feel any pain?

‘It’s done!’ The little girl exclaimed, her blackened eyes lit up as she smiled at him. ‘Now you can run away, little brother.’

‘There is no need,’ the little girl shook her head as she continued to smile even though she was breathing heavily. ‘I will be ——just a ——baggage to you,’ as she finished speaking her small form swayed, and she fell on the ground with a light thump.

This scared Nicolai so much that he wanted to help the girl, but the little one shook her head while lying on the floor as she whispered, ‘Go…’

‘I will come back for you,’ Nicolai said to the little girl before making a run for it.

Compared to the idiot who almost died and even killed the little girl along with him, Nicolai was much sharper and wiser.

Thus, he escaped from the warehouse with ease.

However, when he returned to the warehouse with his team, everything had been settled and the girl was taken away.

Returning to the present, where both Nicolai and Ariana were riding the car, Nicolai finished thinking about what happened in the past while watching Ariana doze off.

Back then, when he was searching for his little girl, he was told it was Ariel, but Nicolai did not believe it.

That girl was too arrogant to put her life at risk for someone. His little girl was too benevolent and courageous.

‘Only a fool like Noah would have confused you for that lying bitch,’ Nicolai thought as he swept Ariana’s bangs off her forehead. ‘But don’t worry. Now that I have found you… I have no desire to let you leave.’
