Chapter 294: How to be a good person
Crack.
The sound of something falling echoed in the penthouse which belonged to Keon Ashford. Penny, who was walking around the entire penthouse rummaging through this and that, now stood still in place.
“What are you doing here, Mateo?” She asked while suppressing the terror in her heart.
Mateo’s eyes lazily shifted his eyes from the mess that was scattered all over the floor, the poor couch as well as the tea table to his sister. Staring at her with his eyes which looked colder than usual, he replied,
“Were you not the one who cried and made a fuss about how you were alone and had no one to escort you to the party?”
His reply caused Penny’s lips to twitch. She only said those things to her mother to make Kaylyn feel sorry for her.
Penny craved attention as one would crave oxygen.
Thus, she said those words to hear some soothing and comforting words from her mother, while the reprimanding words directed at Keon soothed her heart.
It made her feel rather touched and happy upon hearing her mother scold Keon for leaving her alone.
That was all she wanted.
She never wanted an escort, as she was worried that her brothers would run into Ariana at the party.
Though her assistant was still investigating the matter, Penny instinctively wanted to stop the meeting between her brothers and Ariana from happening.
“I—— I did,” Penny clenched and unclenched her fingers while trying her best to smile at Mateo. “It is just that I never thought and expected that mom will send you, or that you will agree to her request.”
Among her three brothers, Mateo was the only one whose relationship was rather strained and complicated with her.
“Look at you, I took time off from my busy schedule all for the sake of escorting you, and you are looking at me with those —— leave me the fuck alone eyes. Seriously, Penny, you need to be a tad bit more respectful towards others,” remarked Mateo and Penny gritted her teeth.
“You make it sound like I am insensible and uncaring, when I am not,” Penny stated, her focus turning to her brother as she watched him stride past her mess and settle down on the couch. “I am clearly the opposite of it.”
“Only when it suits you,” Mateo smiled at her before turning his attention back to his carry bag, which he unzipped after undoing the lock.
“What is that supposed to mean?” Penny asked, feeling upset. This was what she hated, Mateo often taunted and passed derisive remarks on her, even though he knew that she was his sister.
‘If my suspicions turned out to be correct, Mateo might just kick me out of the Ashford family,’ Penny thought worriedly.
Keon and Emil were decent and gentlemanly, they would never do something as shameful and cruel as kicking her out of the Ashford family just because they were not related by blood.
Those two were kind and doltish in one way or another, but Mateo—— he was the kind of man who would squash an ant as a precautionary measure to avoid getting bitten.
If he were to know the truth, Mateo wouldn’t leave her alone.
“Never mind that. But more important than that dear sister. I brought something really useful for you from Clover City.”
” It’s a gift that might come in handy tonight, and you will need it much more than anyone else,” Mateo drawled his voice, and he raised his hand before hurling the gift in his hand at Penny.
“Be careful,” Penny thought, that it was a jewellery box and that it might break in case it were to fall on the floor.
What would she do if the priceless jewellery that Mateo brought for her from Clover City were to break?
However, as her fingers moved to open the gift wrap of the gift that Mateo gave her, she realized that it was not a jewellery box, but it was a book.
On top of the book was a title that read ——-
[How to be a good person. Ninety-nine tips and tricks.]
The excitement drained out from Penny’s eyes and her gaze hardened as she looked at the book in her hands.

“Aren’t you glad that you have such a thoughtful brother?” Mateo asked with a light chortle. “Read a few tips from the book, it might help you tonight. After all, this is not Clover City but Lonest City, we cannot have you offend someone.”
Penny clenched the book in her hands as she smiled at Mateo. She said, “If this is what you want, then I shall do as you wish, Brother Mateo. After all, it’s the thought that counts. In my eyes, I am already kind enough, but it seems like I am lacking in some way in your eyes, Brother Mateo. I shall work hard on that.”
“It is good to see that your sense of humour has gotten better from the past. This book is indeed a gift that I picked up with all my heart and soul,” stated Mateo with a light chuckle.
He then said, “Seeing how you are used to throwing insults and threats at others, allow me to explain to you something. Calling a woman ‘bitch’ just because she could get what you could not, doesn’t make you kind.”
He clicked his tongue and continued, “If it does, then show me the dictionary where it says so. We need to have some serious discussion with the publisher.”
Penny stared hard at her brother and then without a single change in her expression, she said, “Oh my brother, Mateo, you are bringing up such an old story. I am not that kind of person anymore.”
“That’s because you have turned smarter,” Mateo seemed to be praising her but at the same time, it did not feel like a praise but a taunt. “Anyway, get ready, we need to leave.”
Penny gripped the book in her hands and said with a smile, “Very well then.”
She stepped inside the room which belonged to her and when the door closed behind her, she stopped and started breathing heavily. Her hands continued to grip the little book before she hurled it at the wall, causing a few pages of that book to rip.
