Chapter 297: Flower bed fertilizer (2)
Ariana heaved a sigh of relief. For the first time in her life, she was glad for Mrs Nelson’s mania of having everything prim, proper and perfect. The three Ps almost ruined her life, but this time around they seemed to have saved her by an inch.
“Miss Harlow is no longer a member of the Nelson family. So how can she sit at the main table?” Mrs Nelson literally conjured on the spot next to Mister Adrien out of thin air.
She then turned to look at Ariana and said to her, “I am sorry about this, Miss Harlow but if you were to remarry my son only then will you be allowed to sit with our family.”
Mrs Nelson sounded pompous as she said those words, as if sitting on the main table was similar to sitting on the imaginary throne of the Lonest City.
Ariana smiled and said to Mister Adrien, “I will sit on the table closest to the main table, Grandpa. We can still talk to one another.”
Mister Adrien obviously did not agree. He wished for Ariana to sit next to him, but before he could say anything, an old friend of his walked over and dragged Mister Adrien away.
Ariana heaved a sigh of relief, she was thinking of leaving when Harrison walked over to where she was standing and said to her, “Mister Adrien asked you to stay until the cake-cutting ceremony is finished, Miss Ariana.”
‘He caught me,’ Ariana almost let out a groan. She was thinking of sneaking out of the Nelson mansion when no one was paying attention, but Mister Adrien seemed to have grasped hold of her plan.
“Do you want to sit down?” Nicolai asked when he saw Ariana pinch the bridge of her nose.
“I might as well,” Ariana glanced at Glynn whose face was distorted and appalled. She was glaring quite fervently, but it seemed like Nicolai’s presence made Glynn wary and terrified to approach Ariana.
‘Well it’s better this way,’ she turned to look at Nicolai who was built like a giant. This man wasn’t rumoured for being a mad hound for no reason, at least he was good at fending pests away.
It was just that these days, whenever she looked at him —— Nicolai resembled more like a big black dog to her than a mad hound.
The two of them made their way to the table next to the main one, ignoring Mrs Mia, who didn’t seem quite pleased with how easily the two of them had ignored her.
She narrowed her eyes before turning on her feet as she marched after Ariana.
“Miss Harlow,” Mrs Mia called out to Ariana as she reached forward to hold Ariana’s wrist but was stopped by Nicolai who raised his hand and blocked the woman’s claw.
“There is no touch, is it?” Nicolai innocently remarked when the woman glared at him.
Mrs Mia turned her focus from Nicolai to Ariana before saying, “Come with me, I have something to say to you.” Her voice was imperious as if she wished for Ariana to listen to her without questioning anything.
Ariana furrowed her brows. She took a step away from Mrs Mia before saying to her, “You can tell me what you want to say, Mrs Nelson. I am listening, there is no need to go anywhere, is it?”
“Are you refusing to oblige?” Mrs Mia asked, sounding offended and disbelieving.
“Why should I?” Ariana smiled with an exasperated expression. “I am neither your servant nor your family member.”
Mrs Mia gawked at Ariana, she had neither expected nor hoped to receive such a scathing response. She was stunned to the point where she forgot to even blink.
“Is there something else, Mrs Nelson?” When Ariana saw that the woman was neither moving nor talking, she politely called out to Mrs Nelson, not wanting to make a scene in front of everyone.
Mrs Mia snapped out of her daze, as she straightened up her spine and glared at Ariana with all her might. If looks could kill, Ariana would be buried six feet under the floor by now.
She flared her nostrils and said to Ariana, “I seem to horrendously fail to understand why in the world you would want to be with a man,” Mrs Mia turned to gaze at Nicolai and gave him a disgusted look before turning to look at Ariana again. “Like him.”
“But if this is about wanting to get Noah to beg you or something, you can forget about it. The men of the Nelson family never beg or kneel in front of anyone. It will be a tad bit wise if you return home without doing such foolish things.”
“It will make me look down on you even more.”
Nicolai arched a brow upon hearing the woman’s words. Was this the kind of woman with whom Ariana had lived for three years?
Goodness. How in the world did she stop herself from murdering this woman?
‘If it were me, I would have buried this woman in my back garden,’ thought Nicolai. She would look so pretty as his flower bed’s fertilizer.
“It seems you are misunderstanding something, Mrs Nelson,” Ariana calmly replied, making Mrs Nelson frown. “I am not doing anything to make Mister Nelson beg. Apologies are supposed to be heartfelt and not coerced. Unlike some people, I do not like apologies that are forcefully ripped out of the mouths of others.”

Her eyes flickered as a memory flashed in her mind.
‘I am sorry… I am so sorry,’ Mrs Harlow pushed Ariana’s head onto the floor. ‘My daughter is foolish so please, just forgive her Mrs Nelson. You are so great and kind, as for my foolish daughter, she can never amount to anything.’
‘Take her words as nonsense and accept her back.’
Back then how did Mrs Nelson look at her? Ariana closed her eyes and then opened them as she forcefully wrenched herself out of that memory.
She had looked at her like she was a bedraggled bitch who was left in the hands of Mrs Nelson, along with her fate, life, and death.
“You…” Mrs Mia also understood what and which incident Ariana was mentioning. Her eyes popped out of their sockets as she muttered, “Who do you think you are? Just because you have succeeded in becoming a lowly doctor, do you believe that you can counter me? I am the matriarch of the Nelson family!”
