Chapter 308: To beg
Nicolai heard the sound of doors opening and turned to look at Noah, who had trespassed in his corner. He brought two fingers to his lips and pulled out the cigar from between his lips.
A cloud of smoke left his lips and he questioned, “What is it?”
“You shouldn’t smoke in someone else’s house,” Noah said to the audacious man. “It’s not polite.”
“Let me see how many fucks I give?” Nicolai rummaged in his pockets before bringing up his hand and flashing his middle finger to Noah. “There you go? Are you happy? You should be, usually, I don’t give two flying fucks about others.”
Noah’s brows furrowed as he remarked, “You are still as rude as ever, Mister de Luca.”
“And you are just as stiff and boring, Mister Nelson. But you don’t see me complaining,” Nicolai took a swig of his cigar and released the smoke through his nostrils. “Did you come here to stop me from smoking?”
“I didn’t know that you also worked for the law enforcement department. Where do I need to submit the fine?” He leaned forward and released another tuft of smoke which floated towards Noah. “Don’t worry, I am loaded with money.”
Noah coughed as he had never been interested in smoking and had been careful to never come in contact with passive smoking as well.
When Nicolai saw Noah cough, he placed his cigar back in his mouth and took a few swigs. “You are joking, right? Don’t tell me that you have never smoked in your life?”
Noah only stared at Nicolai icily which answered his question.
“Goodness dear me, what a sin have I committed?” Nicolai taunted the man who was glaring at him. “Will the Gods ever forgive me for tainting a perfect man like you? What do you say, Preppy boy?”
He could feel a headache coming upon seeing how obnoxiously Nicolai was behaving. However, he suppressed his displeasure despite being clearly mocked by Nicolai.
‘I would rather not waste my time by entangling with the likes of him,’ Noah thought as he tugged at the tie which he was wearing around his neck.
He raised his stormy gaze and looked at Nicolai before remarking in a cold voice, “If you are worried about being punished, then I believe that smoking in the face of a man is the last thing that you need to worry about.”
“What a gentlemanly way to call me a sinful bastard,” Nicolai scoffed while taking another swig from the cigar, he released the smoke through his nostrils. “This is why I fucking hate you.”
“I do not exactly like you either, Mister de Luca,” Noah said to the man in a polite voice. He crossed his hands behind his back before saying, “However, I am not here to fight with you.”
“Oh?” Nicolai curled the side of his lips as he questioned, “That’s new. Then why did you come looking for me?”
“… To beg,” Noah had a hard time spitting those words out as he looked at the man in front of him. “I want to beg you to leave Ariana alone.”
“Excuse me?” Nicolai remarked with a frown.
Noah inhaled deeply, with a serious and straight face he said to Nicolai, “You do not need her, but I do, which is why——”
“Are you fucked up in your head?” Nicolai barked suddenly, causing Noah to stop in the middle of his speech.
“What did you say?” Noah questioned, sounding affronted.
“I asked you whether you are fucking crazy,” Nicolai threw the cigar in his hand and strode towards where Noah was standing.
He came to a stop in front of Noah, and with his gigantic build, he towered over Noah by a whole five inches.
Nicolai glared at the man, his eyes holding a dangerous gleam in them. He questioned, “Do you think that I am your little bitch? If you ask me to leave her, I will wag my tail and waddle away?”
“I just asked you to not intervene between Ariana and me, you will be fine without her but I on the other hand —— will be a mess,” Noah confessed feeling embarrassed as if he had peeled a layer off his skin.
“And?” Nicolai snickered as he leaned down until his eyes were looking at Noah’s. He raised his hand and with his forefinger, he jabbed Noah in the chest. “Well news flash preppy boy, the world doesn’t work as you want it to.”
“How many times do you think Ariana begged for you to give her what she rightfully deserved? Did you give it to her just because she begged you? No!” Nicolai showed the mirror to Noah, causing the man’s face to turn pallid.
With a sneer playing on Nicolai’s lips, he went on and added harshly, “You didn’t because you thought that you had no obligation towards Ariana. Just like that, I have no obligations towards you.”
Somewhere Noah knew in his heart what Nicolai was saying was indeed correct. If it were him in Nicolai’s place he certainly would not have agreed to let a man like him have Ariana.

Noah understood his actions were humiliating and selfish, but he dared not imagine a life without Ariana.
Especially after finding out that the woman he had been waiting for had always been the one who was next to her.
“I am willing to trade anything,” Noah ignored the bitter taste in his mouth as he offered Nicolai a chance to become the head of the Lonest City. “No matter what it is.”
Nicolai stared at the man in front of him before turning his head to the side, he let out a mocking snort before saying, “When I was sixteen, I was offered a choice. One was to either follow my cowardly father, and the other one was to stay with my mother.”
“You know what choice I made, right?” He turned to look at Noah who stared at him confused as he did not understand what Nicolai was saying to him. “You see this?” Without giving Noah a chance to question him, Nicolai pointed to the large gash on his neck.
The gash was hidden by several tattoos that were inked on his skin.
“I received this when I was seventeen,” Nicolai told Noah. “I was attacked from behind and left to bleed in an empty alley just because I picked my mother. I nearly died, but I didn’t blame anyone for that, do you know why?”
Nicolai thrust his hands into the pockets of his suit. He coolly looked down at Noah before stating in a chilling voice, “It was my decision. And what I faced were the consequences of my actions. I learned that when I was fucking seventeen, what makes you believe that you are any different?”
