Ariana, who had not expected something like this to happen, also stepped back and looked at the muscular chest as the man turned around to face her.

He didn’t have to.

Because there was no way she was going to mistake him for someone else, even if she had gone blind.

Especially when his luxurious yet damning scent of bergamot, musk, and amber filled her nostrils the second he stepped close to her.

“Morning, Pallas. I am pleased to see you at such an early hour,” Nicolai said to her as if he could not see the man standing behind him.

“I can’t say the same,”

‘What are you doing here?’

Sensing something amiss, Ariana furrowed her brows and wanted to correct herself, but Nicolai had already cottoned on to her mistake. He laughed lightly and remarked, “Does my presence unnerve you, Pallas?”

“I made a silly mistake.”

“Potato, Potahto.” He grinned down at her. The same way he had done last night when she rolled herself like a burrito in her bed.

“Ahem,” before Ariana could say anything, Cole cleared his throat from behind. The smile on Nicolai’s face disappeared as he turned on his feet and looked at the elegant Prince Charming look-alike standing behind him.

Goodness gracious. Why was Pallas so damn beautiful, he had not even dealt with that preppy boy yet and Prince Charming was ready to take charge already.

He would not let him though, he would be damned if he let this man snatch Ariana right under his nose.

“Yes?” Nicolai spoke in a sickly sweet voice.

Cole looked at the man with a matching smile which was pleasant to look at, but one could see that his eyes were nothing but two chips of ice as he looked at Nicolai.

Of course, he knew who this man was but even if Nicolai had done him no wrong, he was Aiden’s cousin which made him hostile towards him.

“It’s not polite to interrupt someone’s conversation,” Cole said to Nicolai who seemed unbothered by the lack of respect.

Nicolai crossed his arms and turned around such that he was facing the man completely. “And you know what is even more impolite?” He lowered his voice in a threatening manner, “Using someone to use as a substitute, like strapping a bandage on a bleeding wound and throwing them away once they have been stripped of their last bit of respect and dignity.”

With his nostrils turning white, Nicolai sneered. His lips curled up in a contemptuous smile as he hissed, “I have nothing against what your feud with Aiden is, that’s your shit to take care of. But this woman…she is off limits. Try to touch her, I will wrench your intestines out and make you—play skip the rope using your intestines as a skipping rope.”

His eyes flashed with murderous intent as he whispered, “Stray clear of her path from now. She is mine and not Aiden’s.”

Cole’s eyes darkened as he realized that he seemed to have made a small mistake.

“Is everything alright?” Aiden, who had returned to the hospital after his leg healed, raised his head and looked at the two men.

Nicolai licked his lower set of teeth and pushed himself off the wall against which he was leaning. He reached out and grasped Ariana’s wrist before turning to look at Aiden, “Tame your monkey.”

“I am not a monkey, Mister de Luca!” Cole snapped with his nostrils flaring. However, Nicolai was not interested in whatever he was saying.

He dragged Ariana away with him leaving Aiden to deal with Cole.

“Mister monkey, are you awake now?” Aiden questioned Cole with a polite smile on his face. “I did try to convince you many times by telling you that Doctor Harlow and I had nothing.”

Cole turned his head to look at Aiden. His expression was no longer as cordial and pleasing as it had been.

“Are you pleased about this?” He hissed at Aiden who softly chuckled.

“Indeed,” Aiden answered with a courteous yet poisonous smile. He took a step toward Cole and muttered in a low voice, “Though I hardly ever agree with Nicolai due to his boorish style of thinking. I have to admit, you are indeed acting foolishly. Do you know who you resemble now, Doctor Cole?”

Without waiting for him to reply, Aiden went ahead and said, “You resemble a seventeen-year-old teen who doesn’t even understand what is wrong or right anymore. In his rebellious phase where he wants everyone to think and act according to his mood.”

“The slightest offence would be declared as the greatest sin by children like such and you — resemble that very teen boy.”

“How long are you going to keep holding on to the past?”

Cole gave a look of pure spite and fury to Aiden before he turned on his feet and walked away, but not before bumping into Aiden.

On the other hand, Ariana was being dragged by Nicolai to a further corner of the hospital.

“Mister de Luca, there is something that I need to do,” Ariana said to Nicolai.

“Later, we need to have a little chat,” Nicolai spoke through gritted teeth. He could not understand whether Ariana was a magnet that attracted scumbags or her choice in men was simply downright horrible.

How could she even get close to someone like Cole after that preppy boy?

Cole made Noah look like a saint. Hell, he even made him look like a naive young boy who knows nothing about the world.

Once they were in a nice little corner, Nicolai turned to look at Ariana, who looked bewildered by his actions.

If she was going to choose a scumbag anyway, why not choose him? He was the lesser evil here.

“Why were you with that asshole?”

Ariana had to think twice before she could realize whom Nicolai was talking about. She furrowed her brows and replied, “He and I are colleagues, Miser de Luca. Doctor Cole was just greeting me.”

“Stay away from him,” Nicolai spoke in an asserting voice which didn’t sit well with Ariana.

“I don’t think that you are in any position to tell me what I can and cannot do.” Ariana’s tone was clipped, which snapped something inside Nicolai.

“I wasn’t until I shoved my fingers in that snug little core of yours.”
