“What did you say?” Nicolai asked as he looked at the swaying woman.

Most of the brandy in the bottle had been drowned, and Mrs Harlow was now finishing the last bit of the drink that was still left in the bottle. Upon hearing his question she let out barking laughter.

“I knew that girl would not have told you the truth,” Mrs Harlow sniggered as if she had finally gotten the hold of her enemy’s weakness. Her eyes were filled with malicious vindictiveness. “That girl is a demon. When she was young, a poor boy made the mistake of confessing his affection to her.”

“However, that girl not only did she refuse that boy, she even kicked him down a flight of stairs just because he said a few words,” Mrs Harlow continued. Every word of her was laced with malice. “It was bad enough that she did such a thing. I was ashamed to believe that she was my daughter.”

“However, three weeks later I realized just how terrible Ariana could be if she wanted— because I received a call from the school and upon arriving there, I found her beating those boys with a hockey club,” Mrs Harlow shivered at the very memory. “You wouldn’t believe it, but it was as if a demon had taken over her body.”

“When she was young, there were times when she would do just the evilest things that you cannot even think of, Mister de Luca. That girl— she is terribly sick. In every way possible.”

“Didn’t you threaten her?” Nicolai asked with a slightly raised voice as he tried to gauge Mrs Harlow’s reaction.

“Hahaha, threaten? What other choice did I have? If I had sent that girl to the Nelson house as Noah’s playmate, what if she had harmed him?” Mrs Harlow’s chuckles came to a sudden halt. “That girl — though she looks normal at times, her entire demeanour will change, and she will do things that would hurt others.”

“Just last night she tried to suffocate her sister by pushing her head in a water-filled basin.”

Mrs Harlow then raised her head and looked Nicolai in the eye, “I am her mother and I have no desire to harm her, Mister de Luca. But I cannot let you stay in the dark, my daughter, she will harm you in ways.”

“She is the devil, I tell you,” finished Mrs Harlow.

Nicolai stared at the woman for a few moments before he straightened up in his chair. He looked at the woman and questioned, “And what do you want me to do about it?”

Mrs Harlow’s eyes widened, and her expression turned agitated. She said to him, “What do you mean, mister De Luca? Did you not hear what I just said?”

“I did,” Nicolai licked his front teeth. “Funnily, enough with how loud your voice is. It is impossible for me not to hear what you have said to me.”

“Then why—”

“Because I don’t fucking care,” Nicolai raised his gaze and pinned Mrs Harlow with his harsh glare. “I am not exactly sane either, so I have no idea what you are trying to do by telling these things to me.”

Nicolai pushed himself from his chair and Mrs Harlow who was drunk followed suit. She looked at him in shock and stated, “You are making a mistake, Mister de Luca.”

“Am I?” Nicolai walked over to the door of the lounge room. With his hand resting on the doorknob, he turned to look at the woman behind him, “I don’t know whether I am making a mistake. All I know is that you left Ariana when she needed your help.”

“I am not going to do the same thing.”

He stepped out of the lounge room and turned to look at Patrick. He said to him, “Go and find out what happened to Ariana in the past.”

“Noah, listen to me at least,” Ariel chased after Noah who was heading towards his car parked in the parking lot of the Nelson Corporation.

She was dressed in a pastel pink cami dress which reached her thighs. The layered skirt fluttered as she chased after Noah in her high heels.

“Noah!”

Ariel reached forward and held her arms in front of Noah, who exhaled a heavy sigh and turned his head to the side.

“Are you so angry at me that you don’t even want to look at me now?” Ariel asked in a sobbing voice. Her amber eyes were filled with emotions as she reached forward to hold Noah, who took a step back.

Noticing that he didn’t want her to touch him, a flash of hurt glimmered in Ariel’s eyes.

“I know that you are angry—”

“Why —would I be angry at someone who has lied to me for a decade?” Noah chuckled in disbelief as he turned to look at Ariel. “You lied to me for more than fifteen years, Ariel. Fifteen, do you understand what it means?”

“I —I know that I shouldn’t have lied to you, but I had no choice!” Ariel exclaimed as she tried to explain everything to Noah. “It was my mother who wanted me to get closer to you — because Ariana, she— she is mad! She is crazy!”

“Ariel!” Noah raised his voice as he stepped close to Ariel. With his tall stature, he towered over her. “Is it not bad enough that you have stolen everything from her that you are now calling her crazy?”

“I am not lying!” Ariel spoke hotly. “We never told you, but she has once hurt a boy terribly. She nearly broke his leg! What would we have done if she had done something to you?”

She then pointed to her neck and said to Noah, “Look at this, she tried to choke me last night. I nearly lost my life in her hands, do you think that she is worthy of you?”

Noah closed his eyes and pinched the bridge of his nose. Wanting to bring Ariel from her high moral ground, he responded to her, “It was never about whether she was worthy or not. For me, she is my saviour and the girl who nearly lost her life for me.”

“Noah—”

“I beg you, Ariel,” Noah clasped his hands and held them in front of Ariel like he was praying. “The very reason I have left you alone is despite all the lies, we were once close. I cannot push all the blame on you, which is why I did not do anything to you or your career.”

“So please don’t disgust me anymore. Don’t make me hate you.”
