Chapter 347: Breakthrough
“Fuck you,” she cursed while trying to get away from him. The words, along with her denial to admit, were like aphrodisiacs to Nicolai.
“You can’t, can you?”
Her eyes widened even further when he pushed against her bosom.
Just as he was about to take a step back, Ariana released a tortured sigh, “J…Just leave me alone. Why can’t you?”
“Tell me that you want me to spend my night with that bimbo, I might do what you are asking me to do.”
A frown appeared between her willowed and arched brows, and he could see the red-hot rage that appeared behind her eyes.
She didn’t want him to go with Penelope. Interesting.
“If a bitchy, evil and vile woman like her is up to your taste, then you do what you want, Mister de Luca.”
And she was cursing Penelope.
Now for most, it might not be a big thing because they were not as smart as him. But him? He saw things much more clearly than others.
Ariana Harlow was the epitome of an elegant woman. She was all prim and proper, not to mention she would never even think of cursing anyone. She was the kind of woman who would smile at everyone despite how they vexed her.
With her elegance, she would treat those who were kind to her with a smile and ignore those who annoyed her, like she knew that she was inherently superior to them.
She also acted present with all her patients, no matter how much time it took, she would visit every single one of them. Telling every single one of them that their life mattered.
She was used to playing horse polo, one of the stupidest games that he had heard of. She loved cooking and baking, you ask her to make a midnight snack, and she would whip an entire meal for you, like a homely woman.
Ariana was also used to volunteering in the animal shelter, which was right across from the Harlow family house. She also fed stray cats and dogs and set up sites and links for their adoption.
Let him say if someone were to ring her up and say that there was an injured worm crawling on the street and needed immediate medical care, change his name if this woman doesn’t set up a fundraiser for that thing.
Stalker much? Nicolai did not think he was in fact, given what this woman had done to him, he was still restraining himself pretty well.
Anyway —
A woman like her would never call someone a bitch. She was so in control of her emotions that sometimes Ariana looked like she was not even from this world.
In the past, he used to believe that it was because of Noah but now after studying her for so long, Nicolai was certain that Ariana did not like any of those above-mentioned things.
Nope. She did them because that was expected of her as if anything apart from that would be a crime worthy of execution. Like she was raised to be a perfect wife for someone. With kindness, virtue and all that shit which was popular in the forties or something.
There were times when Ariana fought that version of herself but most of the time she would restrain herself and not break the rules that were set for her. He wasn’t saying that she did not like doing those things, she did.
But this was not her.
It was a mask that was strapped —burned on her very skin such that she wouldn’t be able to peel it off.
Ariana was repressed, confused and lost. She was struggling, but she had no idea how to climb past the abyss which she had pushed herself into by herself.
And who did it to her, they better be on their fucking guard.
But then again the fact that she loses control in his presence was such a turn-on that was simply inexplicable.
However, she was still an annoying little shit. However, at least she was not shackling herself in front of her.
At least Nicolai could see little glimpses of the real her.
Like at that moment.

“My type is a certain stuck-up prude, but she is not really showing interest in me. Makes me wonder whether I should go for something else, less teasing.”
“Then go ahead and chase after her. I never asked you to chase after me, did I? If the shoe fits, then wear it, why do you have to announce it to me?”
“Say that again, and this time say it like you mean it.” Nicolai drew close to her, he could smell the scent of room cleaner, along with her own—vanilla and coconut. This woman was such a freaking tease, what was he supposed to say?
She acted as if she had no interest in him, and yet, she wore scents smelling like a goddamn dessert, enticing him to take a lick, a bite —gobble her whole.
“Unless you cannot bring yourself to say that?”
She glared at him, and she glared hard. Like she was wishing for him to combust then and there.
There was so much rage underneath those blues but here was the thing—she did not push him, neither did she repeat those god-awful words.
Nada did not even make a move to say those things to him.
She might be reacting like she was having a hard time, but guess who was having a short supply of oxygen in his damn presence? This woman right here, people.
So if anything, Nicolai seemed to have gone through a breakthrough. Now he knew why Ariana was so fucking determined to keep him away from her.
Ariana’s mind was as clear as ever, which might be the reason she knew better than him that if she got too close to him, she would no longer be able to deny the subtle attraction she felt for him.
Such a fucking tease like he said.
