Bang!
The sound of a bullet pierced the silence. Three seconds later, screams started echoing in the parking lot.
“Call the police!”
“It’s a gunfire! I saw it from the balcony,” said a woman with relish. She seemed more excited than scared. “There were two men and one of them fired the gun.”
“Gunfire? Someone actually fired a gun in this area?”
“What about the security guard? What happened to him?”
Noah had a hard time registering the shouts, as he didn’t expect something like this to happen. With his hands rubbing the back of his head, he tried to sit up straight.
Just now when Ari had tackled him, his head bumped into something hard causing his vision to turn blurry.
“Ah! Someone is hurt!”
“There is blood! She is bleeding, quick! Call the ambulance.”
‘Bleeding? Who is bleeding?’ Noah thought as he forced his eyes to open, even though every nerve in his brain was refusing to do so.
And as soon as he opened his eyes, all the blood drained from Noah’s face.
In front of him lay a lifeless Ariana. There was a pool of blood underneath her and her eyes were closed as if —as is…
“Ariana! No…no…No!” Noah scrambled to Ari’s side.
He wanted to help her up, but as soon as he came to a stop at her side, his breathing turned ragged. The memory of his grandmother getting run over by a car flashed in front of his eyes, and Noah started hyperventilating.
Blood. So much blood.
Was she breathing? He had to make sure that she was breathing.
‘Come on,’ he gritted his teeth and chided himself.
‘Stop being such a sissy.’
His limbs started to tremble, but he still reached out to Ari.
“A—Ariana? Speak to me…cough —cough, Ari,” Noah called out to the woman lying on the floor. His breathing turned more and more rugged as his face turned white as a paper.
Fear surged in his heart, making it even more difficult for him to breathe.
“My dear, calm down,” a gentle voice said to Noah, but he could not hear anything. Everything around him had become a blur, and the surrounding air seemed to have frozen, he could not breathe.
He couldn’t breathe.
“Sa—Save her,” Noah pushed the woman who was helping him towards Ari.
“It’s alright Sonny, we have called for an ambulance,” said the woman who was helping him up from the ground.
“She…she—”
“Be at ease, sonny,” said the woman with a frown on her face. “You will be more of a burden than help with your condition. So calm down and breathe.”

She then turned to look at the man behind her and said to him, “Go and bring a paper bag. This boy is hyperventilating.”
Noah didn’t hear the response of the man, as his conscience soon faded away.
“A…Ari…Ariana…”

“Noah?”
“Noah?”
“Noah!”
Noah woke up with a gasp, with his eyes fixed on the white ceiling, he breathed in and out. For a second, he didn’t understand where he was and what he was doing lying in an unknown bed.
White-faced and scared, Brandon appeared in front of his eyes.
“Noah, are you feeling alright?” Brandon asked with a worried look on his face.
“I…” Noah frowned, his head was pounding like he had just crawled out from the stampede of raging bulls. “Where am I?”
“In the hospital,” Brandon answered promptly. He was wiping his face with a cotton handkerchief as he continued to speak, “I got a call from someone that you have fainted. It has been three hours since then.”
“I just returned after meeting your doctor, he said that you suffered from severe hyperventilation.”
Hyperventilation?
Noah’s brows furrowed even more when he heard Brandon’s words. What did he mean by severe hyperventilation—
“As for the gunshots—”
Gunshot.
Blood.
“Ariana!” Noah gasped in pain, for a second he sat up straight, his head swooned. The world tipped upside down and a surge of nausea rolled up in his throat.
“Calm down,” said Brandon while supporting Noah, who couldn’t stand straight on his feet. “She is fine, they just brought her out of the emergency room. The bullet extraction and surgery went fine.”
“See —I want to see her,” Noah said to Brandon with a dazed look on his face. He had never felt as helpless as he did after the two of them were attacked.
He pushed Brandon off himself and tried to walk to the door. But his staggering feet only carried him for three steps before he faltered again, and Brandon caught him in time before he fell face on the floor.
He should have been the one who helped Ari, but instead, he ended up shattering to bits. If anything, he added more trouble by losing control of his emotions and letting them spiral out of control.
Ariana had pushed him down to save his life, and what did he do? Faint? Goodness. Even the thought alone was enough to make him feel ashamed of himself.”
“She is still out of it,” Brandon told Noah. “Even if you go to her ward, you will only end up waiting in silence. The anaesthesia is still not going to wear off for another two hours.”
“I am still going to see her,” said Noah stubbornly, he knew that he was being foolish, that he was being simply stupid. There was nothing left for him to say to Ariana or much less fix it.
She had made it clear, but that didn’t mean that he couldn’t even silently watch over her.
If Nicolai could make Ari accept him, so could he.
He would show Ariana that he could be a better person, a better companion than Nicolai. As long as he held on, she would see through his good intentions.

BANG! BANG! BANG.
The sound of gunshots echoed in the surrounding area, causing the birds to fly away and scatter in all directions.
