Chapter 395: When it all started (2)
Roman, who was crouching under a tree, turned to look at the little girl who was peering down at him. Her rosy pink hair which appeared like a soft blush, cascaded behind her. Her bright green eyes reminded him of the lake that he had once visited when he was with his mother.
The day when he was the happiest.
She was peering down at him with a tasselled yellow umbrella with laces on its seams. ‘Why are you here, when it’s raining so hard?’
‘I am being punished,’ he answered in a gloomy voice but did not elaborate for what reason.
The little girl frowned. She said to him, ‘Your parents are being too harsh. You can catch a cold in this weather.’ Without waiting for Roman to say anything else, she pushed the umbrella from over the hedges and ignoring the stunned look on his face, she said, ‘Keep that over your head and next time try to be obedient, alright?’
After speaking, she jumped down from the top of the hedges and disappeared.
Returning to the present, Roman’s eyes flashed with a maniacal wild glint in them. He was the one who met with Kaylyn first, he had befriended and loved her first but that man — Theodore Ashford, he had snatched her away from him.
But he would not let history repeat itself. Especially not in the hands of Nicolai de Luca, whose reputation made him look like a saint.

Gasp!
Ariana awakened with a hearty gasp, her eyes were wider than usual before they returned to their usual form as she looked around her surroundings.
Finally free from the nightmares where she was trapped with Samuel and the silence of the forest, Ariana heaved a sigh of relief. She tried to push herself off the bed when a sharp sting caused her to wince and her hand slipped on the bedsheet underneath her.
“Careful,” she heard a familiar voice and her heart surged with emotions and hope.
“Nicolai,” Ari called the man whose arm was wrapped around her waist. She still couldn’t believe that he had come to save her. “You—You are here?” She muttered dumbly in a hoarse voice.
“Yes, I am,” Nicolai said to her with a grin as he helped her back down on the bed. “You better sleep some more, you have a one hundred and four Fahrenheit fever. The doctors said that you need a trip.”
“Drip, Mister de Luca. The doctors must have said drip, I don’t think with my condition I can take a trip,” Ariana corrected as she looked around her ward once again, she was soaking in the white walls and simple layout of a small television and cabinet as it gave her a sense of security.
A look of comprehension dawned on Nicolai who snapped his fingers and said, “That’s why they looked so confused when I asked which city.”
Ariana smiled. At that moment, even Nicolai’s foolish antics seemed adorable to her. The fact that he had come to look for her even though she had done nothing but push him away brought a sense of comfort to her heart.
She knew that she was not the right person for him, but Ari still tried her best to fend those thoughts aside.
“Why are you looking at me like that?” He asked while peering down at her.
“Like what ?”
“Like you have done some great wrongs towards me, and you feel guilty over it,” Nicolai remarked and Ari sucked in a breath. She turned her head to the front before shaking her head and replying, “It’s nothing.”
Nicolai studied her face for a while before leaning towards the cabinet and picking up the jar filled with water. He poured a glass of water for Ari and helped her drink it, “Take it easy, if you choke, Aiden will throw me down on the guillotine.”
Ari sipped the water slowly, not because she was worried about seeing Nicolai on the guillotine but because she truly couldn’t drink it any faster.
Once she had taken a few sips to moisten her parched throat, Nicolai helped her back on the bed.
He set the glass down on the cabinet before turning to look at her again, “How do you feel?”
“Like I was thrown in the air by a truck that crashed right into me?”
“That sounds about right,” said Nicolai, and her brows drew together. “Aiden told me that this is how you will feel once you wake up, which means you are feeling alright and are on the road to recovery.”
“By the way, what wrong did you do to that man, for him to go to such lengths to hurt you?” He questioned her.
Ari didn’t want the matter of her past to be taken out in the open once more but then again, if Nicolai wanted he could easily investigate this matter on his own as it was not a secret, he was asking her out of respect.

What’s more, Nicolai had tried to prove through his actions that he was not a threat to her. She asked, “Can you promise not to look down on me? Like I am a freak?”
Nicolai’s eyes turned humorous as he answered, “Among the two of us, I believe I am the bigger freak.”
Ari pursed her lips before releasing a sigh. She closed her eyes and clenched her fists before saying, “I attacked him and not the slapping and forgetting kind. I full-blown attacked him, with a hockey stick and whatnot. He—he had annoyed me too much back then by harassing me and I just sort of lost my temper with it.”
“You?” Nicolai questioned and Ari raised her gaze to look at him. “What is with that tone of surprise, Mister de Luca? Do you think that I never get angry?”
“No, I know that you do get angry,” Nicolai responded with a chuckle. “I just never thought that you would attack someone with a hockey stick. It’s unlike you.” He knew that she was not being honest but for the time being, he was willing to be satisfied with this alone.
He then started rising from the chair on which he was sitting and looked at the clock, “I will go and call Aiden.” As he turned around and started walking to the door, there was a loud thump behind him.
