Chapter 448: One Last Murder
Years ago,
Mrs Clamont was holding the reports of the child who had just passed away. In her left hand was a tag which was supposed to be put on the arm of the child. This tag meant that the cremation of the child was scheduled for later that evening.
‘Damn, why do I always get such unlucky jobs?’ Mrs Clamont muttered as she walked past the corridor, which was dimly lit.
She felt a bit uncomfortable as she got closer and closer to the morgue. If not for the fact that no one was going to take this job off her hands, Mrs Clamont would have shifted it to someone else.
As her promotion was right around the corner, she dared not to make any trouble.
‘I would rather not do this!’
Mrs Clamont paused when she heard a familiar agitated voice echoing through the corridor. She paused and looked behind her. However, there was no one behind her.
‘What do you mean by —you don’t want to do this?’ A grave and rough voice questioned. This voice belonged to a man whom Mrs Clamont didn’t know or recognize but she heard the woman reply, Mrs Clamont recognized the owner of the voice.
‘Nurse Harlow?’ Mrs Clamont thought with a frown on her face. A part of her wanted to turn around and leave, but her curiosity got the best of her. She slowed down her steps and came to a stop in front of the door of the morgue.
What kind of meeting was that woman having that she had to have to do in the morgue?
Mrs Clamont opened the door of the morgue and peered inside the morgue and let out an inaudible gasp as she looked at the man who stood in front of Mrs Harlow.
He was a tall man, dressed in the finest clothing and shoes, and yet, he was wearing a neon stitched mask which hid his face completely. Even his eyes were fake, as she could see that the man was wearing lenses.
‘What is she doing meeting with a man who has gone to such lengths to hide his identity?’ Mrs Clamont wondered inwardly, and at the same time, she was curious.
Curious to know what the woman was trying to do, as she and Mrs Harlow were competing for the same position.
If she could get her hands on a secret that she could use against this woman, then Mrs Clamont was certain that her promotion was certain.
Mrs Harlow glared at the man, she bit her lower lip and said to him, ‘You promised me that you would give me the finest of the riches if I were to do as you asked me. But I have not seen even a single trace of this wealth that you promised me.’
‘Nor did I see the ring. You said that you would marry me, take me away from this man who is driving me crazy every day!’ Mrs Harlow shouted at the man. ‘You lied to me, didn’t you? You wanted that wretched woman’s daughter— you just wanted to use my hands to commit another crime…AHHH!’
The rest of her words were interrupted when the man raised his hand and curled his fingers around Mrs Harlow’s neck. He pushed her on the bed inside the morgue, right next to a dead body.
Mrs Clamont gasped with her hands flying over her mouth as she watched the horrible sight in front of her. The notepad and tag in her hands were trembling as she stared at the shocking and terrifying sight in front of her.
‘You seem to have lost your nerve, Marcia, how dare you call her wretched when you are so beneath her in all ways?’ The man snarled as he choked the life out of Marcia. ‘Did you think that just because I treated you a bit nicely, you can climb on my head?’
‘Even the tiniest toenail of Kaylyn is a thousand times more beautiful and worthier than your entire existence.’ The man tightened his grip on Marcia’s neck, causing the woman to choke. ‘Do you even know how easy it will be for me to snap your neck and let you decay in this morgue? I am telling you Marcia…don’t even think of playing with me.’
‘If you do, then I will ruin your life. You have already given her drugs to induce premature birth— if you dare to back down now… I will kill you, Marcia! You promised me that girl — and I have given you much more than you can even imagine.’
‘Even if you deny it, you are here because of me. So you better bring that woman’s daughter to me,’ The man hissed in an angry voice. ‘If you betray me—’
However, he paused before turning to look at the small crack of the door.
Mrs Clamont stiffened when she saw that the man had noticed her. She turned on her feet and ran away from there, she had never seen such a thing before, but Mrs Clamont knew that if she was caught by that man it would be her who would be killed in place of Marcia Harlow.
However, in her hurry, she didn’t notice the tag that slipped and fell from her fingers.

Mrs Clamont sighed as she returned to the present from the memory of that day. She looked at the mutinous expressions of the three Ashford brothers. She said to them, “There is no need for you to look at me like that, Mister Keon. I wanted to tell the truth to the higher-ups, but Marcia cornered me before I could do that.”
“She threatened me with my son’s life… and handed me ten thousand dollars to leave the hospital and never speak of this incident.”
“And you never breathed a word about it?” Emil asked, sounding furious.

“I am an ordinary woman, Mister Emil,” Mrs Clamont said with a hint of derision in her voice. “It is easy for you to feel angry and upset with my decisions, but — stand in my shoes for a second and think. If your entire family’s life was on the line and that too for a stranger, would you save the stranger or your family?”
“I would have done what was right,” Emil shot back.
“Well, you are a hero, aren’t you? But forgive me. I am just a simple woman and a loving mother.”
