Chapter 450: Gun aimed at her head
Today was one of those days when Ari could feel the ink swallowing her until she couldn’t breathe.
She stared at her painting and the urge to set it on fire came over her. The perfect white canvas was marred with black, a woman with an unidentified face with limbs that had been cut off, with chains tying her entire body— including her throat and only the strands of her hair free and flying above was screaming in agony.
Her eyes bled. But it was not blood that dripped down her cheeks, but tar-like tears.
How it was possible for black on black to be so clear, Ari couldn’t understand. All she knew was that she could see the tears of the woman much more clearly than she could see her face.
Or maybe she didn’t want to see it.
She pulled out her phone and looked at the empty message box. Nicolai hadn’t sent any other message other than the fact that he was going to be busy today which was why he was not going to join her on the run.
Though she told him that it didn’t matter, the truth was Ai had missed him. To the point that she wanted to actually return home without finishing her morning ritual.
It was annoying how Nicolai had ended up slipping through the cracks in her armour and all of sudden after leaving his traces behind he was pulling back.
“I don’t need him,” muttered Ari as she looked at the message which she now knew all too well by her heart.
Why did he have to make her get used to him if he was not even going to stay with her all the time?
Gosh, what was wrong with her? Of course, Nicolai couldn’t stay with her all the time, he had his own life didn’t he?
Ari raised her hand and pressed it on her throbbing temples. What was going on with her? Why all of a sudden a woman of her calibre who had never relied on any man — feeling so dependent on Nicolai?
It was weird and it scared Ari. What was she supposed to do if she was to become overly dependent on Nicolai and he told her to leave?
Would she be able to withstand it?
“I want to see him,” muttered Ari. She raised to her feet and glanced at the canvas in front of her. Her eyes darkened before she turned on her feet and walked out of the room, closing the room and locking the canvas along with the surge of feelings that it brought.

Half an hour later, Ari was standing in front of the penthouse that belonged to Nicolai. She pressed her forehead against the door with a look of shock on her face, she couldn’t believe that she, who had not even chased her ex-husband — was standing in front of the door of a man.
Just because she wanted to see Nicolai, Ari had driven over to this building. It was only now that she was standing in front of the door that Ari realised how desperate she looked.
She pulled her head back and banged it on the surface of the door.
“What an idiot,” she muttered while closing her eyes.
A part of her wanted to return to the apartment and yet Ari found herself pressing the code of the penthouse before stepping inside.
She couldn’t just leave, after all, the security guard watched her go inside the penthouse. If she was to leave just after a few minutes he would sense that there was something wrong.
The last thing Ari wanted was to attract attention to herself.
And even though she said that she was only doing this to avoid unwarranted attention— Ariana knew the truth. She wanted to stay in the penthouse for it smelled like Nicolai.
Darkness greeted her as she turned around and pressed the switch on the side of the door. Bright lighting filled the room and releasing a sigh, Ari walked inside.
“I am only going to stay for a while,” Ari texted Nicolai while climbing up to the second floor. As her heart was unsettled, she might as well spend a little time in the penthouse.
Once her head was clear-headed, she would return home.
As she climbed up the stairs, a shadowy figure stepped from the small storeroom on the first floor of the penthouse.
Marcia Harlow looked at the figure that was climbing stairs and her eyes flashed with a ruthless glint. Her parched and chapped lips moved, “Ar—Ariana?”
‘Listen well, Marcia. I want you to shoot Nicolai de Luca — right in his heart, alright? It doesn’t matter if you cannot do it once. Take your time, alright?’

‘That man is only human — with you jumping at him from behind he will not have the time to fight back. As long as you empty the barrel of bullets in his body.. he is bound to die.’
“Die…” Marcia repeated with a maniacal grin on her face. “Ariana— die … die!”
At that moment her hatred towards Ariana was so intense that Marcia did not care about the consequences of her actions. This woman was the cause of her daughter’s sufferings, if she didn’t exist —if only she was gone… Ariel wouldn’t have been caught by that woman.
Marcia walked over to the stairs. While clutching the gun in her hands she started climbing one step at a time.
Ari was looking at the movie collection that Nicolai had in his room, and from the looks of it — she could see that the man was an action movie lover.
Her lips curled instinctively as reached out and pulled out a CD case.
It terrified her how a little information about Nicolai brought a smile to her lips and yet Ari didn’t want to care about the subtle pangs of terror at that moment.
Until —
She turned around and looked at the door that was closed behind her. Just now.. she heard someone walking upstairs.
