Chapter 451: Gun aimed at her head (2)
She turned around to face the door, but when Ari didn’t hear anyone move she frowned. Was she imagining things again? Given that she did wake up in a cold sweat after having nightmares and the things that she saw with open eyes —Ari wouldn’t be surprised if she started hearing things as well.
But that was until she noticed the shadow lurking in front of the door through the small gap.
Ari swallowed. For she knew that it was not Nicolai, he hadn’t replied to her message, something he never did — even when he was angry with her, he would make a point by seeing her message.
And if it was him, he would never stand outside the door and make her panic as he knew that she didn’t feel comfortable with surprises or jumpscares.
Nicolai — would never do things that would make her uncertain or uncomfortable. So who was this?
‘A trespasser?’ This was her first thought. Ari knew that this penthouse was Nicolai’s recent purchase and other than her no one knew the passcode of this penthouse.
Not even Penelope and despite the dangerous situation she was in — Ari felt smug and content over this small fact.
She walked over to the side of the large wooden cabinet and picked up the vase that was sitting on the large stool at the corner of the room.
Muttering a quick apology to Nicolai for the vase being a rather expensive antique, Ari wrapped her fingers around the vase and picked it up.
The door creaked open and the first thing that Ari saw was a gun. She inaudibly sucked in a breath as she leaned further back and waited for the figure to walk inside. Her eyes were fixated on the mirror that was right in front of the bed.
“Ar—Ari… my swee—sweet lil Ari…” Mrs Harlow croaked while holding the gun in her hands. She was smiling as she looked around the room. “Where are you —come on, come out. Look, who came to see you?”
Ari’s face turned pale. But she tried to calm herself down, suppressing the urge to follow the command that her mother had passed down. As her body instinctively moved on its own, after all, she was so used to following the command of her mother.
Mrs Harlow’s eyes, which were filled with a wild glint, moved left and right. She was holding the gun in her hands right in front of her as if she was prepared to pull the trigger at any moment.
However, when she called Ariana her voice was sweeter than cotton candy.
“Ari, I know you are there .. come out… COME OUT!” The woman raised her voice as she barked another order.
Ari clenched her fingers, her eyes darted to the door of the room which Mrs Harlow had closed. She didn’t understand how this woman came here but she knew that if she tried to run — it would be the end of her.
She could not turn her back on Mrs Harlow.
With her fingers holding the vase so tightly that they turned pale with the effort, Ari gritted her teeth and decided to take care of the gun first.
“Come on out, Ari,” Mrs Harlow called out again, she was chuckling like a mad woman as she said, “Don’t you think that you need to say sorry for what you have done? Do you even know what happened to your sister after you pulled that stunt?”
Ariana narrowed her eyes. She had thought that Ariel had escaped with Mrs Harlow but it seemed like something worse happened to that woman.
However, Ari did not care about Ariel at that moment or what happened to her. Because if she did then the one who would be in danger would be — her!
Thus, she waited and waited until Mrs Harlow had turned her body to the CD case before raising her arm and hurling the vase in her hand at the gun in Mrs Harlow’s hand.
Mrs Harlow who was not prepared for such a thing to happen, let out a yelp. The trigger of the gun was pulled, firing a bullet which embedded itself in the wall right opposite the bed.
With the impact, the gun in Mrs Harlow’s hands flew to the other side.
However, Mrs Harlow didn’t care about it as she turned and looked at Ari who stepped out of her hiding spot.
Seeing Ari, a slow smile crept on Mrs Harlow’s lips.
She said to her, “I should have realised… you were always so smart… there was no way you were going to be caught off guard.”
Ari clenched her fingers as she darted her gaze at the door of the bedroom. She could feel that Mrs Harlow’s priority was her and not the gun, thus she stepped close to the door and the woman followed, forgetting about the gun on the floor.
“What do you want?” Ariana asked when she noticed Mrs Harlow who seemed to have lost all rationality hurriedly walked towards the door as if she was afraid that Ari was going to run. “You know who I am with, are you not afraid that he would do something to you?”
Hearing her words Mrs Harlow laughed haughtily. “Hahaha. Why will I be scared of him when I have a man backing me just like how this boy is backing you? Do you really think that your threats will work on me, Ari? You already know that my connections are not as simple as you think, right?”
She did but she never knew that Mrs Harlow was backed by someone so powerful. To think that she was not even scared of Nicolai.
Who was backing her that the woman was this unbothered?
“You still have time to stop and think this though,” Ari said to the woman in a threatening voice. She looked around and finally picked up a statue of the Goddess of Justice that was placed on the window sill. “If you hurt me, you will regret it, Mrs Harlow.”
