Chapter 456: Accomplice in murder
Back in the penthouse, Ari watched Nicolai stuff Mrs Harlow’s body inside a trash bag, which was then placed inside a large carry bag.
She turned her head away, not being able to look at the sight in front of her. It was her fault that Nicolai had to grow through this trouble.
“Will everything be alright?” This was her first time killing someone, and Ari couldn’t help but worry that something might go wrong.
“Everything will be alright,” Nicolai replied just as Kayden wiped the floor clean with water first followed by a solvent that wiped the traces of blood making it impossible for it to appear under the blue light or any other tests.
Nicolai caught sight of Ari’s worried expression before saying, “Mrs Harlow was on the run, and that means that no one was in contact with her. What’s more, this penthouse is the last place she will turn up because your house is on the other side of the city. So unless someone tips the cops off, everything should be fine.”
Ari watched him close the suitcase and whispered, “What am I going to tell Aaron?”
“If we are being honest, he is the one who let this happen. If that man had been a bit more invested in his family, Mrs Harlow would have been worried about harming you as well. You don’t need to feel guilty about killing someone who wanted to see you dead,” commented Nicolai. He knew that Aaron had left his family without stopping to think about what would happen if he were to step out without caring about his mother and sisters.
Nicolai took out the antique that Ariana had used to stab Mrs Harlow with and chuckled lightly. “You really know how to choose a weapon. This woman better be thankful — she was killed by a twenty million dollar antique.”
“I am sorry— I didn’t have any choice…”
“There is no need to apologize, you would have certainly not used this antique if you had known. I would rather have you alive and well instead of worrying about an antique that can be replaced,” Nicolai sighed as he threw the antique to Kayden who caught it.
“Have it cleaned and sold — wipe the traces and records of my purchase.” If this antique fell in the hands of investigators, then he would be easily caught and while Nicolai could clear his traces — Ariana couldn’t.
“Got it,” Kayden threw the antique in the trash bag. He glanced at Ari, who was sitting at the edge of the bed with a twisted expression. “I will leave her to you, then?”
“Hmm,” Nicolai turned to look at Ariana, who was holding her face in her hands.
When Kayden saw that Nicolai had everything in control, he turned on his feet and stepped out of the room.
Once he was gone, Ari released a groan. Though the tension in her body had slowly disappeared with Nicolai returning, her thoughts and memories remained. She raised her head and asked,
“What are we going to do with her?”
“There is an old cremation house. It is used to bury bodies that are found in mass graves or the ones that remain unidentified — and many bodies are more or less stored and left unattended there unless one of the staff members remembers to burn these bodies collectively,” Nicolai said calmly. “We can sneak inside the house and stuff her body in one of the lockers. No one checks these lockers nor do they keep a record, so even if there is an additional unidentified body … I don’t think that they will care. But we need to wait for the guards to change their shift before we can do that.”
“I have used it many times,” he added when he saw Ari looking dubious.
Only then did Ari nod.
“How are you feeling?” Nicolai asked in an attempt to make a small chat.
Ari raised her head from her hands and looked at the man with a dumbfounded look on her face. “I killed the woman whom I called mother for more than twenty years, and I have no idea how I am going to face my foster brother, who had suddenly lost his mother because of his sister. On top of that, I spent six hours in this room, with her dead body. How do you think I am doing?”
Nicolai chuckled lightly, a broad smile appeared on his lips as he looked at Ari whose face was filled with disbelief with her lips curled in a scowl. He told her, “There is no need to feel upset. It gets easier with time. Look at me, I can even eat a whole chicken after pulling the guts out of a person.”
Ari rolled her eyes. Of course, he would say this, who was she even kidding? Why did she worry about his reaction, with the kind of man he was— it was surprising that he wasn’t throwing a party at her first murder or something.
She sighed and said to him, “I am sorry. I ruined your bedroom… I didn’t think…”
“Are you kidding me?” Nicolai raised a brow. He said to her, “Who do you think she came to kill? I should be thanking you for intercepting her. Or who knows, I might have ended up getting seriously injured.”
Only then did Ari pause and realise that Mrs Harlow didn’t come to this penthouse for her, she was here for Nicolai. And it was just a coincidence that she was caught in between.
If she wasn’t here, then the one who would have been attacked would have been Nicolai.
Her eyes widened as she opened her mouth, but Nicolai stopped her.
“We will talk about this later on,” he took a look at his smartwatch before saying, “Take a shut-eye in one of the guest rooms. There is something that I need to do before dealing with her body.”
Ari parted her lips, she wanted to ask what Nicolai wanted to do but after a pause, she realized that it was better to not know. Because whatever it was — it would only weigh on her conscience.
